Ideas for Using to Provide Accommodations and Modifications Read Aloud Natural Reader Audacity Storyline Online A free download that will read highlighted text for students Allows the student to be in charge of what is read Has a more natural computer voice than most readers Free audio recorder that teachers can use to record a test or any other instructions Audio files can then be saved and made available to students This would take a lot of time but would allow teachers to make recordings specific to their instructional needs Has a variety of storybooks that will read aloud with pictures on the computer Cannot be saved to any device www.naturalreaders.com http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ www.**storylineonline**.net/ Bookshare A free site (for EC) for textbooks, AR books and pleasure reading books, both fiction and fiction books. Downloads Read Out Loud for the reading part of the sight. Classmate reader (AT dept and VI dept has these www.bookshare.org

Tri-Care (Hearing Impaired Students) for loan) is a portable reader with screen (enlarges font to 22 point) reads books, podcasts, and music that has been downloaded from BookShare or other e-text source This site provides auditory feedback devices, interpreter services, multi-functional machines, real-time captioning service, signaling devices, assistive listening devices http://cap.tricare.mil/solutions/ Index.aspx. Autism Support Family Village For Children with Autism: This site provides: Low- at Low Cost-dry erase boards, photographs, Mid--Simple electronic device High--Complex at high cost www.familyvillage.wisc.edu/edu cation/at.html Vocabulary Angry Bird Angry Birds can be used in so many different ways to teach students new vocabulary, the use of coherent language, basic question/answering skills and even story telling skills. You will just need to adjust the level of scaffolding needed to get into the skills you are trying to get into Quizlet Teachers create an account and then they create a set of flash cards based on vocabulary. The

great thing about this website is that it will read aloud the words on the website. You can also pull this up on the ipad and you click the speaker beside the word just as you would on computer and it will read it aloud. This enables student to study the words with the assistance they need to actually learn the word. There are also free flash card apps that will link to Quizlet and you can download the actual set onto the ipad/itouch. However since you can go to the website on the ipad/itouch you really don't have to have an app. Math Calculator Free download calculator! You can make the box bigger on the screen and it will automatically open it that way every time. BEST THING is that at the end of the session you can print out the work. Great for independent work on the computer with a paper print. Students can use keyboard, mouse, adapted mouse, and adapted Motor Control Need: - Dragon Naturally Speaking keyboards. To provide students with motor control difficulties an effective way to complete writing assignment These programs are great but they each require http://www.moffsoft.com/freec alc.htm

Microsoft Office Voice Recognition the student to have a speech profile, this means the students can't just use any computer to do the work. Though all the PC's in a lab will have office, the computer the student uses will have to have their specific voice profile for it to work The ipad has a headphone jack. On the ipad1 it is on the top right. You can also use the inline mic/headphone combo to use as a moew direct microphone along with the headphone. See link to this page: http://www.macworld.com/article/158568/2011 /03/ipad_2_accessories_compatibility.html The county has 3 licenses for this product which is a high-end voice recognition software. Dragon allows students to dictate assignments Dragon can listen to the student voice allowing a profile to be created which improves computer accuracy over time Office provides a free voice recognition tool The user creates a profile and then "trains" their voice so that office can improve its accuracy Ipad ios5 The new ipads support voice dictation

Pen Scanners Pen scanners have been around for a number of years now, however, the current technology has had a positive impact on the accuracy of the pen scanners and they have improved tremendously. The pen scanner is used the same way you use a marker highlighter. Simply take the pen scanner across the text. The pen scanner will let you scan, store and transfer your printed text as well as smaller images to your computer. It's ideal for taking notes or scanning text for students that use a text reader. Many of the newer pen scanners also have synthetic voice and read the scanned text. Many teachers claim that the use of the scanner pens aids children with dyslexia. Fine motor control is essential Responsibility (the student will need to keep the pen with him/her) Auditory discretion is important as many of the pens read but the voice is synthetic which can be frustrating for many students Confidence, these students need to be comfortable using their assistive devices around their peers The scanner pen is relatively easy to use

Word Q It is much faster than copying or typing The text can be quickly transferred to a computer for editing or auditory use. Currently the pen will reads fonts from 6 to 22 points in size The pen recognizes over 50 languages Most pens read at a 1000 characters per second Reads wavy and distorted characters as in cursive writing Reads text, numbers, and bar codes Word Q is a software application that will work with email, word processors, the web etc. When Word Q is turned on, you begin to type a word and it will predict what it is you're trying to type. Word Q will also read it back for you. Word Q will work on any Windows software and is currently available in English and French. Word Q in my opinion, (which is based on the students that I've seen use it on a regular basis) is truly one of the most superior software application that will motivate dyslexic students to write and promote their self-confidence at the same time.

Visual Impairment (Access to standard computers) Mac Computers There is a universal access feature with Mac computers that allows the user to zoom any part of the screen they wish PCs For minor adjustments you can change the display properties on the monitor so text and icons will appear larger In most internet browsers you can change the property settings so basic text is larger Zoom-text Screen enlargement program/ Magic Screen enlargement program Allows screen enlargement for all programs Has a screen reader, however it does not work well for internet pages CCS has site licensures for both of these programs (contact a member of the vision program)
