MGT302 Modern Organizational Theory Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend 14-20 hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes Course Description: This course consists of a study of organizational theories and their application in addressing problems and challenges in organizational strategies, operations, and processes. The course includes environmental, organizational design and organizational change perspectives. Topics include analyzing organizational effectiveness, stakeholders, ethical issues, authority, control, hierarchies, bureaucracies, technology, change, transformation, decision making, knowledge management, innovation and conflict management. Upon completing this course students should be able to identify and explain various aspects of how organizations design their structures, strategies and operations for improving effectiveness. Course Overview: Topics include analyzing organizational effectiveness, stakeholders, ethical issues, authority, control, hierarchies, bureaucracies, technology, change, transformation, decision making, knowledge management, innovation and conflict management. Upon completing this course students should be able to identify and explain various aspects of how organizations design their structures, strategies and operations for improving effectiveness. Included in this course are discussion questions, Critical Thinking Assignments, and a final Portfolio Project. The learner should be aware of the expectations for each, and how that can affect his or her overall grade. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Describe the terms, concepts, and theories associated with organizational behavior. 2. Describe ethical considerations when applying organizational theory in a real-world context. 3. Critical Thinking: (60 points) Option #1: Organizational Bureaucracy Paper 1. Choose an organization to study. 2. Describe the degree of bureaucracy in the organization and use the six principles of bureaucracy from the textbook as your guide. 3. Identify the strengths and weaknesses within the organization based on its bureaucratic structure. 4. Describe how increased or decreased levels of bureaucracy could potentially benefit the organization. Module 4 Option #2: Case Analysis: Reorganizing the Company 1. In this assignment you will analyze the Case for Analysis: Sony s Gaigin CEO is Reorganizing the Company in the textbook. After reading the case, provide a short description of how Sony s Gaigin CEO has reorganized the company. 2. Option #2: Differences in Organizational Design: Slide Presentation Assume the role of trainer or consultant. You have been asked to prepare a presentation to a group of HR directors and managers about the differences in how organizations are designed. All are interested in moving from a functional structure to some type of divisional structure. Prepare a slide presentation in which you: Describe the types of structures (product, geographic, and market). Identify the purpose of each structure and describe the best use of the structure. Discuss the pros and cons of each structure. Describe any impact the structures may have on culture. AMPLE 4-6 slides in length, in addition to the cover and reference slides that you must include. Module 6 Critical Thinking: (65 points) Option #1: Create a Strategy Chart Create a chart in which you: Define each of the four levels of strategy. Describe the best use of each strategy. Present the pros and cons of each strategy. Identify the structures associated with each strategy. List at least one form of technology that would support strategy attainment. Your chart should be submitted as a Word document of 2-3 pages. The paper must conform to CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. In your textbook. 2. Read the situation and question presented in the assignment. 3. Assume you have been asked by a group of investors to present your findings (or answers to the questions). 4. Create a slide presentation in which you address each of the questions in the study. Be sure to specifically address the questions by assessing a minimum of four different chains or types of stores. 5. As you address the last question, also include what type of technology will best fit the recommended strategy. 8-10 slides in length, in addition to the required cover and reference slides.
