Important Information Study Modes and Duration We offer a variety of study modes to suit individual circumstances. Role of the Architectural Technologist Architectural Technologists provide high level design skills in the development of new, and refurbished, build projects of all types including interior design and space planning. Architectural technologists need to demonstrate a strong sense of design awareness and a broad understanding of traditional and contemporary technologies employed in the construction process. They need to be competent in the use of sophisticated information and communication tools and techniques. Career prospects Architectural technologists may lead their own practices or be employed by architectural practices, architectural design consultants, construction and specialist contractors, public sector authorities, retailers or other organisations who have requirements for design and technology services. Architectural technologists are highly valued and graduates from this programme will be much sought after by significant design-led employing organisations. The programme The programme combines academic study with the application of professional skills and competencies required by the architectural technologist. Consistent with the multidisciplinary team-based approach of the modern built environment industry you will engage with fellow students from the surveying, construction management, and property management disciplines. You will study a rich mix of subjects which are critical to the professional role of the architectural technologist including technical, design, legal, and commercial areas. The programme is modular in structure and credits are awarded for the successful completion of each module. Role of the Building Surveyor Building surveyors provide professional advice and services to building owners. The areas of work that a building surveyor can be expected to undertake is very wide ranging and most building surveyors tend to specialise after broad training. The areas building surveyors work in are: design of new buildings, specification and supervision of construction work, refurbishments/alterations and extensions, acquisition and condition surveys, diagnosis of building defects together with the specification and supervision of repair work, implementing and managing maintenance work and even negotiations with adjacent property owners when building works affect adjacent property owners legal rights. Some building surveyors, due to their recognised expertise even become expert witnesses in legal disputes. Building surveyors need to be educated and trained to the high standards set by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. They also need to be flexible, self-motivated people with well-developed communication skills and a high level of professionalism and competence. Career prospects Graduates from this programme are much sought after by private practices, local and central government and client organisations. The programme is structured around blending industrial experience with University learning and integrates three 6- month periods of paid industrial experience in the first three years of study. Role of the Quantity Surveyor A quantity surveyor manages financial aspects of the construction process. A quantity surveyor will provide effective cost management and cost control expertise to construction, civil engineering and associated construction activities ranging from initial feasibility studies through to design, construction, maintenance, refurbishment, and demolition. Quantity surveyors can work on behalf of contracting organisations or as representatives of the client, always aiming to ensure that the project is completed within budget. Quantity surveyors often act as project managers on behalf of the client, with responsibility for the selection, management and co-ordination of the resources needed for the execution of a construction project. Upon successful completion of the programme at an appropriate level you will be able to transfer onto an Honours Degree programme in one of the following specialist areas: Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Construction Project Management, Property Management and Investment or Architectural Design and Technology. The programme recognises the general requirements of a range of construction related vocations and encompasses the technical and practical aspects required to satisfy the needs of the market. Students are encouraged to enter the programme from a variety of academic or employment backgrounds. The programme will be of particular value to those seeking to commence a career in construction and property, those wishing to progress within the industry, or those returning to education after some absence. The school provides strong academic and personal support for all students. Teaching is carried out by means of lectures and seminars complemented by project activity and study visits. Career prospects The programme provides a gateway to professional and technical careers with a wide range of employers such as construction contractors, professional consultants, local authorities, housing associations, and government departments. Professional accreditation Progression to the degree programmes identified above can lead to opportunities to pursue professional membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) or the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
