The course has two areas of concentration: 1) knowing ABOUT computers and computing, and 2) knowing HOW to use computer applications for productivity and for problem solving and data analysis. Students are given a solid introduction to computers and the software applications they will use in their professional and personal lives. Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to: Approach new computer-based tasks more easily and with greater confidence Describe key terms and concepts associated with computers and software applications Demonstrate electronic information management habits (e.g. backing up files, organizing files in a logical fashion, transferring files to various storage areas, etc.) Discuss the functions of computers in classrooms, businesses, homes, and other environments Discuss the theoretical background of software programs Analyze a variety of problems, select the appropriate software application to solve problems, and use software programs to find and/or present solutions Locate, open, and use the following software applications at an intermediate level: e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, web page development, internet search strategies, and a BlackBoard course management system Analyze and discuss social and ethical issues related to the increased use of technology in education, business, and society 1

COURSE SESSIONS AND COURSE MATERIALS COURSE SESSIONS Each class session includes a Video Lecture. It is necessary that every student read the ANNOUNCEMENTS posted in Blackboard before viewing each session. ANNOUNCEMENTS will be updated before the start of every session. Students are responsible for viewing each video and completing the Assignments/Activities and Projects on their respective due dates. While online courses are generally asynchronous, they are not self paced. Students must complete all work on assigned due dates (view Course Calendar located in Syllabus/Calendar button on the BlackBoard). COURSE MATERIALS: Video, PowerPoint, Handouts In order to assist with different learning styles each video session includes downloadable/printable versions of all of the materials that will be available on the course website (Sessions/Documents button located on BlackBoard). COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments/Activities and Projects Assignments/Activities and Projects are designed to develop skills in real world problem solving and data analysis using productivity applications. All Assignments/Activities and Projects should be completed and turned in by the due dates mentioned in the Course Calendar located in Syllabus/Calendar button on the BlackBoard. In addition, all submitted work will be checked for correct grammar and spelling. 2

Prior Computer Competency This class provides instruction in many aspects of computer literacy, not just the ability to use a software application. There is no option to test out of this class by showing competence in one or more of the software applications being used for instruction and learning. Students who enter this class with application competencies will be able to expand their knowledge and skills of the applications. Assignment Due Dates Assignments/Activities and Projects are to be submitted, as assigned, through the BlackBoard Digital Drop Box. All Assignments/Activities and Projects are due by midnight of the respective dates mentioned in the calendar. Please IGNORE any other instruction concerning the Assignments/Activities and Projects submission dates given on the video lecture. Due dates for all Assignments/Activities and Projects are listed on the Course Calendar located in Syllabus/Calendar button on the BlackBoard. Late submissions will not be accepted. Submission of Assignments/Activities and Projects All Assignments/Activities and Projects will be available in the Assignments button located on the BlackBoard. All Assignments/Activities and Projects will be accompanied by an instruction sheet and grading sheet along with the Template for Assignments/Activities and Projects, if required. Students are required to download the Assignments/Activities and Projects template from the BlackBoard and save it to their computer. All Assignments/Activities and Projects file should be named as First Name_Last Name_ Assignments/Activities and Projects name For example: John_Doe_Word Project Do not work on Assignments/Activities and Projects directly from BlackBoard. Always download them to your computer. Using the Digital Drop Box All Assignments/Activities and Projects must be turned in through the Digital Drop Box. The Digital Drop Box is located in the Tools button on the BlackBoard. Use the SEND FILE button to send your Assignments/Activities and Projects to your instructor. Below is a model of the Digital Drop Box. The Name field must contain Your First Name_Your Last Name_Assignment/Activity or Project Name. For Example, John_Doe_Budget Project Browse the file from your computer and click Submit. You will get a message saying that your Assignment/Activity or Project has been sent to your instructor. 3

Note: A copy of your Assignment/Activity or Project is automatically saved in your Digital Drop Box when you SEND FILE. Assignments/Activities and Projects Grading Assignments are individual assignments, and individual work must be submitted for grading. Please follow the grading instruction for each Assignment/Activity or Project that will be available in the Assignments button on the BlackBoard. NOTE: No grade will be given to any student for work that is identical to another student s work. Neither student will receive a grade for that Assignment/Activity or Project. Quiz Policy There will be seven quizzes. Each quiz will have 10 multiple choice question (excluding Midterm and Final). All quizzes are taken in Blackboard and will be timed. All quizzes will be available in the Quizzes folder located under the Assignment button on the BlackBoard. Dates for the quizzes are available on the Course Calendar. Quizzes must be taken as per the dates mentioned on the Course Calendar. All the quizzes will be timed. The time for each quiz will be announced before the start of each quiz. The quiz will be available from 6am (PST) to 11pm (PST) as per the dates mentioned on the Course Calendar. All quizzes are password based and can be taken only once and must be completed, once started, within the given time. The password for each quiz will be announced before the start of each quiz. Midterm Exam The midterm exam will be online. You will follow the same procedures as you would for a quiz with the exception of the length of the midterm exam. The midterm will be available in the Quizzes folder located under the Assignment button on the BlackBoard. Final Exam The Final Exam has two parts. One is a hands-on-final and the other is a Final multiple choice quiz. The Final exam will be open to the students from 6am (PST) on 06/28/06 to 6pm (PST) on 06/30/06. The final quiz policy will be similar to all the other quizzes. The Final Quiz will be available in the Quizzes folder located under the Assignment button on the BlackBoard. The hands on final must be turned in anytime by 06/30/06 by 6pm (PST). The hands-on-final must be turned in through the Digital Drop Box. You will follow the same procedure for turning in handson-final as you would for Assignments/Activities and Projects. Web Page Project The video lecture will be using Microsoft FrontPage to design web pages for one of the Projects. All ASU computers on the Main Campus are equipped with Microsoft FrontPage. If you choose not to utilize Frontpage, a Power Point presentation will be available on the BlackBoard (under Sessions/Documents button) that will help you to design Web Pages using Microsoft Word. Usage of any other software, other than Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft Word, for Web page designing will be the sole responsibility of the students. 4

Note: You do not have to turn in the web page project through the digital drop box. Your instructor will have your website URL. Student Online Research Groups The class online BlackBoard account will be used to facilitate your learner-centered Research Team Project. You will find your Group Page, which will be assigned to you as the semester proceeds, located in the Communication button on the BlackBoard. You will post your answers in the discussion board available in the Group Page. Students will participate in an online Research Team Project for one of the following topics: Computer Security, Copyright for Students, Adaptive/Assistive Technology, and Emerging Technology. Information from these discussions will be included on the Final Exam and all students will have access to the research from each group in order to prepare for the final exam. Student Individual Study The Student Individual Study will be based on the book Using Technology in the Classroom by Bitter & Pierson, published by Allyn & Bacon. The student will be asked to answer some questions using the book. The instructions for this project will be given to the students as the semester proceeds. Extra Credit Extra Credit is possible up to 10 points. Two five-point extra credit activities will be available. 1) Mail-Merge project using Microsoft Word 2) Advanced Excel extra credit. An announcement will be made when the extra credits are available. Mail-Merge extra credit will be due on 06/16/06 by 11pm (PST). Advanced Excel extra credit will be due on 06/28/06 by 11pm (PST). All Extra Credits must be turned in through the Digital Drop Box. Send an email note to your instructor when you turn in the Extra Credits. F. ATTENDANCE POLICY/PARTICIPATION While online classes are generally asynchronous, they are NOT correspondence or self-paced. Students must virtually attend, defined as logging into Blackboard and reading announcements, interacting with colleagues and instructors; posting questions, thoughts, homework assignments, discussion boards etc. 5

G. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING EDT 321 is an upper division Mathematical (MA and CS) General Studies requirement course. Grading is standardized for the course using a plus/minus grading scale as follows: 98.0-100 % 323.0-330.0 points A+ 94.0-97.9% 310.0-322.9 points A 90.0-93.9% 297.0-309.9 points A- 87.0-89.9% 287.0-296.9 points B+ 84.0-86.9% 277.0-286.9 points B 80.0-83.9 % 264.0-276.9 points B- 77.0-79.9% 254.0-263.9 points C+ 70.0-76.9 % 231.0-253.9 points C 60.0-69.9 % 198.0-230.9 points D 0-59.9 % 0-197.9 points E Each Assignments/Activities and Projects will include an instruction sheet and grading criteria. These will be discussed and distributed on the BlackBoard in the Assignments button. H. You are suggested to visit this folder at the beginning of each Session. Instructor Info This area will provide instructor information and email addresses of program director and instructor. Assignments This area will contain a summary of all course Assignments/Activities and Projects for the entire EDT321 course. External Links This tab will contain any additional information related to the course work. Communication Group Pages will be used for the Team Research Project. Discussion Board A "Water Cooler" will be provided for personal conversations. A "Help Wanted" discussion forum will also be available for those folks that would like to clarify any concerns about each session. They can post their queries and other student can help their colleagues. Tools Students should submit all Assignments/Activities and Projects using the Digital Drop Box located in the Tools Menu on the BlackBoard. Grading Sheets will be returned to students using the Digital Drop box or email within one week of submission. M. REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration: Students not currently registered at ASU must complete a brief online application for non-degree seeking students located at Undergraduate application: http://www.asu.edu/apply/. Applicants who are not high school graduates or who are younger than 18 years of age must submit official ACT or SAT scores that meet the high school aptitude requirements of the university. Undergraduate application, the non-resident application fee is $50, and the resident application fee is $25.Once admitted students can register in one of two ways: 1) ASU Online Once students have received an ASUrite name and password, they can enroll in any online summer courses at http://asuonline.asu.edu/. The ASUrite name and password will be provided in the admissions acceptance letter to the student. 2) Sun Dial Once students have received their 9-digit ASU ID number in an admissions acknowledgment or letter, they can register via ASU s SunDial registration system at (480)350-1500. Information on procedures for SunDial can be found at http://www.asu.edu/registrar/registration/intouch.html. Enrollment via Sundial will require a PIN, which is a 4-digit number consisting of the student s month and day of birth. Course Access/Location: Provided at beginning of class N.
