Total number of hours required for major, minor, or specialization 6 Total number of hours required for degree 120 Total number of hours required for major, minor, or specialization 5 Total number of hours required for 120 degree 8. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: In order to offer a comprehensive major, it is necessary to assure a well-rounded program incorporating courses in German language, conversation, composition, and grammar, alongside a good basic foundation in German literature and culture for historical as well as contemporary periods. By streamlining the curriculum to eliminate duplication in the language skills area (old major: four semesters of composition and conversation) and spreading those skills across the content courses in literature, culture, and specialized language uses (e.g. translation, business German), students can get ample practice using the language for communication purposes while at the same time acquiring a good foundation in German literature, history, and culture needed to use their degree in a variety of fields from teaching to translating and more.
