Bowling Green State University SPIE Student Chapter Bowling Green State University Center for Photochemical Sciences 132 Overman Hall Bowling Green Ohio 43403 First Chapter Report: Introduction and list of members The student chapter for Bowling Green State University was originally created in November 2005. A first meeting was held and the purposes of SPIE were explained to a group of students from the Center for Photochemical Sciences by a member of SPIE. The idea to create a chapter in our University in our center was brought to us by Dr. Eugene Arthurs, member of the Scientific Advisory Board of our Center. That day of November 2005, four students were elected to hold and start all the process necessary to obtain certification and approval as student organization from our University. Later, we applied for regular status from the SPIE organization. Those students elected were: Victor Montes, President Cesar Perez Bolivar, Vice-President Rajib Mondal, Treasurer Ravi Adhikari, Secretary We counted on the advices and guidance of two SPIE members, an alumnus from our University, Brigitte Wex, Ph.D.; and our Faculty advisor, Dr. Evgeny Danilov. By December 2005, we applied for regular status as student organization in the university, being granted that category by January 2006. As a student organization, we were able to apply for funds from our university, which became the purpose of our first meeting, and to plan activities to create a budget to be shown in front of the Student Budget Committee. By February 2006, we were approved a budget, which will be detailed in another section of this report.
Since the first officers had a temporary character, new officers were elected after approval as student chapter in front of SPIE (April 2006). The current officers gained their status after an election held on July 5, 2006. The list is as follow: Victor Montes, vmontesm@gmail.com, President Cesar Perez Bolivar, cesarp@bgnet.bgsu.edu, Vice-President Rajib Mondal, rmondal@bgnet.bgsu.edu, Treasurer Ying Hu (Hannah), hying@bgnet.bgsu.edu, Secretary The current members registered in SPIE are the following: 1. Mr. Ravi Adhikari Dec-31-2006 2. Mr. Leandro Estrada Jan-31-2007 3. Ms. Ying Hu Dec-31-2006 4. Mr. Dmitry Komarov Dec-31-2006 5. Miss Thilini Kuruwita-Mudiyanselage Jan-31-2007 6. Mr. Rajib Mondal Dec-31-2006 7. Mr. Victor Montes Jan-31-2007 8. Ms. Maria Muro Jan-31-2007 9. Mr. Manuel Palacios Jan-31-2007 10. Mr. Sujeewa Palayangoda Jan-31-2007 11. Mr. Cesar Perez-Bolivar
Jan-31-2007 However, we currently have more students not only from our Photochemical Sciences Center, but from other departments such as physics. We hope to have them as SPIE members in a close future. Their names and e-mail addresses are the following: Shantanu Karve, karves@bgsu.edu Elena Shikhova, selena@bgsu.edu Fei Hua, fhua@bgsu.edu Radiy Islangulov, rislan@bgsu.edu Mithun Bhowmick, mithunb@bgsu.edu Jagannath Paul, pauljag@bgsu.edu Fei Xie, fxie@bgsu.edu Jiufeng Fan, fanj@bgsu.edu Xianchun Zhu, zhux@bgsu.edu Jing Hong, jhong@bgsu.edu Chapters Activities Since we were a recently approved chapter by the moment of the semiannual report due in June, we did not submit any at that time. However, by that moment we already have had our first activity. Every year, in Bowling Green State University, the departments of chemistry, physics and biological sciences, get together to hold a Science Fair. In this fair, called Sci-Fest, high-school students are invited to come to campus and get the opportunity of observing several scientific demonstrations. For the SciFest 2006, we counted on some members, to first hold a demonstration or the high-school students, and other group of members, who helped to escort the student s groups to go to the different locations on campus for each presentation. The topic of the presentation held by our group was Optics and Materials. For this presentation we had four topics:
Optic fibers and how they work Organic light emitting diodes Photolithography Up-power conversion using a mix of compounds Please find attached some pictures from this first successful activity, also available in our website http://www.bgsu.edu/departments/photochem/spie/sci%20fest/photo.htm Cesar is demonstrating the principle of fiber optics
Cesar is demonstrating the principle of fiber optics and Rajib is helping him Radiy is explaining photo-upconversion
Rajib is demonstrating the principle of stereolithography Victor is demonstrating the future of OLEDs

In our third meeting of the year, July 2006, the current officers were elected; the names were already given in a previous section. In July we also started planning for campus fest, a large event that takes place year to year in the university, in which besides the free food offered by the President s office, all the student organizations set up different stands and the new students get the chance to get involved with them. For this event the chapter showed a stand, which contained information about SPIE and our organization. We used for this purpose all the publicity material that we received from SPIE (sent by Pascale Barnett). We gave away pens, bottle of water and pencils (donated by the Center for Photochemical Sciences). Please find attached some pictures from this event. SPIE BGSU student chapter s stand.

Victor Montes, Dr. Eugeny Danilov, Maria Luisa Muro, Cesar Perez Bolivar In August 2006, our secretary Hannah Ying attended SPIE 2006 O&P. For her attendance to the conference she was awarded with a travel grant for $1000. She showed a presentation of her experience to our chapter in September 2006. For the moment when you probably would have received this report, the chapter would have given away some P.O.P. material and contributed to the Department of Chemistry s Luncheon. Every year, our Department offers a lunch for Faculty, Staffs and Students. We thought that one of the best opportunities to reach out for the most of our community would be this occasion. For this event, we planned to contribute with some deserts, and have some visual material as give a small talk inviting new students to join our chapter. Future Plans For the upcoming year we have already planned several activities, one of them is the use of the Visitor Lecturer Program. For this activity, we are going to start contacting three candidates, and ask them for available dates. As soon as any of the candidates answer to us, and his availability can allow us, we will organize the event. For this activity, we are wide open to available dates from the speaker, since we planned to be in any moment during spring of 2007.
The proposed candidates for this visit were selected from SPIE web site and later debate among the organizers, and the list came down to the following possible candidates (no particular importance related to the order in the list): Dr. Paul McManamon H. Johm Caulfield Prof. Ian M. Kennedy We hope to establish communication with them, and after checking availability set up for a date. For this visit, we count on logistic help from the Center for Photochemical Sciences and the Department of Chemistry, since both entities can help us to get rooms in our Campus, as serve to advertise the event and reach for more public. The next activity planned for next year is a visit to an industry related to our studies field, such as solar cell industries. In this matter we count on the help provided by Dr. Douglas Necker, for his advice and contact with different industries around our campus. For this activity, we are planning to go on a field trip and arrange a tour through the installations. The funds for this activity are requested in our Funding request for 2007. We plan on participate in the Sci-fest in spring of 2007 and in the On-campus festival for fall 2007.
