Guided Pathways Program Map NAME OF PROGRAM OF STUDY: AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY EXPECTED CERTIFICATE/DEGREE (Total Number of Units): ASSOCIATES OF APPLIED SCIENCE 60SCH PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Technology Two-Year Program provides the knowledge and skills for entry-level employment in the automotive field and related areas. Students are required to obtain a basic tool kit and OSHA-approved safety glasses. The Associate of Applied Science Degree also offers certificate options. The certificates include some of the courses in the degree plan, providing the student with alternate exit points. The Program at El Paso Community College is recognized through the National Technicians Foundation Institute for Service Excellence* (NATFE). The capstone course for the AAS Degree is 271, Shop Service and Management. Most Technology s () have a required Skills Lab. 280 Cooperative Education Automobile/ Mechanics Technology/Technician I and 281 Cooperative Education Automobile/ Mechanics Technology/Technician II which provides career-related activities encountered in the student s area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer, and student. Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Includes a 16-hour lecture component. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: The instruction, courses of study, facilities, and equipment of this institution have been evaluated by (NATFE) Standards of Quality and for the training of Technicians in the following 8 areas: Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance. The testing and certification of Technician in these areas is scheduled by ASE Institute twice per year. Job titles: Auto Technician, Automobile Technician, Service Technician, Technician, Certified ASE Master Technician (Certified Service Excellence Master Technician), Master Technician, Master Technician, Mechanic, Shop Foreman, Truck Technician MILESTONE COLOR AND SYMBOL INDEX: The Colored symbols represent milestones for embedded Certificate of Completion. These certificates provide the student with job ready skill at the certificate level for entry level positions that require less than an Associates degree. ---Two-year certificate of completion course ---One-year certificate of completion course ---Drivability of completion course Page 1 of 7
FIRST SEMESTER 107 119 217 ITSC 101 Electrical Systems Engine Repair Engine Performance Analysis I Introduction to Computers Units Descriptions, Requirements, and Milestones Presents an overview of automotive electrical systems and electrical accessories. Emphasizes electrical schematic diagrams and service manuals. Covers the fundamentals of engine operation, diagnosis and repair, overhaul and reassembly of the engine. Instructs in theory, operation, diagnosis, and repair of basic engine dynamics, ignition systems, and fuel delivery systems. Microsoft Office use See technology below Policies/structures needed to support student progression Students are recommended to pre-test with PAM before taking the TSI. This pre-test will indicate a student s preparedness for college work. Placement Testing Before students take the TSI for placement they should attend the PREP Program. The PREP Program assists students who are planning to enter college for the first time by helping them prepare to take the college placement test. Students meet with an advisor to develop a plan to improve their math, reading, and writing skills. A diagnostic assessment pinpoints specific areas of strength and weakness. Computerized modules are used for instruction. All services are free and can help students save time and money by assuring proper class placement. The better your placement test score the fewer developmental courses you will need to take. PREP also assists students in the health occupations that need to take the placement test over for ranking purposes or students who are already enrolled in the College and want to improve their placement test score results.
