Unit Design Worksheet Integrating Technology Into A Curriculum Unit Beth Shaw Grade level: 5th & 6th Grades Language Arts, Technology, and Social Studies Montana State Content Standards: http://opi.mt.gov/curriculum/index.html?gpm=1_7 Montana ISTE Technology Standards: http://eev2.liu.edu/westburyii/jg/assignments/iste_chart.htm Topic Title and Description That Fish was SO Big. The focus of this unit will be to meet the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade standards listed below. This assignment was also designed to get students excited about Tall Tales. Students will complete several activities in order to address the essential questions of the unit. Students will indentify characteristics of a Tall Tale and be able to locate examples of exaggerations in a story. Students will listen to podcasts of "Elements of Tall Tales", and "Examples of Tall Tales" before beginning this unit. Students will work collaboratively in groups to create a voice thread, then share their finished product on the Smart Board for the class to watch. Students will make a "Tall Tale" word cloud and word chain to display with their own tall tale. This unit is highly interactive by incorporating the Web 2.0 tools of Voice Thread, Animoto and Podcasts. This will teach students how Tall Tales are and were related to real world situations and real people that over time were exaggerated. Essential Questions What is a Tall Tale? After listening to several Tall Tales, can you write and illustrate a Tall Tale? Montana Content Standards: Evidence:

Standard 1 Speaking and Listening: Students know and understand the role of the communication process and demonstrate effective speaking and listening skills. Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale vocabulary Reasoning - Tall Tale definitions and comprehend meaning Performance Skills - reciting "one-liners" Products - voice recording using Audacity Standard 2 Reading: Students read by applying foundational skills and strategies to comprehend, interpret, analyze, and evaluate texts. Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale Elements Performance Skills - recording of exaggerations Standard 3 Literature: Students select, interpret, and respond to a range of literature. Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale characteristics Reasoning - Analyze different Tall Tales Students will create a Tall Tale definition note cards. Students will listen to a Podcast. Students will listen to an Animoto. Students will recite their "one-liners" with exaggerations and record as an audio using Audacity. Students will read a variety of Tall Tales. Students will listen to a variety of exaggerations in stories. Students will create an original Tall Tale using Microsoft Word.

Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale Elements Product - Audacity audio recording and Tall Tale Story in Microsoft Word and collaboration with peers. Students will actively listen to Tall Tale Podcast and listen to and watch an Animoto. Standard 5 Writing: Students will write to communicate effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences. Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale worksheet Performance Skills - recite exaggerations with expression Product - Audacity audio recording Students will write their own exaggerations. Students will complete Tall Tale worksheet. Students will compose an original story. Social Studies Standards: Standard 4: Students demonstrate an understanding of the effects of time, continuity, and change on historical perspectives and relationships. Knowledge and Comprehension - Tall Tale characteristics and history. Students' Tall Tale story will have evidence of the history and characteristics of Tall Tales.
