" Students must meet the low-income requirements established by the federal government or student must represent the first generation of his/her family to potentially receive a four-year degree. Upward Bound (UB) is a free college preparatory program for high school students funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored locally by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. UB is specifically designed to strengthen the academic skills of eligible high school students to excel academically and pursue postsecondary degrees after high school graduation. $ Year-round services provided by UB include: o Academic services during the school year to strengthen academic skills and prepare student for success at the college level o A 6-week summer instructional component that is designed to simulate a collegegoing experience that includes daily coursework in English, math, reading, and science as well as other related activities such as field trips and special events o Academic advising from UB staff and individual assistance with the college admissions and financial aid application process during the academic school year In order to comply with federal regulations, all UB participants must meet the following criteria: $ Indicate an interest in attending college $ Demonstrate academic need as indicated by grades and/or test scores $ Qualify as low income and/or potential first generation college student (neither parent has received a 4-year degree); $ Commit to remain active in UB until high school graduation and complete the UB Bridge Program. Parent / Guardian Signature Student s Signature High School STUDENT/PARENT COMMITTMENT The University of Louisiana Upward Bound Program requires students to attend classes after school once a week throughout the school year. After school classes for students who reside in Lafayette Parish are on Saturday mornings from 8:00am-10:00am. In addition, students are required to attend academic classes on 10 Saturdays (10:00am- 2:00pm) throughout the year (October January). Transportation will be provided for students residing outside of Lafayette Parish. Our summer program consists of six weeks of academic classes Monday through Thursday for the entire day. Parents/guardians check in students on Sundays and pick them up on Thursdays after dinner. Attendance is mandatory. Failure to maintain an acceptable record of attendance may result in a student s dismissal from Upward Bound. Admitted students are expected to abide by program rules at all times. Program rules are outlined in our Student Handbook, which is given to all new students and is available in our office.
