Disability Services and the College Credit Plus (CC+) High School

What is Disability Services? Disability Services is the college office that approves accommodations for any student with a disability taking college-level coursework. Accommodations for college students with disabilities are approved through the lenses of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart E. Accommodations for high school students with disabilities are approved through the lenses of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Free Appropriate Education (FAPE), and The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart D.

What s the Difference? Secondary IDEA, FAPE, Rehab Act of 1973 Section 504 Subpart D Teachers and staff will help students learn, understand, and remember class materials. Teachers and staff are aware which students have an IEP/ETR, ISP, or 504 Plan Postsecondary ADA, Rehab Act of 1973 Section 504 Subpart E The student is expected to learn, understand, and remember class materials. Student must self-disclose disability to Instructor and provide a copy of their Letter of Accommodation

Who Approves CC+ Accommodations? When a CC+/ Dual Enrollment student is taking college-level coursework, and earning college credit, accommodations are approved by Columbus State Community College s Disability Services. It is important to keep in mind that college-level accommodations are not required to produce the identical result or level of achievement for handicapped and nonhandicapped persons, but must afford handicapped persons equal opportunity to obtain the same result, to gain the same benefit, or to reach the same level of achievement (The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Subpart A, 104.4.2)

Some Examples of High School Accommodations No Longer Appropriate at the College Level High School Administer test over several days Instructor repeats/ rephrases directions during class Study guides Access to notes during testing Adjusted class schedule/ shortened day Modifying tests/ homework assignments College Must complete test once started Student should ask questions when appropriate in class, or email Instructor outside of class for clarification Only if available to entire class Only if available to entire class Students registered with DS have priority registration, schedule classes appropriately Students must complete same coursework as non-disabled peers

Who Provides CC+ Accommodations? Dependent on the location of the CC+/ Dual Enrollment class. If the class is taught at the high school, the high school will provide the accommodations when/if available and appropriate. If the high school is unable to provide a specific accommodation, CSCC will provide said accommodation. If the class is taught at a CSCC campus, CSCC will provide the accommodations. Regardless of class location, the student must register with Disability Services in order to receive accommodations.

CC+ Accommodation Information Form Completed annually by high schools, which will: Help Disability Services keep a current inventory of available accommodations to College Credit Plus students at their respective high schools Help determine the most appropriate provider of specific accommodations Keep lines of communication open between Disability Services and high schools

Placement Testing Placement tests are not timed If a student requires accommodations outside of extended time, documentation and a Placement Test Accommodation Request Form will need to be submitted to Disability Services Submitting a Placement Test Accommodation Request Form does not register the student with Disability Services

Registering with Disability Services 1. Send us your documentation. By documentation we mean a copy of your IEP/ETR, 504 Plan, doctor s notes, anything that shows us what your disability is and how it will affect you in college. You can ask your Intervention Specialist to send it for you 2. Once you get an email from your Disability Services Advocate saying that you are approved for intake, fill out the Online Registration Form. The link to this form is in the email you received that states you are approved for intake. 3. Please call or email your Disability Services Advocate to schedule your intake interview. For your convenience, intake interviews can be scheduled to take place at a Columbus State Regional Learning Center near you, or at either of the Columbus State campuses (Downtown or Delaware). Please be sure to mention your location preference when contacting your Advocate.

Letter of Accommodation Students must provide Instructors with a copy of their Letter of Accommodation. This serves as proof of registration with Disability Services and outlines the student s approved accommodations.
