Before You Begin Page for SPAN 2050 Welcome to Intermediate Spanish for Business and Finance I. This page is to inform you of some key points to remember as you take this course. The Syllabus Document on the main page of this course contains contact information for me, including a phone number with voicemail, a phone number for text/sms messages, an Angel e-mail as well as an alternate e-mail should Angel encounter any problems (you should add the alternate e-mail to your contact list in your regular e-mail just in case) The Important Dates for the course are located in the Syllabus and in the Calendar in HLC Quia set up for the course. Course Structure Each module consists of different parts: Module Objectives Page This page is in each module and should be read. Grammar: a numbered list of General Grammar Objectives Communication: A General Contextually-based Communication Objective Link to Vocabulary Practice Crossword This link is to an outside website from Angel, and they contain a crossword puzzle activity to familiarize the student with the vocabulary for the chapter. This activity is strictly for practice; your access to this activity is not graded or tracked. Power Point Lectures These power points contain additional review and, sometimes, additional grammar information to assist the student in understanding the module s grammar. These are PDF Documents that correspond to the General Grammar Objectives for each Lesson. Link to ilrn Heinle Learning Center powered through Quia Books (HLC Quia) This website (http://hlc.quia.com/books) contains all graded material for this course and is password protected, including: o BasicSpanishGrammarActivities+BasicSpanishWorktext(Business&Finance) Activities o Some of these activities will have a speaking component so you will need to have a computer/tablet with a speaker and microphone or a computer with a headset to complete these assessments. o Some assignments and assessment will require Instructor Review. A final grade will appear in HLC Quia when I have reviewed and graded the work. o Lesson Tests for Lessons 1-5 (There is not a Lesson Preliminar Test) Final Exam There is a Final Comprehensive Exam that covers everything in the course (Lessons Preliminar 5). It will be available a week before the course ends. The final exam also has two attempts available. If you choose to take the final exam twice, the grade book will record the higher of the two grades. The final exam is also located within HLC Quia (http://hlc.quia.com/books) The Final Exam is a requirement for the course and must be taken; see the Syllabus Document for more information.
E-mail All enrolled students have BOTH Angel Email Account and an MCC Student E-mail account. Angel email is exclusive to Angel and can only be used within Angel. The MCC Student Email is web-based and can be used as a general personal email. Since HLC Quia needs a web-based email to contact you, you must access your MCC Student Email account to retrieve your password and username for http://hlc.quia.com/books Passwords For this course you will (may) need two username/password sets. One set is used in MCC-related items (Angel, WebAdvisor, Student Email, etc.) The other set is for HLC Quia activities. I strongly suggest that when you set up your HLC Quia account, that you use your same login information and credentials that you have for all MCC related logins. For help with your MCC login and user name go to http://www.mccneb.edu/password/ Navigating in ilrn When you log in to you Student Workstation you should see a screen that looks like this: To navigate the majority of this class you should focus on the Calendar button in the dark green sliver menu toward the top of the window. When you click on Calendar you will see a list of assignments for the dues dates listed in the Syllabus. For example, if your first due date is March 26, 2012 you will see this on the Calendar:
In essence, you will see everything that is due on the first due date (of course you will need to scroll down to see every assigned item). Since you have 3 + 1 due dates it would be a good idea to make a note of those dates listed in syllabus (3 due dates for the modules and 1 due date for the Final Exam) and then use those dates to navigate to all assigned work in ilrn. There are two resources, with assignments components for each, that you will be using as virtual "texts' this class. If you refer to the picture below this is how you should interpret the page. The opening page as you login is the virtual representation of the Basic Spanish for Business and Finance. Then to the right, the third link down is the Basic Spanish ebook. Above that are links to Business and
Finance Assignments and Grammar Assignments. On the page pictured above, if you hit the "Back" or "Next" navigation buttons in top graphic it will take you through the Business and Finance virtual Worktext. If you click on the Business & Finance Assignments button you will see a list of all the chapters. Since we are doing only chapters Preliminary through 5, if you click on a course-related chapter then you will see something like this: Even though there are 7 activities listed only 4 are assigned with due dates. You should only do the work that is assigned and accompanied with a due date. This is true for all course-related chapters. For this class the course-related chapters are Preliminar, 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5.
If you click on the Grammar Assignments link you will see this: This screen is the "virtual" Basic Spanish Grammar book. If you click on "Back" and "Next" buttons it will take you through the ebook. If you click on the Calendar and assignments you will find the assigned work for the class. As stated before, you will see all of the assignments, but you only need to do the assignments with due dates. Hopefully, this is a helpful way to begin to navigate the course; it would be a very good thing for you to explore the entire site (click on every link) in order to get your bearings. There are a lot of resources included in the course to help you, including tutoring. If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them for you or at least point you in the right direction. Parting Note Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I also have a very busy schedule, so I am not always in front of my computer. I do, however, always have access to my phone, so if you have a question please text me. I don t mind getting texts and I actually prefer that you do text me because I can usually answer you right away, sooner than later. If you don't have the ability to text, feel free to email me at (metrospanclarke@gmail.com) Obviously, I won t make a habit of answering text messages at 2:00 AM, but I do appreciate my students and I like to be available and helpful. I hope this information is helpful, and I hope you have a positive learning experience in Spanish 1050 Online. Please keep in touch, Karina
