Internships South African Shark Conservancy Our research is focused on the development of biological and ecological baselines, as well as long-term monitoring of species diversity, abundance and habitat use within Walker Bay and along the South African coast. As a SASC intern you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of research projects designed to provide early career scientist with unparalleled field and lab-based experience. Depending on the time of year you join our team, you may participate in: cetacean monitoring; elasmobranch surveys; marine debris surveys estuarine surveys baited remote underwater video (BRUV) surveys. The institute is situated meters from the sea in the Old Harbour Museum within Walker Bay, enabling them to have a fully operational salt water laboratory from which their education and research programmes are conducted. The SA Shark Conservancy has dedicated research programmes aimed at the development of biological base-lines to monitor seasonal changes in species diversity, abundance and habitat use as well as identifying anthropogenic impacts on marine habitats within Walker Bay. SASC currently runs the walker bay shark research programme, studying up to 60 species of sharks, skates and stingrays that occur in the walker bay area. ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece For over 30 years, ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, has been conducting conservation projects on all major loggerhead nesting areas in Greece. You can become a volunteer if, you are 8 years of age, you have minimum 4 weeks available (6 weeks is recommended), you can communicate in English, you are prepared for physically demanding work, you can endure basic living conditions. You will acquire fieldwork experience and enjoy interacting with volunteers from all over the world who come together to work for nature conservation. Volunteers get involved with sea turtle rehabilitation, public awareness and facilities maintenance. Basic accommodation is provided at the Centre. Volunteers cover their own travel and food costs, as well as other personal expenses and accommodation. Research opportunities are available for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Conservation and Research Volunteer Program Exciting opportunity available for students or post graduates who are looking to gain some hands on experience in the field of marine science, conservations biology and ecology. The White shark diving company is a fully licenced shark cage-diving tour operator recognised by South African Department of environmental Affairs, allowing us to undertake great shark cage diving activities and collect research monitoring data. We care greatly about the oceans and the future thereof which is why we have invested tremendous time and effort into protecting not only the great white shark, but our environment as a whole. Volunteering with White Shark Diving Co. is a unique and exciting opportunity for early-career scientist to be involved in group-breaking marine research exploring great white shark behaviour and demographics, elasmobranch diversity and abundance, fish diversity and abundance, ocean conservation and projects involving an array of other South African marine educational programmes. Field work involves controlled angling surveys from the boat and from shore, collection of behavioural, biological and morphometric data, tagging of sharks and fish using conventional spaghetti tags, snorkelling shore based transect methods, baited remote underwater video system (BRUVs) surveys and more.
