Welcome to Carlsbad International School Our vision is to produce fine young men and women who are highly prepared for post-graduate education and, most importantly, ready to become positive and productive leaders in today s global society. 4

Welcome to Carlsbad International School, an exceptional college-preparatory school located in the heart of Europe, in the picturesque and historical town of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. Our mission is to produce fine young men and women, highly prepared for higher education and, most importantly, ready to be positive and productive leaders in today s global world. Our graduates will learn because they want to, because they are motivated self-starters, and because they have learned to thrive in a dynamic academic environment. Our students will be tomorrow s leaders in the world, in politics, in business, in social circles, and in many other important ways, which is why we aim to produce confident, intelligent, and independent thinkers. Our students come from all over the world to form a close-knit and diverse community. In the Carlsbad International School family, every student is important and receives personal attention from our highly qualified teachers, mentors and administrators, and our residential halls provide a welcome and comforting home-away-from-home. Our programmes, classes, cultural trips, recreational excursions, sports and activities are uniquely designed to emphasise the importance of community. We truly believe that, no man is an island, and that when we work together as a united team, our successes are truly greater than the individuals we are made up of. By creating a blend of traditional and 21st Century learning methods, including small classes, experienced teachers, passionate mentors and rigorous courses, Carlsbad International School provides a wealth of academic, artistic, athletic and service opportunities. At CIS we recognise how unique our students are, how important their contributions, and how talented, passionate and ambitious they may be. We challenge them to use their talents to make connections with the community around them, to find their own voice, and contribute to their world. The experience we offer is transformational. This mix of cultures, languages, backgrounds and experience, coupled with the strength of our team of teachers, coaches and administrators, and more importantly, their proven ability to support our diverse student body, is what makes Carlsbad International School inspiring, exciting and unique. When you visit Karlovy Vary and the CIS campus, you will notice that even the location is remarkable. Both elegant and historic, this region of Bohemia blends natural beauty with beautiful architecture, making it popular as both a spa resort and getaway destination. It is a place that makes it easy for our students to feel comfortable and safe, to be themselves, and to try new things they may have never, ever thought they would try. No matter what your dream, we have a plan that s right for you and maybe even some advice! Ultimately, however, we challenge you to take the lead. The hard work and unique talents of our founding class of students will become a part of our history, and will become the success stories we will boast about for years to come. When you graduate from Carlsbad International School, we know you ll be ready for anything French studies at the Sorbonne, international relations at Georgetown, a mission to Africa, engineering at Caltech, an audition in L.A. and, most of all, a life built on discovery. Why choose Carlsbad International School? Our students choose CIS because they know they are unique and deserve a school that recognises and cultivates their talents, in a way that takes them to places never dreamed before. We cannot wait to welcome you to Carlsbad International School, and I encourage you to contact us and see why our school might be the best fit for you or your student. It is an exciting new beginning in Karlovy Vary. I hope you will be a part of it! Tim Sloman, School Founder ( 2013-2016) 5

Find Your Connection Find Your Contribution Carlsbad International School students will graduate with a prestigious IB Diploma, exceptional academic skills and placement at top universities around the world. As an English-speaking, international school, we provide an immersive language environment, ensuring that English is not only the language of the classroom, but also of the dinner table, the fitness centre, the student apartments, and even the language of new friendships. By focusing on the whole student, a CIS education does not end in the classroom, but extends to all aspects of the student s life, including their academic, social and emotional development. The variety of skills our students learn puts them on a road towards a successful education, career and life in general. 6

We commit ourselves to helping each student in their journey to reaching their full potential, providing opportunities for life-long learning, inspiring academic success, developing inquiring minds, and growing our students as positive members of our local and global communities, demonstrating acceptance, tolerance and compassion for all.

14 Challenge Yourself Activities At CIS

Activities. CIS students participate in three or four weekly activities throughout the year. They have a choice of a wide variety of sports, outdoor recreation, student groups and community service activities. Our selection of sports includes several team and individual sports. We also offer other outdoor adventure opportunities, such as mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding. The Karlovy Vary community offers a wide range of sports fields, gymnasiums, tennis courts, equestrian clubs, ropes courses and kayaking opportunities within a short distance of campus. Furthermore, there are a number of 18-hole golf courses, a skate park and a local ice rink. In addition to physical exercise, students must complete one community service activity per academic year, such as teaching English at a local school, volunteering at a local hospital or helping out at a local animal shelter. CIS is proud to offer the Duke of Edinburgh s International Award to its students, a prestigious outdoor education and leadership programme that provides students valuable opportunities to explore the natural world and put into practical use what skills they have learnt throughout their project. The CIS Snow Sports Programme allows students to ski or snowboard every weekend from January to March on our local mountain 15 minutes away. Klínovec is a great place to for beginners, especially with our members of faculty who are trained instructors. Activities at CIS cultivate a healthy body and mind, and encourage our students to try new forms of recreation. If a student is ready for a physical and mental challenge, we have an activity for them. 15

Explore Europe from CIS Experience The Beauty Of Bohemia Our Host City - Karlovy Vary Our hometown city of Karlovy Vary, is set on the banks of the Ohre and Tepla rivers, with spectacular hotels and centuries-old architecture. KV was named after Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, who founded the city in 1370. The town is now a thriving spa and wellness resort, as well as a growing centre of commerce. Apart from its spas, Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad in English), is also well known for its porcelain and glass manufacturing, its Becher liquor, its popular spa wafers, Mattoni Mineral Water and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the 4th largest in Europe. A Rich History - The Czech People Although the Czech Republic as we know it today only came into existence in 1993, the land, people and culture have a long and distinguished history, and include many famous people among its number. At the top of a very long list of notable Czechs include the well-known names of Sigmund Freud (Příbor), Franz Kafka (Prague), Antonín Dvořák (Nelahozeves), Bedřich Smetana (Litomyšl), Jan Janský (Prague), Johann Mendl (Hynčice), St.Wenceslas (Bohemia), and the founder of Karlovy Vary, King Charles IV. More recent history, however, includes Ivan Lendl, one of the most dominant figures in men s tennis throughout the 1980s and 90s; Martina Navratilova, perhaps the greatest women s tennis player to have ever lived; Ivana Trump, the infamous socialite, author and entrepreneur; and Jaroslav Seifert, poet and winner of the 1984 Nobel Prize for Literature. At a Glance - The Czech Republic There are currently 10.3 million people (14th largest in Europe) living in the Czech Republic s 78,800 km 2, surrounded by mountain ranges and filled with highlands and downs, lowlands and plains, rivers and forests. The Czech Republic shares borders with Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria, and uses the Czech Crown or Koruna (CZK) as currency. The country s main cities are its capital, Prague, Brno, Ostrava and Pilsen. Due to the country s wealth of historical monuments, spas and natural beauty, the Czech Republic continues to be an attractive destination. With ten monuments listed with UNESCO, the country is ranked seventh in the world in regard to number of listings. There are well over 2000 castles in this relatively small country, with Karlstejn Castle recognised as its crown jewel, and only 1.5 hours from Karlovy Vary. The weather is rarely extreme, filled equally with sunny days, cloudy skies, occasional rain, and snow in the winter. Average temperatures range from 0-19 C (32-66 F). The Capital - Prague Prague is one of the most visited and best loved cities in Europe, with many wonderful places and things to see, including the Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Square and Prague Castle, to name a few. Charles University in Prague was founded in 1348, and is the third oldest university in the world. The National Theatre in Prague was opened in 1833, and continues to remain closely tied to the national identity and independence of the Czech people. 16
