This session will provide insight into challenges, successes, and potential for collaboration/partnership between Virginia State University and the VCCS. Session Goals: The main goal of this session is to describe the challenges, successes and the great promise that this program holds for community college students with an aptitude for mathematics and/or interest in teaching. Faculty members wondered what other options there were, and switched to Hawkes starting in the fall of 2015. Come hear what they learned, and discover if Hawkes could be right for your school. this transition, and what faculty members liked and didn t like about both products. In this session she will share practical projects for Pre-calculus and Calculus. To gain insight into attitudes about and use of OER, a panel of three math faculty will share their experiences and answer questions about OER. Session Goals: Adopting Open Educational Resources can be at once frustrating and rewarding. hope interested faculty will leave informed about best-practices and resources around adopting OER. In a 60-minute question and answer panel, three speakers will each summarize their experiences teaching with OER and allow the audience to ask questions. Additionally, locating quality OER materials will be discussed. Are there elements in any course description that might need change? We will brainstorm together to gather changes to propose to our peers and the ultimately to the VCCS. Session Goals: The goal is to gather some suggestions for changes to the math course descriptions, by starting the conversation with our math peer group. From there, the suggestions would need to be sent out to math departments for further discussion and recommendation, and then sent on the VCCS for consideration. Session Four 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Merritt Hall 5208 The Gini Index: Using Integrals to Measure Income Inequality in an Applied Calculus Course Zachary Beamer, Instructor of Mathematics Piedmont Virginia The Gini Index incorporates calculus and statistics concepts to measure levels of income inequality. This session explores the mathematics behind how the index measures inequality, at a level accessible to students with a basic understanding of integration. advanced mathematics can contribute to discussions of social justice. Session Goals: This session presents a real-world application suitable for students in an applied calculus course. Starting with U.S. household income data, this discussion walks through the process of developing an index that measures how equally resources are distributed. This process starts with using basic deive statistics techniques and ultimately shows how the data can be analyzed using area between curves. As the Gini Index is frequently applied in economics and political science, this topic emphasizes the value of advanced mathematics in interdisciplinary studies. By considering the index, students interested in the social sciences can engage in meaningful mathematical inquiry. Attendees will learn how to find, edit, and create questions for assessments as well as explore other advanced features in MOM. Attending the introductory workshop is recommended. Session Five 10:10 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Merritt Hall 5208 Intermediate Graphing a Quadratic Equation in Two Variables Which Has an XY Term, but NOT by Using an Implicit Function Grapher or Rotation of Axes Thomas Garrett, Associate Professor Tidewater Portsmouth This session will explain how to draw the graph of a conic section using a common graphing calculator when the graph has an axis of symmetry which is not parallel to one of the coordinate axes (i.e., the equation has an xy term). Session Goals: Have you ever wanted to show your students, when teaching the conic sections, that some quadratic equations in two variables have an xy term, and the graph of that equation has an axis of symmetry that is NOT parallel to a coordinate axis, but you gave up that goal since you did not think it right to use an implicit function grapher? Achieving that goal with an ordinary graphing calculator is something you can do after this session. Chancellor s Award for Teaching Excellence This highly competitive award is awarded annually to one outstanding educator in the VCCS. Chancellor s Commonwealth Professorship Program The Chancellor s Commonwealth Professorship is awarded annually to up to three outstanding community college educators for release time and expenses for a teaching/learning project conducted for up to two academic years. Chancellor s Faculty Fellowship Program The Chancellor s Faculty Fellowship is awarded annually to up to three outstanding VCCS community college educators for full-time residential doctoral study. Classified Staff Leadership Academy The Classified Staff Leadership Academy provides a short-term, intensive program of professional and personal development focusing on skill development, leadership study, and personal growth. Faculty & Administrators Leadership Academy This leadership academy is designed to provide the theories, practices, and skills needed to support current and aspiring leaders to lead their respective departments/areas and colleges more effectively. Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community College Inquiry is a refereed journal that encourages writing from community college personnel. The journal is published once a year by the Virginia Community College System. The journal features papers on subjects related to community college teaching and learning. Faculty International Exchange Program VCCS International Exchange is an annual program of short-term reciprocal professional development exchanges between the VCCS and workplace partners from the Netherlands. New Horizons Conference This annual conference is the VCCS premier teaching and learning event, offering over 900 faculty, administrators and staff an opportunity to explore new technologies and discover innovative ways of enhancing their ability to provide students with an education that will help propel each of them to a future of success. Paul Lee Professional Development Grant and Workshop Mini-Grant Awards Grants for reassigned time and monetary awards are available for creative, innovative projects and research in discipline, instructional, career, and organizational development. Workshop mini-grants provide funding for professional development activities such as workshops and conferences involving at least two VCCS colleges. Peer Group Conferences Peer group conferences encourage intra/interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, planning, forecasting, learning, and networking in the VCCS. Each peer group will have the opportunity to meet every other year to discuss substantive issues related to curriculum revision, integration of technology, instructional innovations, and discipline updates. Peer group meetings are organized by a planning committee comprised of individuals in the discipline or peer group. Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence (RCTE) Increase the quality of your students learning by teaching enthusiastically with the latest discipline knowledge, instructional practices, and technological advances. Learn what other teachers, both within and outside of your discipline, are doing across your college and the VCCS.
