Learning and Teaching in Higher Education through English Do you want to prepare yourself for lecturing in higher education? Are you ready for the inter national work environment in higher education? Do you wish to develop your English language competence in an academic context? Universities want to recruit the best. Being the best in international higher education today means being able to teach your subjects in English, a language that is neither your nor your students mother tongue. This CAS has been developed in response to the growing need in academia to offer undergraduate- and postgraduate-level courses through English. It offers lecturers the unique opportunity to learn the principles of teaching in higher education together with the language through which their teaching takes place. Objectives This CAS aims to provide you with a bridge between the theory and practice of English as a medium of instruction in higher education. Based on the latest insights from research, the course aims to present you with the knowledge and tools to deal with the challenges posed by a changed communicative environment. These challenges may occur in the planning, delivery or assessment of courses. In this CAS, you will acquire a greater awareness of the role of language, culture and communication in didactics. Target Group New and experienced lecturers who wish to develop their didactic expertise and who are teaching, or may in the future teach, their subject through the medium of English.

Curriculum Structure of CAS 10 ECTS Didactic Core Modules Module 1 Introduction to Higher Education Learning Module 2 Planning and Assessing a Teaching Unit Module 3 Managing Role Expectations in Multilingual Contexts Module 4 Communicative Competence and Development CAS Completion Modules Module 5 Learning Portfolio Module 6 Study Trip 7.5 ECTS 1 ECTS 2 days 3 ECTS 5 days 1 ECTS 2 days 2.5 ECTS 4 days 2.5 ECTS 1 ECTS blended learning 1.5 ECTS 3 days Modular Structure The study programme consists of 4 didactic core modules and 2 CAS completion modules. The course is worth 10 ECTS points in total. The didactic core modules provide an overview of current theories in higher education, introduce methods of planning and evaluating teaching units, focus on role expectations in multilingual contexts and develop communicative competence. In the CAS completion modules, the participants will develop a portfolio and/or have the possibility to visit a university in the UK that has a long tradition in delivering study programmes to foreign students through the medium of English. Details on the modules can be found on our website zhaw.ch/linguistik/cas-lte

Requirements The qualifications required to lecture in an institute of higher education apply. Candidates are expected to hold or be pursuing a degree that qualifies them to teach at university level in their subject areas. Candidates with specialised professional skills or experience in relevant positions in industry may also be eligible. In these cases, admission is at the discretion of the directors of studies, who will make a decision based on an assessment of equivalence. Certificate Candidates who have completed the six modules including the above requirements will be awarded the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education through English, which is worth a total of 10 ECTS points. Candidates who have completed the four didactic core modules will receive confirmation of this didactic training, which is worth 7.5 credit points. Language of instruction All modules are taught in English. Course assessment Candidates complete 4 to 6 modules, which include preparation and consolidation tasks, teacher observation and practical language training. In addition, candidates can attend a language training course to develop their proficiency in Academic English.
