The Campus The Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) is a branch campus of Florida International University. With a student body of more than 7,000, it is the largest branch campus in Florida s State University System. Encompassing nearly 200 acres, the scenic campus offers direct access to the bay, apartment-style housing, a library, an aquatic center, a conference center and a ropes course. FIU s school of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Marine Biology, and Journalism and Mass Communication are headquartered at BBC. Our Campus offers numerous undergraduate majors and selected graduate degrees in Arts & Sciences. Mission To provide students with first-rate advanced academics and early career experiences in a university based, technology-rich environment. About MAST@FIU BBC The Marine Academy of Science and Technology at the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University (MAST@FIU BBC) is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) focused public high school that will enable students to complete up to two years of university course work at no cost. We are the only university-based public high school in Florida. The school is the result of a unique public partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Florida International University. MAST@FIU BBC is widely recognized for its innovative pedagogy and commitment to applied research and community involvement. The faculty and staff accentuate intellectual curiosity, multidisciplinary connections, critical thinking, problem-solving and global awareness. MAST students are mentored to become future leaders through a structured emphasis on integrity, the love of learning, global citizenship and excellence in all endeavors. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment The overall curriculum focus of MAST@FIU BBC is marine science, environmental science and biology. However, inherent within that viewpoint is an instructional framework that is constructed around the interdisciplinary relationship that the faculty forms using Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The curriculum, which includes Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses, is relevant, rigorous and advanced. Courses that are designated as Honors follow the curriculum prescribed by the course credit. It is awarded on the basis of academic grades and performance on an end of course examination. Courses that are designated as Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE) are eligible for college credit and are paid for by the school district. AP courses are available in all core subjects and grade levels. These courses are taught by the faculty at the MAST@ FIU BBC. AP examinations are required in every AP course and are the basis for awarding college credit in each course. Students must receive a grade of C or better to receive high school credit for an AP course. Dual Enrollment courses are available to students in grades 9-12 and are taught by the faculty at FIU. Courses are offered on a semester basis. Students hard at work in marine science class. Interdisciplinary Education Kayak adventure on nearby Biscayne Bay. All courses are interdisciplinary in nature and require extensive reading and writing. The availability of an eight period master course schedule allows students the opportunity to complete most of their required high school coursework in two years. Students are required to successfully complete prescribed research and virtual education courses during the first two years of enrollment. During this time, students are able to select a specific STEM program of study. Students in grades 11 and 12 may select from a variety of AP and DE courses that focus on each student s program of study. University-based research and internship opportunities are available to students in twelfth grade to further refine each student s career interest area.

Application Standards Incoming ninth grade students must have the following: A minimum of 2.5 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined All effort grades in core academic classes must be a 2 or higher for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined. Testimonials Frequently Asked Questions We could not be more thrilled with the opportunity that MAST@FIU BBC has given our daughter. She is driven to succeed more than she ever was before. Her teachers are exceptional and care about the students. The level and quality of education, in my opinion, is better than any other school available to my daughter, public or private. The teachers interact with the students on an individual basis and cater to each student s needs. Lisa Miller Schwartz, student s parent Last year, I enrolled my child into the magnet program MAST@FIU BBC. This school is dedicated to the STEM principles: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This school has helped my child tremendously in improving her science and mathematics skills; as well as encouraging her to explore new technological advances in the world. My daughter currently maintains a 4.0 GPA and it s all thanks to the wonderful teachers and staff that help meet her educational needs. Mrs. Faustin, student s parent MAST@FIU BBC provides an innovative combination between technology and other resources that is far superior to that of other high schools, as it also provides a college environment which better prepares you for your college career in the future.
