Why UK? You add the so what? Gets round tariffs Large market in Europe Increase world wide sales UK Government Incentives ( 6.3 million) UK workers = long hours, low wages, strikes less common English spoken

Why Burnaston? Burnaston is a village in Derbyshire, 7 miles south of the city of Derby On a spider diagram jot the reasons why Toyota would have wanted to locate near Derby as I pan out from the factory. Why Derby?

What did Toyota create? Read this slide to yourself 3000 jobs in the factory 2700 jobs in construction phase 220,000 cars a year, using Just-In Time system (components supplied to assembly lines minutes before they are needed) Employees with greater spending power Govt. gave 6.3 million as an incentive

Impacts of Toyota What 3 areas of geography are usually asked for when analysing the impacts of an event or proposal? Using your sheet colour code or use letters to put the impacts into the following categories: - Social = S - Economic = Ec - Environmental = En Do this as fast as possible Once you have completed this label them either Positive and Negative. + or - (key)

Stakeholders: what are these? The Burnaston factory polarised local opinion. Many people were extremely grateful that Toyota would bring jobs to a region that had suffered with unemployment. Others were angered by the use of a large greenfield site. NIMBYs?

In twos or threes... Use the Stakeholder evidence to complete your sheet. Remember to add your views about the positive and negative impacts. Finally: make a personal decision as to whether the Toyota Factory is a good or bad thing for the Derby and write your viewpoint on the back of the sheet, try to explain and justify your position. (Similar to Problem Solving task)

Case Study Exam Question CS14 For a named MNC that has located in a different country: a) Name the MNC and the new b) Describe the reasons for c) Explain the social, economic and environmental effects of the development. 8 mins/8 marks

I remember a similar photo question set in a past paper about a Samsung factory? Di. Suggest disadvantages that the building of this factory may have on the environment (2) ii. Suggest advantages and disadvantages that the building of this factory may have on the local economy and people (6)

Positive Multiplier Effect The multiplier effect shows how one factory can have a large effect on the area around it. The multiplier effect can be either positive or negative. It can increase the opportunities of an area or can lead to decrease in opportunities.

In 2 s try to put the following points into a cycle.. 1. Jobs are available at Toyota 2. There is an increase in taxes & business rates paid to the council 3.People have higher wages 4.Jobs in support industries. 5. More shops, bars etc. open 6. More companies are tempted to set up in the area 7.People have more money to spend on services 8. Council invests more money in education, roads and housing 9. Young people leave school with more qualifications 10. Sense of pride in the area

The Negative Multiplier Effect. Many people are worried what will happen if Toyota shut down their factory. With your partner brainstorm what could happen.

Multiplier Effects The multiplier effect shows how one factory can have a large effect on the area around it. The multiplier effect can be either positive or negative. It can increase the opportunities of an area or can lead to decrease in opportunities. Which of the stakeholders referred to these effects?

Toyota In 2010 the car industry was in great difficulty. Toyota offered voluntary redundancy and cut working hours to 4 days a week. What impact do you think this could have on the area? The recall of the Toyota Prius on safety grounds happened in 2012, how might this affect Toyota and Burnaston?

The Future.. The future is bright for Toyota. They remain the world s largest car manufacturer 2014 sales were on the up in UK and EU They are at the forefront of developing greener cars, eg Hydrogen power.

Just a Minute... 1 minute, no hesitations, deviations, repetitions. You may use what ever you can fit onto a whiteboard to help
