CercleS in brief founded in Strasbourg in 1991 confederation of independent associations from 24 countries in Europe brings together some 300 Language Centres, Departments, Institutes, Faculties or Schools in Higher Education whose main responsibility is the teaching of language represented by 11 full members (national associations) and 15 associate members

CercleS in brief Its members have several thousand academic, administrative and technical staff, and some 250,000 students who learn all the world's main languages. CercleS is committed to the highest possible standards in language education and research.

CercleS Aims and Activities Aims To support language centres in European establishments of higher education, for the provision of language training backed up by appropriate technological and pedagogical resources. To promote research in foreign language learning at international level. To encourage international and interdisciplinary cooperation between language centres in order to enable them to co-ordinate the pursuit of their objectives.

CercleS Aims and Activities Activities In order to achieve its aims CercleS organises conferences, distributes a regular printed Bulletin to all its members, runs electronic bulletin boards and publishes its conference proceedings. CercleS also facilitates: staff training staff exchanges between centres research into language teaching and learning observatories on technological developments scholarly publication

CercleS Boards The organisation of CercleS is based on three pillars: the General Meeting, the Co-ordinating Committee and the Executive Committee

The General Meeting meets at least every second year determines the overall policy of the Association ratifies the election of the President approves standing orders and the reports of the President, Secretary General and the Treasurer determines the strategy by which CercleS shall develop its plans for action

The Co-ordinating Committee is responsible for general management of the affairs of CercleS directs the actions of the Executive Committee and supervises the latter s administrative activities agrees the accounts and annual budget draws up proposals for standing orders, or amendments to the same, for submission to the General Meeting

The Executive Committee comprises its President, the Secretary General, the Treasurer and their respective deputies is elected every two years by the Co-ordinating Committee manages the day-to-day running of the organisation represents the organisation with respect to other associations
