Station 1: 1920s MUSIC 1.) Start by listening to the music at this station. You can skip around to hear a variety of songs if you like. Look at the playlist to identify the song titles and artists. Look at the images on the image sheet, too. 2.) Look at the playlist sheet. There are 3 songs that have a red star next to them. These 3 songs are directly mentioned in The Great Gatsby. The characters know these songs. The lyrics of these 3 songs are printed out and on the table. Choose ONE of the three lyric sheets and take a close look at it. Which song did you choose? Based on the lyrics, what is the MOOD of this song? In other words, how is this song supposed to make you FEEL? 3.) How is the popular music from the 1920s different from or similar to popular music today?

Station 2: 1920s FASHION 1.) Start by reading the 3 info cards: FASHION OF THE 1920s, WOMEN S FASHION, and MEN S FASHION. 2.) Answer the following questions based on the information you read: What was revolutionary about some of the new styles in women s fashion? Describe the flapper. What did she wear? What was her attitude? 3.) Next, take a close look at all of the images of 1920s clothing and hair styles. What patterns do you notice? What trends were popular? List as many as you can:

Station 3: F. SCOTT FITZGERALD 1.) Start by reading the 5 sheets about Fitzgerald s life. You can read them in any order, just be sure to read all 5. 2.) Answer the following questions based on the information you read: What are the titles of the 4 novels Fitzgerald wrote and published during his life? What was Fitzgerald s wife s name? What connections do you see between the story of The Great Gatsby (the plot, characters, setting) and Fitzgerald s life experiences? 3.) Write down 1 fact from Fitzgerald s biography that you found interesting: Write down 1 question that you have after reading Fitzgerald s biography:

Station 4: ZELDA FITZGERALD 1.) Start by reading the biography sheet about Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. 2.) Next, look at the photos of Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. 3.) Answer the following questions based on the information you read: How would you describe the Fitzgeralds marriage? What kinds of hobbies and/or jobs did Zelda have? How did Zelda die? 4.) Zelda Fitzgerald is considered an icon of the 1920s. Why is she an icon (a major symbol) of this time period? What did she represent? 5.) On the poster at this station, compare Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald to other celebrity couples who are famous today or were famous in the 20 th century.

Station 5: PROHIBITION 1.) Spend time looking closely at all of the documents and images at this station. You don t have to look at them in any particular order. 2.) Answer the following questions based on the information you read: What was the 18 th Amendment to the Constitution? What did prohibition mean? Who was Al Capone and what was he famous for? 3.) Choose any ONE of the primary source documents (the 18 th Amendment, the photos, the report of illegal alcohol smuggling, or Al Capone s Army registration card). What information did you learn from the document you chose? What questions do you have about the document?

Station 6: THE GREAT GATSBY 1.) The Great Gatsby was a huge success when it was published, and it made Fitzgerald a major celebrity. The novel has remained successful ever since, and many consider it the greatest American novel ever written. It has been called the exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, and our impressions of life in the Roaring 20s primarily come from Fitzgerald s descriptions. Start by reading through the recent New York Times article Judging Gatsby by Its Cover(s) published on April 25, 2013. (NOTE: There are two copies of this article at the station, and you don t have to read the whole thing, just the parts underlined in red.) What is the conflict that the new cover design (the design based on the new movie) has caused? How many different languages has Gatsby been translated into? 2.) Look at the cards that show some of the many different covers of The Great Gatsby that have been published. Which numbers (the cards have numbers at the top) are your top 3 favorites? 1. 2. 3. Why did you choose the one you chose as your top favorite? Which covers (list the numbers) do you think best reflect the Jazz Age and the 1920s? 1. 2. 3. Why did you choose the one you chose for the #1 spot?
