Introduction to the Revised Mathematics TEKS (2012) Module 1 This is the first of four modules to introduce the Revised TEKS for grades K 8. The goals for participation are to become familiar with the focal points and the TEKS comparison documents, to examine how to use the documents to improve overall mathematics instruction, and to explore vertical alignment of mathematical concepts and processes within the Revised TEKS (2012). CPE credit is 3. Course Introduction This lesson presents a brief overview and organizational framework of the course. 01 How do You Look at Things? As you explore the Revised Math TEKS (2012), you will at times look at the big picture, forest- level view, zoom in a bit to see the trees, or zoom in even further to take a leaf- level look. (Estimated time: 35 min.) 02 The TxRCFP Review the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points, Revised 2013 (TxRCFP Revised 2013) on the Project Share Gateway. 03 The TxRCFP Scavenger Hunt Complete a scavenger hunt using the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points Highlights document and the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points in order to do a quick survey of the documents. (Estimated time: 15 min.) 04 Process Standards Study the process standards and complete an activity by summarizing each process standard with a short phrase. 05 A Vertical Look at the Focal Points (grade band specifics) Explore the focal points and complete an activity by arranging them in progression across the grade levels. 06 Journal Entry Use the Vertical Look document to review the chart created in the previous lesson section. 07 Zooming In Study the highlights page and Vertical Look document. Record your observations on what the document tells you and does not tell you in the appropriate section of your journal. 08s Where are the Connections? (grade 6-8 only) Learn about consecutive vs. nonconsecutive connections and how they apply to grade six through grade eight. 08 Taking A Closer Look: Key Concepts and Procedures (grade band specifics) Explore key concepts and procedures according to your grade band.

09 Taking a Closer Look at Focal Points (grade band specifics) Review the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points, Revised 2013 (TxRCFP Revised 2013) on the Project Share Gateway and record your notes about the development of the identified key concepts and procedures in your journal. 10 Discussion Question (grade band specifics) Learn about the role that the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points and the Vertical Look documents play in strengthening knowledge of the mathematics concepts and processes according to grade band. 11 Perks and Pitfalls of the Vertical Look Document Consider the Vertical Look chart and think about any perks and pitfalls of using the document. 12 Strands vs. Focal Points Learn about different ways that student expectations are organized. 13 Using the Focal Points to Build Depth and Complexity Learn about how focal points build depth and complexity and explore various resources for more information on the Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points. 14 Using the Focal Points to Amplify Instructional Tasks (grade band specifics) Consider a process to amplify instructional tasks. Look at a grade band specific task, explore a process that could be used to amplify this task, and examine an example of an amplified task. 15 What should we Consider when Amplifying Tasks? Explore a process you can use to amplify a given task and provide opportunities to make multiple connections. 16 Consider the Revised TEKS in the Original Task Identify main skills and related skills involved in the original task. 17 Consider the Curriculum Focal Point Explore other mathematical ideas, given additional information. 18 Consider the Context Consider context, related ideas, and cross- curricular connections in relation to the task. 19 Consider the Student Learn what Tier I differentiation may be needed to reach a struggling student, an English language learner, and/or an advanced student.

20 Amplifying Instructional Tasks Study the Amplifying Instructional Tasks journal page and the Amplifying Instructional Tasks handouts to see how the related student expectations and ideas were used. (Estimated time: 20 min.) 21 What was our Process? Review the process. 22 How did we Use the Focal Points to Build Depth and Complexity? Review how the focal points serve to guide your thinking in identifying possible related ideas that could be explored in an amplified problem. 23 A Side- by- Side TEKS Comparison Review the Side- by- Side TEKS Comparison Highlights and documents to answer questions in your journal. 24 Personal Financial Literacy Take a look at the new personal financial literacy standards. 25 Zooming in Further (grade band specifics) Study the strands from the current TEKS for content that remains or is clarified, new, or deleted and learn about using the Forums. (Estimated time: 40 min.) 26 Pulling it All Together Reflect on how the Focal Points, Vertical Look documents, and Side- by- Side TEKS Comparison are related. 27 Goodbye and Send off In this lesson, you will finalize and share your journal. You will also review videos to prepare for completing the course quiz. The course quiz is available from the Epsilen course menu located on the left- hand side of the browser window. Helpful Tips The following are tips to help you navigate this online course: Access the "Materials for Download" section for transcripts, documents, references, and other resources. Download the latest version of Adobe Reader to use the interactive journal PDF documents. For videos, use the controller bar to play, pause, fast- forward or rewind, and adjust video volume. Click the full screen button to increase the video size and click it again to return to normal video size. Click the "Previous" or "Next" buttons to move from one section of the course to another. Interactive activities in this course work best in Firefox, Chrome or Safari browsers. If you are using Internet Explorer, you may use the Print Screen feature to capture your work in lieu of the Print button in the interactive activity.
