University of Kaiserslautern Technische Universität Kaiserslautern The University of Kaiserslautern, founded in 1970, is a relatively new research-oriented German university with a scientific-technological profile. It has a beautiful mid-size campus located on the edge of the world-famous UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest ( Pfälzer Wald ). Currently there are 1.126 employees, 167 professors and 600 academic staff working at the university. The university consists of 12 faculties offering 85 study programmes to 14.000 students. The faculties are: Architecture Civil Engineering Biology Chemistry Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Computer Science Mechanical and Process Engineering Mathematics Physics Spatial and Environmental Planning Social Sciences Economics Besides the different faculty buildings and the research institutes you will find the main library, the computer centre, the Mensa, university sports and other services on the campus. Please use the campus map for basic orientation: Building 1 A/RU: The faculty building for all Architecture and Spatial & Environmental Planning students, including all lecture rooms, offices and workplaces. Building 2 The faculty library for all Architecture, RU and Civil Engineering students: You can find books, magazines and reference shelves, which hold ring binders of the seminars and lectures taught in the current semester. Building 3: Erasmus office of the faculty in room 3/124, offices of RU staff. Building 12 IntClub: The Club for international (and German students) organizes various events during the year. You can find it in the basement in room 168. Building 27 and 28 University Sports: You will find various kinds of sports facilities here. Building 32 Central Library: All the basic literature for your studies is located here. In addition to this, you can get further literature in the various faculty libraries. Building 34 RHRK: The RHRK is the University Computer Centre. You can get your internet account and access to the main computer pool there. 4

Building 46 ASTA: ASTA, the student council, is located near the upper entrance of the building. This institution organizes a lot of events for students and can often help with problems. Building 47 Main Office: This building contains the main administration offices of the University of Kaiserslautern the president of the university, the central administration, the international office and various operational facilities. General Information Library The library for Spatial and Environmental Planning is located in building 2 (next to building 1). Opening hours: Mo.-Fri. 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. You can make use of it with your student card free of charge. Only in case of delay in returning books, you have to pay a fee. For further information: http://www.ub.uni-kl.de/bereichsbibliotheken/arubibib/. You may also use the central library (building 32) or the other faculty libraries. Workplaces for Students Workplaces for students can be found in the libraries all over the Campus. WLan-Access/Print/Plot/Copy You should bring your own computer/notebook with you to use at home as well as at university. To get access to the internet by w-lan, the copy machines, the printers and to some computer programmes you need an RHRK ( Regionales Hochschulrechenzentrum ) account which you get at the RHRK office (Service point, building 34, room 209) Monday to Friday 1-3 p.m. A special printing centre can be found in building 1, room 115. With your account and your student card you are able to print and copy in color DIN A4 and A3 in building 1-115 as well as up to DIN A0 in the computer center with online access. If you want to go to the main campus the bus line 115 is the one to choose. Bus stops can be found at various points on the campus. Map of Building 1 A/RU Building 1 (Pfaffenbergstraße 95) contains the Faculty of Architecture (A) and Urban and Environmental Planning (RU). Building 1 is located to the north-east of the main campus and can be reached by a short-cut (footpath) from the main campus. 7

Organization of the Exchange Programme All exchange programmes are coordinated by the international office of our university, located in building 47, room 626. They also organize German language courses. There will be an intensive German language course before the beginning of each semester. Please use this opportunity to improve your German to be prepared for the semester. (Link to the German language courses: http://www.uni-kl.de/index.php?id=3472) Most courses at the Faculty of Spatial and Environmental Planning are held in German. In some of the classes however, you can get an supervision. Please contact them when you have questions concerning your studies, learning agreement, credit points, transcript of records etc. They will also assist you in the contact and communication with the University of Kaiserslautern and your home university. The AG Auslandskontakte (see contact information) is a group of students that helps international students with the enrolment at our university, residential arrangements and all other organizational problems. They will contact you when you are accepted as an exchange student in Spatial and Environmental Planning at the University of Kaiserslautern and will help you with all organizational questions. The Fachschaft RU - the student council of the faculty - an elected group of students, who look after the interests of all students in our faculty, is located in room 1-U063 in the Foyer. Study Programmes at the Faculty of Spatial and Environmental Planning The Faculty of Spatial and Environmental Planning offers two Bachelor programmes and three Master programmes: Bachelor in Spatial Planning Bachelor in Geography (teaching post) Master in Urban and Regional Development Master in Environmental Planning and Law Master in Geography (teaching post) You are free to choose from all courses offered by the faculty of Spatial and Environmental Planning as well as the other faculties according to your needs and interests. Please note that not every course will be offered in every semester. There are different kinds of courses offered at the faculty. The most important ones are lectures (V), exercises (Ü) and integrated courses that contain both, lectures and exercises (V+Ü). Additionally there are seminars. Feel free to choose lectures held in German if your German and respective background knowledge is good enough and if you think you can follow the lectures without problems. There are also lectures held or supervised in. You need to take into account that the courses with supervision contain inputs and lectures in German language that you need to understand. Before being enrolled in the courses you need the agreement of the lecturer to supervise you in. The following schedule will give you an overview about the offered courses. Course Selection and Learning Agreement You ll find information concerning the courses and the professors on our website. The university s information system KIS contains all information about current courses of the semester. Please, inform yourself here in advance. The information system KIS and the register of courses offered at the University of Kaiserslautern can be found at: http://www.kis.uni-kl.de Course of action First of all the respective semester needs to be chosen (on the left side). WS stands for winter semester; SS for summer semester. (Example: "WS 2014/2015"). To find the courses of the faculty you need to choose the faculty "Raum- und Umweltplanung". Now you can find all available courses sorted by the different level (Bachelor/Master/Diplom), the respective programmes and the respective year or semester of studies. When you choose a course you can access more information concerning dates, place, ECTS points, responsible lecturers etc. If the register of courses is not yet available for the coming semester you can orientate yourself on the previous winter respectively summer semester. Normally there are only small differences between the previous and the coming winter term respectively the previous and coming summer term. ERASMUS-Welcome-Meeting One week before the lectures start an ERASMUS-Welcome-Meeting will be held at the faculty. You will be provided with more information about studying at the faculty and your Learning Agreement will be discussed and can be adjusted. It is very important that you participate in this meeting. The next ERASMUS-Welcome-Meeting for the winter semester will take place on Thursday, 23th October, 2014 at 10 am in building 3, room 122. Please feel free to contact local students, who should be helpful in sharing information concerning quality, amount of input and grading of various fields of study. At the beginning of a course you usually get an overview of what is going to happen during the course as well as what you need to do in order to receive the performance record. It is your own responsibility to coordinate various fields of study and lectures. Immediately after your study plan is fixed, the learning agreement should be sent to your home university, to make sure that the chosen courses are accepted. 12
