Cmmunity Based Educatin Cperative Educatin Prgram Cperative Educatin is a credit granting, planned learning experience that integrates classrm thery with practical experience in the wrkplace. The placement is directly related t the subject t which it is linked and enables the student t apply and refine the knwledge and skills acquired in a related curriculum curse. Students earn credits when curse expectatins are met. Cperative Educatin curses can be linked t any Grade 11 r 12 curse that the student has already passed r will be taking cncurrently with Cp. Entry int Cperative Educatin prgrams is based upn the student having the necessary educatinal backgrund and maturity t handle the rigr f the curriculum. Tw, three, and fur credit ptins are available. Students participating in OYAP must have cmpleted sixteen credits twards their OSSD prir t starting the prgram. They must be enrlled as full time students and they are required t cmplete all cmpulsry credits required fr the OSSD. Students earn credits and receive their training thrugh the Cperative Educatin prgram. Interviews will be arranged by the Cmmunity Educatin Department in April/May. Where a student s readiness r cmmitment is nt sufficiently evident, his r her acceptance int the cperative educatin prgram may be pstpned until the requirements are met. 3. Alternate Educatin The Alternative Educatin Prgram is designed fr students wh are cmmitted t academic study and develping wrkplace skills, and are nt achieving maximum success in the traditinal high schl learning envirnment. The prgram cmbines in-schl curses with the academic and experiential requirements f wrkplace learning in rder that bth junir and senir secndary credits may be earned fr graduatin purpses. Students are referred t the Alternative Educatin Prgram by Administratrs and/r Guidance Cunsellrs. A structured interview with students and/r parents will be held t discuss suitability, student needs, and prgram ptins. Library Infrmatin Centre The Library Infrmatin Centre at Emily Carr Secndary Schl has a rich cllectin f resurces t help students with their studies in all subject areas. During the schl day, classes visit the library fr resurce-based learning experiences, created and facilitated by bth the classrm teacher and the teacher-librarian. The Library helps students t develp strng research skills that they will need fr academic advancement in the 21st century, t becme life-lng learners and the library prgramme actively fsters the jy f reading. Special Educatin The Special Educatin Department ffers several prgrams and services fr students wh have been identified with special needs thrugh the Identificatin, Placement and Review Cmmittee (I.P.R.C.) prcess. Sme key services include: Special needs prgram fr the develpmentally disabled; Learning strategies curses; Individual mnitring f student prgress; Resurce teacher assistance; and Language Intensive Prgram The gal f the department is t encurage each student t becme an independent learner with a psitive selfimage. On-ging cnsultatin and cmmunicatin is maintained with the student, the classrm teachers, parents and supprt persnnel. We invite yu t cntact the Special Educatin department if yu have any questins. English as a Secnd Language Students frm varius linguistic and cultural backgrunds may need special prgrams t help them develp the level f prficiency in English required fr success at schl. Curses in English as a Secnd Language (ESL) assist students t learn the English language and t develp their literacy skills. Students new t the Yrk Regin District Schl Bard wh require this curse, will be directed t the Newcmer Receptin Centre fr assessment and cnsultatin. The Ministry f Educatin has intrduced the fllwing diplma requirement changes pertaining t ESL curses (effective September 2007): Students may cntinue t cunt a maximum f three credits in English as a secnd language (ESL) twards the fur cmpulsry credits in English, but must nw earn the furth cmpulsry credit in English at the Grade 12 level instead f having the chice f earning it at either the Grade 11 r the Grade 12 level. (Students graduating in the 2007 08 schl year are exempt frm this requirement.) The curses that meet the cmpulsry credit requirement in Grade 12 are ENG4U, ENG4C, ENG4E, and OLC4O1. Page 4 f 12
