School DQ-CMR SURVEY Top T-Schools 2016 India's top tech schools ranked based on survey of colleges, students, and employers
T-SCHOOL METHODOLOGY How We Ranked the T-Schools The methodology of the Dataquest-CMR Best Tech School Survey 2016 BACKGROUND Dataquest compiled the Eleventh Dataquest-CMR survey scorecard on the best T-Schools in the country on the basis of a methodology and calculations vetted by research firm CMR. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE The aim of this survey was to determine the top Technology Schools (B.E, B.Tech or similar level graduate technical course) in the country and rank them on a list of parameters important for institutes, students and recruiters. Maximum Salary - Per Annum. Average salary - Per Annum. INFRASTRUCTURE Computer to student ratio. Percentage of students that can be accommodated in Hostel. Internet bandwidth of the institute Campus size Internet access in computer Labs. Wi fi Connectivity Presence of playground RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The Dataquest-CMR survey was done in two phases. PHASE 1 DESK RESEARCH In this phase all Tech Schools were invited to be a part of the survey. The CMR team did an exhaustive desk research. Lists of government institutes and private institutes were prepared separately. The colleges established post 2009 or not offering a B.E, B.Tech or similar level graduate technical courses were removed from the list. PHASE 2 PRIMARY RESEARCH The primary research consisted of three modules as mentioned below Module-I: Institute Survey Module-II: Student Survey Module-III: HR Survey MODULE I: INSTITUTE SURVEY The Tech Schools short-listed in Phase 1 were approached by CMR team. Both email responses and face-to-face interviews with the college representative (preferably the placement coordinator) were considered. The information collected was on four broad heads: placement, academic environment, infrastructure and industry interface. These broad parameters constituted various sub-parameters as mentioned below. PLACEMENTS Percentage of students placed Number of companies visiting campus per student. ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT Faculty / Student ratio. Percentage of permanent faculty. Percentage of permanent faculty with PhD. Batch strength of PhD course in engineering discipline Average number of research papers published by faculty in academic year 2014-15 Number of streams offered INDUSTRY INTERFACE Number of MoU signed by the Industry. Average no of industrial assignments (Research projects & consultancy projects) by faculty in academic year 2014-15 Incubation centre MODULE II: STUDENT SURVEY In this module, final year students of engineering colleges were interviewed in respective states where the institutes are located. Students were interviewed face to face to capture the feedback on all institutes located in their states / zone. Sample was mix of engineering degree of various streams. To eliminate bias, they were not asked to rate their own college where they are pursuing their degree. Students were asked to rate those institutes about which they were aware. The questionnaire comprised a list of parameters such as faculty, infrastructure, placement and all round development of students. Rating on those parameters were captured on a 10 point scale. 32 June, 2016 www.dqindia.com A CyberMedia Publication
T-SCHOOL METHODOLOGY Sample size of the students survey was 400, spread over 15 major cities of India, where participating institutes were located. MODULE III: HR SURVEY In this module, the respondent segment was HR managers of different companies who recruit students. The list of recruiters received from respective institutes was used in this survey. Apart from that, zonal level and national level organisations were also covered who do campus recruitment. Respondents were asked to rate those institutes about which they were aware. The questionnaire comprised a list of parameters such as brand image, quality of students and curriculum relevant to industry. Rating on those parameters were captured on a 10 point scale. Sample size of the HR survey was 200, spread over all four zones of India. THE RANKING The ranking of the institutes were done separately for Govt. and Private institutions. Composite score of each institute was derived by combining Institute score, Student score and HR score. Following weights were assigned to different scores. Institute Score 40 Student Score 30 HR Score 30 Institute score: It was derived by calculating weighted average of scores on following broad parameters. Placement 14 Academic Environment 10 Infrastructure 10 Industry interface 6 The weights were pre-determined by CMR based on the experience of conducting such study for last 10 years. Student Score: It was derived by calculating weighted average of scores on following parameters. Faculty 26 Infrastructure 23 Placement 31 All round development of the student 20 Weights were derived by calculating the average of importance score assigned to each parameter by students. HR Score: It was derived by calculating weighted average scores on following parameters. Brand image of the institute 25 Overall quality of students 53 Curriculum relevant to industry 22 Weights were derived by calculating the average of importance score assigned to each parameter by HR Managers. ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY All the absolute data collected under each module were normalized and converted to relative data to evaluate the relative distance among the institutes across different parameters. After normalization, the data had been multiplied with respective weights of each parameter and then the total objective score was calculated for each module. These three scores of three modules were then added up and composite score was calculated out of 100. The whole data was then arranged in descending order in Govt. and Private category. And finally we got the top institutes across India in both Govt. and Private category. VALIDATION PROCESS: CMR research team did all the data validation exercise. We had asked for a few documents from the institutes like the list of companies visited in the campus, number of students recruited by each one of them and the salary offered to the students, placement brochure, institute prospectus, companies for whom consulting / industrial assignment that has been done, name of journal where research paper has been published and an official copy of semester results. Apart from these, we had also validated the data from secondary sources like company s website. Placement data has been validated from the data provided by the various companies who generally visit campuses for placements. 36 June, 2016 www.dqindia.com A CyberMedia Publication
