PHOENIX CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING John C. Birdlebough Library April 8, 2013 7:00 p.m. Board President Earl Rudy, called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. Keith Caltabiano MEMBERS PRESENT Diana Cook Kevin Dix Dan Dunn Paul Gilchriest Debbie St. Phillips Keith Watkins Brian Caswell MEMBERS ABSENT Superintendent Belfield OTHERS PRESENT Administrative Team Keith Caltabiano, led the Pledge of Allegiance. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE None VISITORS Superintendent Judy Belfield said it has been very quiet around the District the last few weeks. The Winter Drumline took 1 st place in competition for the 3 rd year in a row. The JCB Baseball and Softball team had their first games of the season. The fields looked great. The District is fortunate to have so many great teachers and I am proud to report that one of our own math teachers from EJD Middle School, Wendy Sachel was selected to a Nationwide Dream Team by LearnZillion. Wendy was chosen based on her knowledge and understanding of the Common Core Standards and her ability to create high quality and highly conceptual lessons that are understood by students. She was one of 200 teachers chosen from 3000 entries. Wendy will receive an allexpense paid trip to TeachFest, an event sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work with other teachers, Common Core experts and content specialists. Judy will be attending the JCB Chorus Concert and Community Youth Awards dinner on April 17 th. The Oswego County BOCES Honor Society on April 18 th. The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 25 th. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

It was moved by Keith Caltabiano, seconded by Danny Dunn, that the minutes of the Board of Education Meeting dated April 8, 2013 be approved. Technology Director Ted Love shared an Info graphic with the Board regarding the funding, operations and investment in virtualization technology. The Board asked for a 1-3 year plan for the Technology Department. There was a discussion on the District website and revamping it to make it more user friendly. Ted mentioned that he could contract BOCES to come and meet with the Board to discuss what they would like to see on the site. They would give the District (3) mock ups of the site and they could decide what layout they would like to use. Ted will contact BOCES and set up a time for them to meet with the Board at one of the Board meetings in June. Business Administrator Karl Seckner gave an overview of the Phoenix Central School District Budget for 2013-14. In the 2013-14 State Budget Phoenix will receive $739,495 in Gap Elimination Restoration and a $50,593 increase in Foundation Aid. A $409,000 increase in State Aid over the Governor s Executive Budget. Therefore, the Budget gap has decreased from $1.6 million to $1.2 million. The Board will have to have a future discussion on a School Resource Officer. The Minor project fund was also put back in the budget. The Board will have to decide if they would like to continue the NYS School Board Association membership for $8K per year. They are always out advocating for schools and are in Albany knocking down the doors to fight for us to get the aid that we deserve. The District must adopt a budget by April 26 th. The next Board of Education meeting is April 25 th. The Public Hearing on the 2013-14 Budget is May 13 th @ JCB High School in the Cafeteria. The Budget Vote is on May 21 st at EJD Middle School. It was moved by Debbie St. Phillips, seconded by Kevin Dix, that based on the Superintendent s recommendations the entire Personnel Appointments be accepted.
