Musical Theatre BA (Hons) BA (Hons) Musical Theatre at Winchester combines modules in drama, dance, voice and performing arts to create a vibrant undergraduate programme that engages with historical and contemporary works of musical theatre. Course overview This course offers embodied learning which brings together movement, acting and singing with both theory and practice in a unique interdisciplinary environment. All students follow a common first year that provides a foundation of skills training and understanding of the history and contexts within which musical theatre is made. Year 2 continues to balance discussion of how musical theatre works are put together, and how they impact audiences, with opportunities to develop practically. In addition, there departmental optional modules providing a range of choices through which students can begin to personalise their experience, and opportunities to study abroad in America. The final year offers further opportunity for specialisation alongside preparation for employment. External experiences such as internships and collaborations are accompanied by a directed production project and an independent supervised project in a field of choice. The Performing Arts department provide eight bespoke studio and performance spaces and offer the latest technology for student productions. The Studios are located on the King Alfred Campus. Learning and teaching This programme combines many styles of teaching and learning, including practical workshops and classes, performance projects, lectures, seminars, tutorials, masterclasses and supervised independent projects. The combination is negotiated for each student based on their interests and needs. The University aims to develop students as confident learners by enabling them to acquire the knowledge and skills to excel in their studies and to be transferable to further studies or within the field of employment. Staff and students form a community of learners who, together and independently, 3

seek to generate and exchange knowledge. Over the duration of their programme, students develop independent and critical learning, building confidence and expertise progressively through independent and collaborative research, problem solving, and analysis with the support of staff. Students take responsibility for their own learning and are encouraged to make use of the wide range of available learning resources available. In addition to the formally scheduled contact time (i.e. lectures, seminars etc), students are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the programme team, personal tutors and the wide range of services available to students within the University. Key features of the student experience are performance modules and assessment, professional internships, workshops from international professional Artists, and the chance to work with staff on their own performance projects and research activities Career opportunities Students pursue careers as musical theatre professionals creating, performing, researching or writing; working with young people as a teacher or in community contexts; or working for producing/receiving houses.
