Jamie Lodge at the Election Count Jamie Lodge, year 12, met Kay Burley at the election count last week. Jamie is studying Goverment and Politics and attended following an invitation from the Returning Officer at RBWM to attend the count and see the process in action. Here is his account of the evening. On the evening of Thursday 8 th of June, I had the pleasure of being a guest of the Returning Officer for the Maidenhead constituency election count. I arrived at the Magnet Leisure Centre at 10pm where there were huge amounts of security, including armed police and sniffer dogs. Once our identity was checked, we were taken through to the main hall where hundreds of people were sat at tables, their first job was to sort through the votes to remove any that were invalid, then they began counting. The whole process took 5 hours, which gave me plenty of time to discuss politics with members and representatives of a multitude of parties, including the leader of the Monster Raving Looney Party and Lord Buckethead. I also got to talk with Kay Burley (Sky News presenter) and we discussed my future aspirations. At about 3am Theresa May arrived for the announcement of the winner, she won the seat with 26,500 votes more than her closest rival. Immediately after she gave her victory speech she was whisked away into the night by security and the event came to an end at about 4am. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I really enjoyed my time there despite it being a very late night, at least I didn t have school the next day! Caitlin Mcara won bronze in the final of the 200m in an incredibly close race. Luke-Lom Hynes won a bronze medal in the 800m. Olivia Phelps came 5 th in the 100m final. All students were a credit to themselves and the school, we are incredibly proud of them all and thank you for the support of all the parents who attended. Well done!
