Turnitin Assignments Turnitin is a tool available via MyUni that performs plagiarism checks on assignments submitted by students. All work submitted to Turnitin is checked against three databases of content: Student paper repository - every student paper ever submitted to Turnitin Current and archived internet Periodicals, journals and publications In addition to providing staff and students with a plagiarism check for assignments, Turnitin also allows you to grade assignments inline, add rubrics, and create PeerMark assignments (students marking their peers assignments). When creating a Turnitin Assignment, a column is automatically added to the Grade Centre. Turnitin assignments should be marked via the Turnitin tool (Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments). The Turnitin Grade will automatically be added to the Grade Centre. When you wish to amend or grade Turnitin assignments and rubrics, you will need to access the Turnitin tool via Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments. Create Turnitin assignment 1. Navigate to the content area where you would like to place a link to the Assignment. 2. Select Create Assessment > Turnitin Assignment. 3. If the user agreement is displayed, read it and click I agree continue to add a Turnitin Assignment. 4. Choose the assignment type from the three available options: Paper Assignment (the default assignment type), PeerMark or Revision. 2 30 April 2015 The University of Adelaide

Note: Creating a Revision Assignment will allow students to submit multiple attempts without overwriting. If you just want to allow resubmissions, then set the Originality Report option to immediately (can overwrite reports until due date) in the Optional settings. 5. In the New Assignment section, enter Assignment Title, Point value, Start date, Due date and Post date of the assignment. Start date date the students will be able to start submitting the assignment Due date date the student assignments are due Post date date the students will be able to view grades and comments 6. Click to expand the options. Adjust other options as required. Optional settings Enter special instructions Instructions for students about the assignment. Allow submissions after the due date? Select Yes to allow submission after the due date. Select No to prevent submissions after the due date. Generate Originality Reports for submissions? Select Yes to check for plagiarism. Select No to not check for plagiarism. Generate Originality Reports for student submissions 1. The immediately first report is final option generates the Originality Report immediately when a student submits an assignment. When this option is selected, students will not be able to resubmit the assignment. 2. To allow resubmissions, select the immediately (can overwrite reports until due date) option. It may take up to 24 hours to process Originality Reports for resubmissions. 3. The 'on due date' option will only generate an Originality Report on the due date. This setting allows all papers submitted to be compared against each other when the Originality Reports are created. Exclude bibliographic materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? This setting allows you to exclude text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, or references of papers from the Originality Report. The University of Adelaide 30 April 2015 3

Optional settings Exclude quoted materials from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? This setting allows you to exclude text appearing in quotes from the Originality Report. Exclude small matches? This setting allows you to determine whether you want to exclude small matches. You can decide either the word count or percentage of matching text to be excluded from the Originality Report. Submit papers to: 1. Standard paper repository select this option if you want submitted papers to be stored in the Turnitin student paper repository. Submitted papers will be checked against other students submissions. 2. No repository select this option if the papers are not to be stored in the Turnitin student paper repository. Search options: Decide which Turnitin repositories the papers will be checked against for the Originality Report. GradeMark Select an already created rubric or create a rubric. A Turnitin rubric can be created, imported and exported via the Turnitin Rubric Manager. 7. Click Submit. View Originality Report and grade a Turnitin Assignment When you wish to amend or grade Turnitin assignments or rubrics, you will need to access the Turnitin tool via Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments. The Turnitin QuickMark, comment and rubric tools assist in making online grading easy. You can also access the Originality Report (plagiarism check). 1. From the Control Panel, in the Course Tools section, select Turnitin Assignments. 2. Select an assignment. 3. In the Turnitin Assignment Inbox, select Roster Sync to view all students, even those who have not submitted an assignment yet. 4. Select the assignment title you wish to grade. 5. Originality Report The Originality Report allows you to check for plagiarism in student papers. The report shows you where in the text in the paper matches other sources. 1. If necessary, select the Originality button in the top left corner of the screen. 2. Select the View sources button in the bottom right corner of the screen to view the sources of potential plagiarism. 3. Select the View/edit filters and settings button in the bottom right corner of the screen to edit filters and settings for the Originality Report. 4. View the similarity percentage at the top right corner of the screen. GradeMark Using the Turnitin GradeMark function allows you to add text, voice and template comments to papers and mark using a rubric. You can also use the Turnitin ipad app to mark on- or offline using an ipad. 1. If necessary, select the GradeMark button in the top left corner of the screen. 2. Select the QuickMark button in the bottom right corner of the screen to drag comment templates onto the paper, insert your own comment or add text to the paper. 3. Select the Rubric button in the bottom right corner of the screen to grade using the rubric (if added). 4. Select the General comments button in the bottom right corner of the screen to add overall voice or text comments to the paper. 5. Either apply the rubric percentage to the grade or enter a grade in the field in the top right hand corner. 6. Grades and comments are automatically saved to the paper when you close the paper window. Use QuickMark Comments QuickMark Comments can be used to quickly mark an assignment by dragging-anddropping the pre-set comments onto the assignment page. You can also create your own comments and comment sets. 1. Make sure the QuickMark button is selected. 2. Click and drag the desired comment onto the assignment page. Use the Change QuickMark Set icon to switch between comment sets. 3. Add a free comment by clicking on the Comment button at the top of the page and entering the desired comment. If you wish to add a comment to a section of text, click and drag on the text to highlight it before you click the button. 4. To add a strike-through, click and drag to highlight the text and then press the Backspace key on your keyboard. 5. To add a text comment, click on the Text Comment icon in the top right-hand corner and then click on the assignment page where you want the comment to appear. Create and save a new comment 1. Click the Comment button. 2. Enter your comment in the text box. 3. Click the Save as new QuickMark link. 4. Give your comment a title. 5. Click on the drop-down arrow to select a QuickMark set. 6. Create a rubric Creating a rubric in Turnitin can be done when creating a Turnitin Assignment. In the Optional Settings section under GradeMark either, select Create a rubric or Launch Rubric/Form Manager to access existing Turnitin Rubrics or to upload/download your Turnitin Rubrics. Add rubrics via the Optional Settings when creating a Turnitin Assignment Alternatively, Turnitin Rubrics can be added, uploaded or downloaded via the MyUni Course tools, Turnitin Assignments link once a Turnitin Assignment has been created. 7. From the Control Panel, in the Course Tools section, select Turnitin Assignments. 8. Select an assignment. 9. Select the Libraries tab. 10. In the Libraries section, select Rubric/Form Manager 11. Click the View import/export options button if you want to import or export a Turnitin Rubrics. 12. Click the View available rubrics and rubrics options button. 13. Select Create new rubric. 14. Enter a name for your rubric. 15. Add or delete Criteria (rows) required. 16. Add a description for each criteria by clicking in the Criterion field. 17. Add the Scales (columns) or level of achievement for example Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction. 18. Select the Rubric Scoring to use, from the bottom left of the screen: -Standard rubric: enter scale values for each column and weight your criteria rows using percentages cell. - Custom rubric: enter each value directly into each rubric -Qualitative rubric: a rubric that provides standard feedback but has no numeric scoring The University of Adelaide 30 April 2015 9

19. Click Save in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Note: Once a rubric has been used for grading, it cannot be edited. Duplicate the rubric in order to create a duplicate rubric that can be edited. Add a rubric to an assessment item 1. From the Control Panel, in the Course Tools section, select Turnitin Assignments. 2. Select an assignment. 3. Select the Edit assignment tab. 4. Select Optional settings. 5. Scroll down to the GradeMark section and select the required rubric from the drop-down menu. 6. Click Submit. Mark an assignment using a rubric 1. From the Control Panel, in the Course Tools section, select Turnitin Assignments. 2. Select an assignment. 3. Select the assignment title you wish to grade. 4. 5. Select the Rubric button in the bottom right corner of the screen to grade using the rubric: 6. Click the required scale for each criterion. 7. Click Apply rubric percentage to grade button. The rubric percentage can be overwritten by manually entering a grade in the grade field in the top right hand corner of the assignment. The University of Adelaide 30 April 2015 11

Turnitin ipad app Turnitin for ipad allows instructors to grade student papers with all the Turnitin features, on your ipad with the added benefit of grading offline. Turnitin for ipad includes automated originality feedback and allows you to leave the following types of feedback on assignments: QuickMark comments with personalized comments Highlights with comments Bubble comments Inline comments Strikethrough text Voice comments General comments Rubric grading Get the app Turnitin for ipad is available as a free download in the Apple Store. Once downloaded to your ipad, tap on the Turnitin icon to open the app. As the University is using Turnitin via MyUni you will need a class access code. Obtaining the ipad Class Access Code 8. From within your MyUni course, go to Control Panel > Course Tools > Turnitin Assignments. Click on the assignment that you wish to mark and then click on the title of a student s submission to open it. 12 30 April 2015 The University of Adelaide

9. Click the Class Access Code button at the bottom left-hand corner of the Turnitin GradeMark screen and then click the Generate code button. 10. Copy or write down the code for later use in the ipad app. Setting up the ipad app 11. Download the app. 12. Tap on the app to open. 13. Under Which Turnitin service do you use? select Turnitin. 14. Under How do you usually access Turnitin? select Integrated LMS. The University of Adelaide 30 April 2015 13

15. Click Continue. 16. Enter the Class Access Code and tap Add. 17. If using the app for the first time, set and confirm a four-digit passcode. 18. Under Accounts, select the University of Adelaide account. 19. Select the required course (class). 20. Select the required assignment. 21. Tap the cloud icon next to a user s name to download that submission for marking. 22. Tap on the pencil icon to begin marking. Marking using the ipad app 1. Tap on an area of the text where you want the comment to appear. 2. Choose an option (QuickMark, bubble comment or text) from the pop-up menu. 3. Tap, hold and drag to select an area of text. Tap on the strikethrough icon to add a highlight or strikethrough. 4. Tap the pencil icon in the top right hand corner of the screen to access Grade Overview. From this page you can edit a grade, open an associated rubric or add text and voice comments.
