Little Shop of Physics Summary 2006-2009 Summary Since 1992, the Little Shop of Physics has presented school programs to over 250,000 K-12 students around the state and region. We ve visited twelve different states and six different countries, and we ve been profiled in publications ranging from Edutopia to People. In 1995, the Little Shop of Physics was one of 10 projects nationwide to receive funding from the American Physical Society as part of the World Year of Physics. This recognized the Little Shop s national reputation as an exemplary science outreach program. Since that time, we ve expanded the scope of our activities considerably with the award of a large grant through CMMAP, the Center for Multiscale Modeling of Atmospheric Processes. LSOP By the Numbers LSOP is: 1 director (salary from University) 3 professional staff (salaries grant funded) 5-6 undergraduate interns (salaries grant funded) 150+ volunteers (who work for a t-shirt and a free lunch) Each year we: Present a hands-on science experience to 20,000+ students Host 5,000+ visitors to our yearly Open House Present workshops (1 hour to 1 week) to 200+ K-12 teachers Make 3 extended road trips to Native American reservation areas Employ 5-6 undergraduate interns Present 1-2 papers or posters at professional meetings Host international visitors Present a one-week lab experience to 2000+ Physics lab students at no cost to CSU. Make presentations at CSU events such as RamWelcome, the President s Picnic and Fall Address, evening programs at dorms, etc. Most of our money comes from outside: Nearly all of our funding comes from the CMMAP grant through Atmospheric Science. In 2007-2008, the total grant amount was $175,000. In 2008-2009, this amount increased to over $200,000 with the addition of another professional staff member. We also receive small grants from other sources, donations from school groups, and donations of equipment and time from individuals. CSU support is limited to cost share on the CMMAP grant and the salary of the Director. Where we go, what we do: Each year s tour has a different theme, and a different range of schools visited. The details of the past three years are on the following pages.
