The Virginia Space Grant Consortium offer a variety of scholarship and internship programs, designed to motivate community college STEM students to finish their degrees and to pursue NASA-related fields and careers. Have them dream big; the sky is not the limit. Session Goals: To present opportunities offered by NASA Education and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium specifically for STEM faculty and students at VCCS member institutions. Participants will need an instructor MyOpenMath account to fully participate. They can request one at www.myopenmath.com. It is recommended to request one at a week in advance. Session Goals: The workshop is part of a CIF grant for two MyOpenMath workshops, one introductory level and one advance. Session Two 3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. Merritt Hall 5206 CVUMSP: Preparing the Next Generation of Math Teachers Camisha Parker, Assistant Dean Woodbridge Kenneth Williams, Associate Professor of Mathematics John Tyler Midlothian The NSF-funded Central Virginia Undergraduate Mathematics Scholarship Program (CVUMSP) identifies, recruits, and prepares undergraduate students to become secondary mathematics educators in high- needs school districts, providing them with internship and scholarship opportunities. This session will provide insight into challenges, successes, and potential for collaboration/partnership between Virginia State University and the VCCS. Session Goals: The main goal of this session is to describe the challenges, successes and the great promise that this program holds for community college students with an aptitude for mathematics and/or interest in teaching. Session Two 3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. Merritt Hall 5207 Beginner VCCS Math Pathways Projects Updates, Insight, and Discussion Patricia Parker, Developmental Math Chair Germanna Fredericksburg The VCCS Math Pathways projects involve both credit and developmental level math courses and provide new opportunities for all colleges. This session will update you on the Math Pathways projects as a whole and entertain some discussions on the project in general. Session Goals: Update the math community on the status of the Math Pathway Projects. Session Two 3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. Merritt Hall 5208 Developmental Math: Switching from Pearson to Hawkes Ellen Oliver, Math Instructor & Developmental Math Coordinator New River Sara Tyler, Educational Courseware Representative Hawkes Learning Systems New River Community College had used Pearson s MyLabsPlus (Trigsted) since the fall of 2012 for developmental math classes. Faculty members wondered what other options there were, and switched to Hawkes starting in the fall of 2015. Come hear what they learned, and discover if Hawkes could be right for your school. Session Goals: The presenter will share what NRCC has experienced with MATH Peer Group Conference AGENDA for FRIDAY, February 19, 2016 4

this transition, and what faculty members liked and didn t like about both products. The presenters will provide statistics of their success rates for Fall 2015 for both groups of students (those using Pearson and those using Hawkes), and also share preliminary results for Spring 2016. They will answer any questions participants have about the transition and about the switch. Session Two 3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. Merritt Hall 5209 Intermediate MTH 163/4 & MTH 173/4 Projects for Everyday Life Mariko Shimizu, Associate Professor of Mathematics Thomas Nelson Hampton As an attendee at the AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges) conference last November, the presenter observed that many professors are creating new projects on real applications for everyday life, and obtained plentiful resources. In this session she will share practical projects for Pre-calculus and Calculus. Session Goals: To share information and ideas from the AMATYC conference with colleagues in Virginia so that each professor may implement new projects in the course or in the classroom, in an effort to help students understand the meaning and purpose of concepts in Precalculus and Calculus through projects with real applications. 4:20 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Break Session Three 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Merritt Hall 5206 Faculty Experiences Using OER: From Frustration to Freedom Alyson Day, Content Specialist Germanna Fredericksburg Jason Lachniet, Mathematics Faculty Wytheville Robert Parker, Assistant Professor, Mathematics Rappahannock Warsaw Libby Watts, Mathematics Instructor Tidewater Norfolk Adoption of Open Educational Resources has been increasing over the last ten years, and to a remarkable degree in Virginia s Community Colleges. To gain insight into attitudes about and use of OER, a panel of three math faculty will share their experiences and answer questions about OER. Session Goals: Adopting Open Educational Resources can be at once frustrating and rewarding. hope interested faculty will leave informed about best-practices and resources around adopting OER. In a 60-minute question and answer panel, three speakers will each summarize their experiences teaching with OER and allow the audience to ask questions. The panel will discuss reasons for adopting OER, challenges they have faced, how they have used technology to deliver OER, and support that they have both received and wish they had received. Additionally, locating quality OER materials will be discussed. Session Three 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Merritt Hall 5207 Beginner VCCS Math Pathways Projects Discussion on Math Pathways Patricia Parker, Developmental Math Chair Germanna Fredericksburg This session will focus on the specifics of the developing math pathways and gather your feedback and questions regarding the work completed by the Math Pathways work group. Project Goals: Develop structured math pathways to promote successful student selection, completion, and transfer. Session Goals: To update the math community and gather feedback on current projects. Session Three 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Merritt Hall 5208 Automotive Mathematics as Pathway to Student Success Trina Campbell, Developmental Math Adjunct Instructor Germanna Fredericksburg Attendees will learn how GCC brings a contextualized, career-based math class to our automotive certificate program. Information includes the logistics, collaboration, curriculum development, first semester results, and second semester revisions. Session Goals: To share the process of building an alternative to the MTEs. Session Three 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Merritt Hall 5219 (Computer Lab) StatCrunch in Introductory Statistics Kathleen Yan, Instructor Alexandria The presenter will introduce various data analysis tools in StatCrunch based on a semester-long term project assigned in introductory statistics. She will also demonstrate how to implement some build-in simulations in MATH Peer Group Conference AGENDA for FRIDAY, February 19, 2016 6

StatCrunch that can be used in classrooms. The audience will have an opportunity to explore StatCrunch themselves. AGENDA Saturday, February 20, 2016 Session Four 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Merritt Hall 5206 Proposing Changes to VCCS Course Descriptions for Mathematics Courses Diana Branton, Mathematics Instructor Tidewater Virginia Beach Laura MacIntyre, Math faculty Tidewater Virginia Beach Have you had the experience of students asking you about the VCCS Course Description, such as for MTH 163? Are there elements in any course description that might need change? We will brainstorm together to gather changes to propose to our peers and the ultimately to the VCCS. Session Goals: The goal is to gather some suggestions for changes to the math course descriptions, by starting the conversation with our math peer group. From there, the suggestions would need to be sent out to math departments for further discussion and recommendation, and then sent on the VCCS for consideration. Session Four 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Merritt Hall 5207 Beginner VCCS Math Pathways Projects Discussion on Co-Enrollment Mathematics Patricia Parker, Developmental Math Chair Germanna Fredericksburg This session will focus on the specifics of the developing co-requisite models and gather your feedback and questions on the work group's progress. Project Goals: Build a model that creates a co-enrollment option of credit math with a support course or lab to meet developmental prerequisites. Session Goals: To update the math community and gather feedback on current projects. Session Four 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Merritt Hall 5208 The Gini Index: Using Integrals to Measure Income Inequality in an Applied Calculus Course Zachary Beamer, Instructor of Mathematics Piedmont Virginia The Gini Index incorporates calculus and statistics concepts to measure levels of income inequality. This session explores the mathematics behind how the index measures inequality, at a level accessible to students with a basic understanding of integration. advanced mathematics can contribute to discussions of social justice. Session Goals: This session presents a real-world application suitable for students in an applied calculus course. Starting with U.S. household income data, this discussion walks through the process of developing an index that measures how equally resources are distributed. This process starts with using basic deive statistics techniques and ultimately shows how the data can be analyzed using area between curves. As the Gini Index is frequently applied in economics and political science, this topic emphasizes the value of advanced mathematics in interdisciplinary studies. By considering the index, students interested in the social sciences can engage in meaningful mathematical inquiry. Session Four Five 9:00 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Merritt Hall 5219 (Computer Lab) Intermediate Intermediate MyOpenMath Techniques Matthew Watts, Assistant Professor Tidewater Chesapeake Libby Watts, Assistant Professor Tidewater Norfolk An intermediate workshop on the open source LMS MyOpenMath (MOM). Attendees will learn how to find, edit, and create questions for assessments as well as explore other advanced features in MOM. Attending the introductory workshop is recommended. Session Goals: Attendees will learn advanced techniques in creating assessments in MyOpenMath. 10:00 a.m. 10:10 a.m. Break Session Five 10:10 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Merritt Hall 5206 SDV 108 + MTE 1-2-3 = Synergy + Success Dana MItchell, Math Instructor Tidewater Portsmouth Laura MacIntyre, Math Instructor Tidewater Portsmouth The presenters will discuss lessons learned from creating a three-credit sixteen week MTE 1,2,3 course. Students were concurrently enrolled in a three-credit linked section of SDV 108, taught by a math instructor and emphasized study skills from a math perspective. Session Goals: To share the benefits of teaching "soft skills" to developmental students and discuss the pros and cons of offering MTE 1,2,3 as a single course. Project Goals: Recommend modifications to update the VPT and Calculus placement tests. Session Goals: To update the math community and gather feedback on current projects. Session Five 10:10 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Merritt Hall 5208 Intermediate Graphing a Quadratic Equation in Two Variables Which Has an XY Term, but NOT by Using an Implicit Function Grapher or Rotation of Axes Thomas Garrett, Associate Professor Tidewater Portsmouth This session will explain how to draw the graph of a conic section using a common graphing calculator when the graph has an axis of symmetry which is not parallel to one of the coordinate axes (i.e., the equation has an xy term). Session Goals: Have you ever wanted to show your students, when teaching the conic sections, that some quadratic equations in two variables have an xy term, and the graph of that equation has an axis of symmetry that is NOT parallel to a coordinate axis, but you gave up that goal since you did not think it right to use an implicit function grapher? Achieving that goal with an ordinary graphing calculator is something you can do after this session. Session Five 10:10 a.m. - 11:10 a.m. Merritt Hall 5209 Just Flip It! : Tips and Techniques That Can Help You Flip Any Math Course Theresa Thomas, Math Department Chair Blue Ridge Want to make you course more engaging?? Try flipping your course or just try some new tips to increase student engagement. Tips and techniques will be shared that can be used in any classroom whether it s flipped or not. Flipping strategies will be shared as well. Session Goals: Engage the audience to provide a hands on demonstration of the techniques shared in this presentation. Project Goal: To develop consistent statewide guidelines for the application of calculators in mathematics education. We ll explore math as an art form and the challenges of training creative mathematical minds. Session Goals: Have fun getting everyone to participate in a fun math project. Paul Lee Professional Development Grant and Workshop Mini-Grant Awards Grants for reassigned time and monetary awards are available for creative, innovative projects and research in discipline, instructional, career, and organizational development. Workshop mini-grants provide funding for professional development activities such as workshops and conferences involving at least two VCCS colleges. Peer Group Conferences Peer group conferences encourage intra/interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, planning, forecasting, learning, and networking in the VCCS. Each peer group will have the opportunity to meet every other year to discuss substantive issues related to curriculum revision, integration of technology, instructional innovations, and discipline updates. Peer group meetings are organized by a planning committee comprised of individuals in the discipline or peer group. Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence (RCTE) Increase the quality of your students learning by teaching enthusiastically with the latest discipline knowledge, instructional practices, and technological advances. Learn what other teachers, both within and outside of your discipline, are doing across your college and the VCCS.
