Everything you need to know about Open Syllabus The Open Syllabus tool is one of the most useful tools for students in ZoneCours. This tool generates an interactive online syllabus that is established by your professor and is accessible to the students. The Course menu includes all of the components that are normally in a regular course syllabus: Presentation, Contact Information, Learning Materials, Evaluations and the Course Organisation. The Open Syllabus allows the professor to edit, in real time, the teaching materials, the course description or add details about the evaluation methods during the semester. The syllabus is then quickly published to the students, who then take note of the changes. This document explains how Open Syllabus operates, and includes the following sections: What do I do with the Open Syllabus? How do I access the Open Syllabus? The Course Menu The display zone of the syllabus s sections How to navigate between the display zone and the course menu How to make subsections appear How to access the course list of homework

What do I do with the Open Syllabus? Here at HEC Montréal, the Open Syllabus tool replaces the usual paper version of the syllabus. The tool is used when you would like to: Learn about your course (e.g. the overall objective, learning objectives, its place in your program, how it contributes to your personal and professional development etc.) by viewing the information in Presentation. Learn about the contact information of the staff associated to your course, like the coordinator, the professor, and the assistants as well as details about appointments by consulting the information in Contact Information. Learn about the required and optional learning materials (books, articles, business cases, videos, etc.) and how to get your hands on the materials (at the HEC library or at the Coop HEC) by consulting the information in Learning Material. See the upcoming evaluations (Homework, Quiz, Exam, Log, etc.), the terms (individual, in team, in business, case analysis, etc.) and percentage granted to each evaluation by consulting the information in Evaluation. Review the content of each course and the homework & reading needed before, during and after each course by consulting the information in Course Organisation. How do I access the Open Syllabus? Every course site has the tool Open Syllabus. The link to the tool is located on the vertical menu of the course site, on the left side of the application. Click on the link Open Syllabus to access the tool.

The Course Menu The screen of the tool Open Syllabus is divided in two zones (panes). The right pane is named the Course menu which includes the course sections: 1. Presentation: Allows you to see the overview of your course, like the objectives and the learning strategy. 2. Contact information: Allows you to see the contact information of the staff associated to your course, like the professor and the assistants. 3. Learning Materials: Allows you to see the references of all the resources used in your course. 4. Evaluation: Allows you to see all the evaluations 5. Course organisation: Allows you to see the development and the time sequence of the course All those sections are found in the entire Open Syllabus. To ensure an easier navigation, all Open Syllabus in ZoneCours have the same structure. The display zone of the syllabus sections The right pane is the display zone of the syllabus sections. By clicking on one of the five sections (Presentation, Contact information, Learning Material, Evaluation & Course organisation) or on a subsection (like an evaluation or a specific course) in the right pane, you will see the section s content in the left pane.

How to navigate between the display zone and the course menu To show only the display zone in a full screen, click on the arrow in between the two panes. To have the Course menu reappear, click on the arrow a second time. How to show subsections To see the subsection of a particular section: 1. Click on Open Syllabus on the vertical menu of your course site 2. Click on the located next to the title of the section in the left pane 3. You will see the subsection appears. To consult the content of a subsection, click on the title and the content will appear in the right pane. 4. If the section does not have a subsection, the will not next to the section name.

How to access to the course list of homework To see the homework that you have to complete before each class: 1. Click on Open Syllabus on the vertical menu of your course site. 2. Click on the located next to the section Course Organisation in the left pane. 3. Click on the course of your choice. 4. In the right pane, under «Activities/Resources before session», you can see the reading and/or the exercises that you have to complete before the selected course. 5. In the case of a file available online, click on the link under the reference. Another tab will then open to provide you with access to the online PDF version or to the database of the HEC library. For more information on the Open Syllabus, contact DAIP at daip@hec.ca
