We have had a very settled start to the year and our enrolment has increased to 296 students. I would like to welcome new staff, new students and their families along with new Kindergarten students and their families to Copacabana. Our Swimming Carnival, last Friday was a great day. I was very impressed with and proud of our students who participated on the day. Thank you to Mrs Lucas and the staff for a smooth running carnival and to parents for their support on the day. Thanks also to Mr Corcoran, Mr Fairchild and Mr Pugh for acting as lifeguards on the day. Students were placed into their classes on Monday. If you have any concerns or questions at any time, please contact the office to make an appointment at a convenient time with your child s teacher or stage co-ordinator. P & C Meeting The first P & C Meeting this year will be held on Tuesday 12 February at 7pm. We encourage parents to attend and be informed as to what is happening at our school. The new Principal from Kincumber High School, Mrs Janine Debenham, will be present at this Meeting. The P & C AGM will be held on Tuesday 12 at 7.00pm. Assembly Changes As the number of students enrolled in Copacabana has increased we are trialling (for Term 1) a few changes to how assembly is organised. This term we will have one or two combined assemblies as well as separate assemblies for K-2 and 3-6 on alternate weeks. The dates and times are listed below: Assembly Dates and Times - Term One Fri 15 February - 1.45pm (Sport Assembly Year 1 - Year 6) Fri 22 February - 1.45pm (Leadership Induction Assembly K - 6) Fri 1-2.00pm (3-6 Assembly) Fri 8-2.00pm (K - 2 Assembly) Fri 15-2.00pm (3-6 Assembly) Fri 22-2.00pm (K - 2 Assembly) Fri 5 April - 1.45pm (K - 6 Assembly) Fri 12 April - 1.45pm (K - 6 Assembly) 1H - Information Miss Holmes has been placed as a temporary teacher on class 1H. She is replacing Mrs Way who is on Long Service Leave until her retirement on 14 February. I will be making a request to DEC staffing that Miss Holmes stays as 1H s teacher for the 2013 school year. However, the DEC staffing unit may not be able to allow this request and a permanent teacher may be appointed. I will endeavour to keep Miss Holmes to allow for continuity of learning. Meet the Teacher Evening Our Meet the Teacher Evening will be held on Wednesday 20 February. On this evening an information session with your child s teacher and / or teachers of a grade / stage will be held. This is not a time for individual parent / teacher interviews, but an information session providing you with information about the teaching / learning program in your child s class. If you need an individual interview, an appointment can be made with your child s teacher by phoning the school. More information about the Meet the Teacher sessions will be sent home closer to the date. Date: Tuesday 20 February Times: KC & KB - 3.00pm K/1S, 1H, 1/2N & 2L - 3.45pm 2/3W, 3M & 4L - 4.30pm 4/5D, 5/6F & 5/6W - 5.15pm School Photographs Our school photo day is Tuesday 26 February. An information letter and envelopes to order photographs will be sent home shortly. All students need to wear full school summer uniform (NOT sports uniform) on the day. Please choose the package you require and return the envelope and payment to your child s teacher on or before photo day - Tuesday 26 February (once you have received the information note). If you would like a family photo, you can collect a special envelope from the school office after you receive the information note.

Textbook Sale Day Tuesday 19 February is our annual text book sale day. An information note was sent home on Tuesday outlining the cost and the book / books your child will receive. Textbooks are only required for Kinder to Year 4 students. Please remember to bring the envelope to school on Tuesday 19 February. CAPA Project Our very successful CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Project will be continuing again in 2013. The project aims to produce work and performances for the 5 Lands Walk. The school will cover some of the costs. However, we ask parents to assist with a payment of $20 towards the program. A project information note will be sent home soon. Student Financial Assistance Financial assistance is available for those families finding it difficult to meet costs of programs offered. Please collect an application form from the office. Your application will be considered by the Student Assistance Team. Anaphylaxis Just a reminder that our school is a nut free zone. We do have students allergic to peanuts and nut products. In an effort to eliminate the life-threatening risk posed to some students who suffer severe anaphylaxis, the school has asked that there be NO consumption of nut products at school. I also urge parents and caregivers to refrain from using any products, especially Nutella and Peanut Butter in their child s packed recess and lunch meals, either at school or on excursions. Your support is appreciated. School Calendar To assist parents in planning, a Term 1 school calendar is included in this newsletter. Additional events may be included during the term. Student Leader Assembly Students who have been elected into leadership roles will receive their badges at this special assembly Friday 22 February at 1.45pm. Parents and friends are welcome to attend this special event. Kinders 2013 Welcome to Copa Kinders 2013! Congratulations on a wonderful start to school. You have been exploring the playground with buddies and friends. It is lovely to see their smiling faces, beautiful work hanging up in their rooms and how settled they are in and out of the classroom. Photos of some of the children on their first day at school will be on display on the noticeboard near the Kinder classrooms soon. Watch out for them and come and have a look!! A special thank you to Tylah, Luka, Owen and Beau who were wonderful helpers showing our new Kinders and their parents to the classrooms. Thank you also to Jemima and Harrison our official photographers. Annette Sutton, Assistant Principal Sanitarium Weetbix Triathlon Congratulations to our students who participated for the school during their holidays. Well done - great effort!

School Attendance A continued focus for Copa is to reduce the number of students arriving late to school. Legitimate reasons for absences are understood, however, we do have students who continually arrive late to school. Students need to be at school by 8.55am. The morning session is our peak learning time and it s important for students to start the day together in class. All students should be at school each day during the school term. Parents of students who regularly arrive late will receive a letter of concern from the school and the home liaison officer will be contacted. Attendance Exemptions A reminder to parents. If you are aware that your child / children are going to be absent from school for a longer period of time - more than 5 days, an exemption from attendance is required. Please collect this certificate from the office, prior to your child s absence. Before School Procedure A teacher is on duty from 8.25am each day. If a student arrives before 8.25am they must sit in the COLA area and wait for the teacher to commence duty. From 8.25am as students arrive at school they must put their bags outside classrooms and return to the COLA/basketball court area. No students should be in classrooms or the areas outside their classrooms. Copa School Lanyards All new school and Kinder students receive a Copa school lanyard and pouch to collect their Copa Blue Awards to be traded in for positive rewards. Any student that has lost their lanyard and pouch can have it replaced at a cost of $5.00. These are available from the front office. The awards students achieve for Copa Blues is being reviewed and new procedures will be introduced shortly. Health Issues A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child s health. We welcome information from parents about your child s health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning support for your child s health and wellbeing. Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts. We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter s health needs or as otherwise required by law. C.P.S. Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all students who participated in our 2013 Swimming Carnival on Friday 1 February. The day was a big success, with students and teachers having a great time and 14 school records being broken. Ribbons, awards and the annual trophy will be presented at an assembly on Friday 15 February. A huge thank you to those parents who volunteered as our lifeguards and thank you to all the teachers and parents for supporting our first school carnival for 2013. Your encouragement and assistance is greatly appreciated! SCCPSSA Swimming Carnival The South Central Coast Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 12 th 2013 at Woy Woy Peninsula Leisure Centre. Nadine Lucas

Dogs in the Playground We ask that parents who walk their dogs to school of a morning and afternoon, please wait with them outside the school gate / fence. We have a number of students who are frightened and concerned over dogs in the playground or in their vicinity. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Also if you use the school grounds to exercise your dog on the weekends, it would be appreciated if their poo could be removed. School Security Copacabana School doesn t have too many issues with weekend vandalism, however, it does occur at times. If you see or hear anything unusual happening at school, please contact the police and / or school security 1300 880 021 (anytime of day). After School We are happy for students to play in the playground after school, however, for the students safety we are asking for your assistance. All students whose parents have not arrived after the bell should be waiting, seated around the garden in front of the hall. Students using bikes or skateboards should have helmets and safety pads as well as parent supervision. Students should only be on playground equipment with parent supervision. Remember to follow the rules of one at a time on climbing frames and ladders. We encourage all parents and students to follow these safe practices. If these requests are not met students and parents will be asked to leave the school grounds. Mrs Way is Retiring Come along and join in a special function to celebrate the career of Mrs Way and her retirement from teaching. When: Friday 15 February Venue: Copacabana Surf Club Time: 4.30 onwards Parents, students and community are Invited to drop in and say hello / farewell to Mrs Way
