SAMAGRA S HIKSHA Quarterly Newsletter of BRCM Education Society Volume XI April June, 2015 Chairman's Message H.K. Chaudhary Chairman BRCM Education Society I am elated to learn that BRCM Education Society is bringing out XI Edition of 'Samagra Shiksha', a quarterly magazine, in July, 2015. On a cursory glance of the previous issues of the 'Samagra Shiksha', I have observed that it is highly informative and educative in nature. The Advisory & Editorial Boards take special care to ensure that 'Samagra Shiksha' does not remain a platform to highlight the achievements and important events of the sister institutions, as most internal publications do; it lays emphasis to reflect important national and global events, inspiring & thought provoking articles and motivating life & achievements of eminent personalities, which will be of immense value to the students and observers of Indian history and freedom movement. I am extremely happy to know that BRCM Education Society & Gram Panchayat, Bahal have st st jointly organized and celebrated 1 International Yoga Day at Bahal on 21 June, 2015. I also extend my heartiest congratulations to all students of BRCM Public Schools, Vidyagram & Gyankunj, who topped and succeeded in CBSE Exams for the session 2014-15 with flying colours. I wish all the members of BRCM family every success in their noble venture. 1st International Yoga Day Celebration at Rajiv Gandhi Khel Stadium, Bahal BRCM Education Society and Gram Panchayat, Bahal jointly organized the 1st International Yoga Day on 21st June, 2015 in a big way. Local people, youth and children of Bahal & surrounding areas along with the staff of BRCM Group of Institutions actively took part in the celebration. Shri J.P. Dalal, Senior BJP Leader, Loharu was the chief guest of the function which was widely reported in the media as one of the well-organised and well attended function in Bhiwani District. Bharat Ratna Madan Mohan Malviya Born on December 25, 1861 at Allahabad, Madan Mohan Malviya was catapulted into the political arena immediately after his first moving speech at the second Congress session held in Kolkata in 1886. It speaks volumes about his leadership and organizational capabilities and oratorical skills that he became the president of Indian National Congress four times in 1909, 1918, 1930 and 1932. Malviya Ji is remembered for his stellar role in the Independence movement. His main achievement was establishment of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in the year 1916. He had his schooling at Allahabad District School. Later in his life, he was destined to start his teaching career from this very school in 1884. During his school days itself several poems written by him were published in journals and magazines. He matriculated in 1879 from Allahabad University, completed his B.A. degree from Calcutta University and later did his M.A. in Sanskrit. He left his teaching job to join as an editor of a nationalist weekly. He left that too and pursued Law Degree. After completion of law degree, he began his practice at the Allahabad District Court in the year 1891 and then in the High Court in December, 1893. He appeared in the court for saving 177 freedom fighters in the Chouri-choura case. He had started the Scouting inspired organization known as the Seva Samithi. He met with Annie Besant in 1911 and determined to work on a common Hindu University at Banaras. He joined the group of Lala Lajpat Rai, Jawaharlal Nehru and many others in order to protest against the Simon Commission in 1928. He had popularized the 'Satyameva Jayate' (Truth alone will triumph) slogan. He became the Chairman of Hindustan Times from 1924 to 1946. Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya remained Imperial Legislative Council's member from 1912 to 1926 (in 1919 it was transformed into the Central Legislative Assembly). He worked in society on many important fields and he tried to eradicate the caste barrier in temples and other social barriers. Because of his social works for Dalit areas, he was even expelled by the Shri Gaud Brahmin Sabha. He had organized the entry of Hindu Dalits in the Kalaram Temple on the Rath Yatra day and took a dip in the Godavari River by chanting the Hindu mantras. A great freedom fighter, educationist and social reformer, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya was nominated to get highest civilian award of India, the 'Bharat Ratna' in month Dec. 2014. Indian President, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee conferred the BHARAT RATNA on Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya th posthumously on 30 March 2015. Mrs. Saraswati Malviya, grand-daughter-in-law of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and other family members receiving the honour from President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. 2 SAMAGRA S HIKSHA

SAP HANA- In-Memory Database Technology Dr. Kamal, Assistant Professor Department of Computer Science & Engineering, BRCM CET, Bahal SAP HANA is the latest in-memory analytics product from SAP; using HANA companies can do adhoc analysis of large volumes of data in real-time. SAP HANA (high-performance analytic appliance) is an application that uses inmemory database technology, which allows the processing of massive amounts of real-time data in a short time. The in-memory computing engine allows HANA to process data stored in RAM as opposed to reading it from a disk. This allows the application to provide instantaneous results from customer transactions and data analyses. Using HANA, companies can analyze their data as soon as it is available. HANA is fast due to many reasons. The traditional databases store the relational table one row after another, IMCE stores tables in columns. The following figuredepicts a very simplified version of what s inside the In-memory Computing Engine. As SAP HANA supports both SQL and OLAP reporting tools, there are separate SQL and OLAP engines to perform operations respectively. There is a separate calculation engine to do the calculations. There is a planning used for financial and sales reporting. Above all sits something like a controller which breaks the incoming request into multiple pieces and sends sub queries to these engines which are best at what they do. There are separate row and column engines to process the operations between tables stored in rows and tables stored in column format. The SAP HANA Database was developed primarily in JAVA and C++, designed to run on the SUSE Linux Operating System. The figure below provides a high-level view of the SAP HANA Application Software and its associative functions: In-Memory Computing Engine Column Storage Multiple Engines Compression Partitioning Figure: inside the In-memory Computing Engine. 1. Compression: As the data written next to each other is of same type, there is no need to write the same values again and again. There are many compression algorithms in HANA with the default being the dictionary algorithm, which for example maps long strings to integers. 2. Example of dictionary algorithm: You have a Country column in your Customer table in your database. Let s say you have 10 million customers from 100 countries. In the standard row-based storage you will need 10 million string values stored in memory. With the dictionary compression, the 100 country values will be assigned an integer based index and now you need only 10 million integers + the 100 string values + the mapping of these values. This is a lot of compression in terms of bytes stored in memory. There are more advanced compression algorithms (RTE etc) which would even reduce the 10 million integer storage. 3. Now imagine a scenario with 100 tables and a few thousand columns. You get the picture. Less data is exponentially proportional to fast processing. The official tests show a compression of 5-10x, that is a table which used to take 10GB of space would now need only 1-2GB of storage space. 4. Partitioning: SAP HANA supports two types of partitioning. A single column can be partitioned to many HANA servers and different columns of a table can be partitioned in different HANA servers. Columnar storage easily enables this partitioning. 5. Data stripping: There are often times when querying a table, a lot of columns are not used. For example, when you just want the revenue information from a Sales table which stores a lot of other information as well. The columnar storage enables that the unnecessary data is not read or processed. As the tables are stored in vertical fashion, there is no time wasted trying to read only the relevant information from a lot of unnecessary data. 6. Parallel Processing: It is always performance critical to make full use of the resources available. With the current boost in the number of CPUs, the more work they can do in parallel, the better the performance. The columnar storage enables parallel processing as different CPUs can take one column each and do the required operations (aggregations etc) in parallel. Or multiple CPUs can take a partitioned column and work in parallel for faster output. Multiple Engines SAP HANA has multiple engines inside its computing engine for better performance. 8 SAMAGRA S HIKSHA Data Stripping Parallel Processing Calculation No Pre-Aggregation => Ad hoc queries SQL OLAP/MDX Figure: high-level view of the SAP HANA Key architecture components include: Client Applications SAP HANA can accommodate multiple clients across multiple instances to provide access to useful data across a number of related applications. SAP HANA can also connect via an optional module (XS Engine) to a Client Application via HTTP/S. This is helpful for obtaining third-party data or data from disparate locations. It is currently not recommended to attach more than one ERP per instance of SAP HANA due to potential for table name replication (SAP HANA Database is a nonlocking database). Index Server The Index Server contains the actual data and engines to process the data. Pre-Processor Server The Index Server utilizes the Pre-Processor Server to analyze text data and extract data from text when called via the Search function. Statistical Server The Statistical Server will analyze and present status, performance and metrics from all SAP HANA Database components listed here, as well as the underlying hardware and OS. Name Server - The Topology of the SAP HANA Database is recorded here. In a multi-server SAP HANA distributed landscape, the Name Server will record which data is on which server to decrease time associated with re-indexing. XS Engine Client applications can use HTTP to transmit data via the optional XS Engine which uses SAP ICM for HTTP server. This module provides access to the SAP HANA DB by transforming the persistence model stored in the DB into a consumption model for clients exposed via HTTP. This allows an organization to host system services that are part of the SAP HANA Database (ex. Search service, built-in web server that provides access to static content in the REPOSITORY) Conclusion The SAP HANA real-time business platform helps companies work smarter at almost every decision point. They can process all their data both historical and fresh operational with the speed needed to support real-time business processes. The SAP HANA real-time business platform is transforming the way businesses store, manage, and use their data. IT organizations no longer need to deploy and maintain separate databases for their transactional and analytical applications. Instead, they can support all their applications on a single database and perform complex queries in fractions of a second to inject data-driven insights into real-time processes.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak Father of Indian National Movement Bal Gangadhar Tilak is considered as Father of Indian National Movement. Rightly, the British colonial authorities called him "Father of the Indian Unrest." He was a multi-faceted personally a social reformer, freedom fighter and a scholar of Indian history, Sanskrit, Hinduism and Mathematics. Tilak was born on July 23, 1856 in a middle class family in Ratnagiri, a small coastal town in south-western Maharashtra. He was a brilliant student, especially very good in mathematics. In 1876 he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Arts in Mathematics, securing first division from Deccan College, Poona. He obtained his LL.B. degree from University of Bombay in 1879. He spurned lucrative offers of government service that came his way after completion of his degree. Instead he decided to devote himself to the larger cause of national awakening. Tilak founded the Deccan Education Society with the help of some of his college friends. His goal was to improve the quality of education for Indian youth, as he was a critic of the educational system, the British had provided for the Indians. The society established the New English School for Secondary Education and Fergusson College in 1885 for postsecondary studies. A year after founding the Deccan Education Society he started two weeklies, 'Kesari', a Marathi weekly and 'Mahratta', an English weekly. Soon both the weeklies became very popular. The newspapers actively propagated the cause of freedom. To instill a sense of unity, Tilak started celebrating festivals like 'Ganesh Chaturthi' and Shivaji Jayanti'. Now Ganesh Chaturthi is considered one of the prime festivals of the Marathis. He was one of the first and strongest advocates of "Swaraj" (self-rule). He is known for his quote in Marathi, "Lojkt gk ek>k tuefl¼ gdd vkgs vkf.k rks eh feyo.kkjp; "Swarajya is my birthright, and I shall have it! Tilak's activities aroused the Indian populace, but they soon brought him into conflict with the British government, which prosecuted him for sedition and sent him to jail in 1897. The trial and sentence earned him the title Lokamanya ( Beloved Leader of the People ). He was released after 18 months. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was arrested again on the charges of sedition and inciting terrorism in 1906. He was sentenced and deported to Mandalay in Burma (now Myammar) to serve a six-year prison sentence. He wrote his famous book 'Srimad Bhagavadgita Rahasya' ( Secret of the Bhagavadgita ) while serving the prison term. Tilak was released on June 8, 1914. There was unprecedented jubilation in India after he was set free and people organized grand welcome to receive him back in India. This boosted his morale and he decided to re-unite with his fellow nationalists and founded the 'Home Rule League' in 1916 to attain the goal of Swaraj. He went from village to village and explained the aim of his League to the people. Soon he won their hearts. Unfortunately, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak died on August 1, 1920 while he was still engaged in the struggle for Swaraj. He was a member of the Municipal Council of Poona (now Pune) and a Member of the then Bombay Legislature. SAMAGRA S HIKSHA 21
