Center for Educational Access Assistive Technology Lecture Capture A Basic Overview

What Is Lecture Capture? Lecture capture is a program (recording of lecture that can be downloaded via the web) that provides verbal and/or visual content from class. You will then have access to the lecture outside of class so you can listen to the lecture as many times as you want to complete your notes. This is a great study tool!!

Getting Started When a student requests notetaking as accommodation, the student will be notified from the Assistive Technology Access Specialist by e-mail to the student s NIC e-mail account. The purpose of this e-mail is for the student to check with the instructor to see if they already provide instructor notes, copy of PowerPoint presentations or lecture capture. If the instructor does have lecture notes/powerpoint available AND the student decides they will be adequate and does not need lecture capture the student doesn t need to do any more. HOWEVER, if the students instructor does not have lecture notes/powerpoint available OR if the instructor does have lecture notes/powerpoint available but upon the students review the student feels they are not adequate then the student contacts the Access Specialist to proceed with putting lecture capture in place as you have already requested. Please remember lecture capture will not be put into place unless the student replies to the e-mail sent by CEA regarding lecture capture.

Lecture Capture Timeline For Requests When the student replies back to CEA deciding that they want lecture capture, CEA has six working days to implement the lecture capture into the classroom. CEA is not responsible for student s poor academic achievement because of late requests. Requests can be made at anytime during the course of the semester.

1. When Lecture capture is implemented, the Access Specialist will contact the student via e-mail to the to the student s NIC e-mail account to schedule a meeting. 2. The student signs a contract concerning lecture capture. The student is given the web address and password to access the lectures. The student is also advised to contact CEA if the lectures are not functioning correctly or are not being recorded. 3. The Access Specialists trains the student on how access their lecture capture account.

1. If lecture capture is implemented by CEA, the lectures are downloaded into individual class files through a online video sharing Website called Screencast.com 2. Each file has a specific web address and password. For example if your class is English- 099-01 the Web address might be: http://www.screencast.com/t/nddjnthmz and the password: english099

3. This is the Screencast password login page. D

4. After you enter your password your class file will appear. The file stores lectures into a library, allowing the student to review past and present lectures. To organize your lectures you can choose from any of the options in the sort content links at the top of the library. D

5. To view your lectures click on the thumbnail. 6. The video is processed into Adobe Flash Player. If the video does not play, the computer might need to download Adobe Flash. This is a free program. D 7. To download Adobe Flash Player: Go to the internet, type the Web address: www.adobe.com and select the tab Get Adobe Flash Player. 8. Select Agree and install now. 9. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer is compatible. CEA is not responsible for computer malfunction or payment toward upgrades. D

10. After you click on the video, this is what appears on your computer screen. To play the video click on the Play Button. D

11. A menu bar will appear horizontally on the bottom of the thumbnail. You can activate the menu bar with your mouse. There are several functions on the menu bar. Play Button: When selected this button will automatically toggle to pause. Side Bar: Student can fast forward and rewind. Timer: This shows the length of of the video. When paused the timer shows the point of time where you are currently paused. Volume: Controls the volume. Full Screen: allows the viewer to the video in full screen mode. Note the resolution will decrease. D
