MetroHealth Giving Advancing the excellence and charitable mission of MetroHealth November Family Makes $1.5 Million Gift to MetroHealth Summer 2012 Improved access to outstanding care close to home will soon be a reality for residents of southern Cuyahoga County, thanks to eastside philanthropists Linda, Larry, Mort and Iris November. In honor of the family s $1.5 million donation, MetroHealth s newest site will be named the MetroHealth Middleburg Heights November Family Health Center. The gift which is the largest philanthropic commitment from the November family was announced at The MetroHealth Foundation s Annual Meeting on May 24. It also happened to be Iris November s birthday. That evening, she addressed the crowd saying, Most people get a cake for their birthday. I got a health center, and I couldn t be more thrilled! The Novembers have long known MetroHealth as a health system that provides outstanding care to children, the elderly and everyone in between. Mort and Iris November made their first gift to MetroHealth in 2010 a piece of public art called Grow Love, which was designed by Hector Vega and dedicated in memory of Mort s daughter, Debra Ann November. Historically, the couple has supported philanthropic causes for children in honor of Debra Ann, who died at age 24. As life-long Clevelanders, we believe in the mission of MetroHealth a challenging mission to deliver exceptional care to all which has not wavered over the past 175 years, said Mort November. Iris and I consider this gift an endorsement of MetroHealth s growth and are proud to support their extension of health services to more suburbs and more residents of Cuyahoga County. For example, Lincoln Financial made a generous gift to support the Health Center in recognition of Mort and Larry s career and philanthropic achievements. MetroHealth Foundation Board of Directors Makes $1.3 Million+ Donation MetroHealth Foundation Welcomes New Chair Some members of The MetroHealth Foundation Board of Directors gathered for a photo at the Annual Meeting. The MetroHealth Foundation s Board of Directors had an exciting announcement of their own at the Annual Meeting in May an unprecedented gift of more than $1.3 million. The Board s generous gift, which is the largest board gift in the history of The MetroHealth Foundation, will help MetroHealth continue to provide high-quality care that is accessible to all. Our board believes in MetroHealth and is proud of its legacy of caring for Greater Cleveland. We felt that our 175th anniversary year was the time to make a difference. This commitment will position MetroHealth to serve our community for many years to come, said Rob Durham, outgoing Chair of The MetroHealth Foundation. To achieve this unparalleled donation, board members contributed to support the purchase of new life insurance policies, naming The MetroHealth Foundation as the owner and beneficiary. With this savvy gift, donors may receive a charitable tax deduction; additionally, since the benefit amount can far exceed the premiums paid, it enables donors to substantially increase the impact of their giving. In this case, it results in an even brighter future for MetroHealth. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he earned his bachelor s degree in finance and marketing. Metro Life Flight Celebrates 30 Years of Life-Saving Care As MetroHealth continues its celebration of 175 years of caring for the community, we have something else to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Metro Life Flight! Back in 1982, Metro Life Flight was the first air medical program in the area. Over the years, the program has experienced many changes, but it has remained committed to providing the best critical care to those in need. Each Metro Life Flight mission is completed with two pilots, both instrumented-rated, to maximize safety and enhance the ability to fly in difficult weather conditions. Furthermore, our advanced medical crew consists of flight nurses, advanced certified nurse practitioners and physicians. Since its inception, Metro Life Flight has provided more than 70,000 accident-free missions. With three helicopters based in surrounding communities, a critical care ground unit based at MetroHealth and the support of The MetroHealth System, Metro Life Flight looks forward to serving the community for many more years. West-Kovach Endowment Honors Long-time Critical Care Employees Barbara West, RN, and Betty Kovach, RN, two long-time MetroHealth employees who devoted their careers to outstanding critical care, recently retired. Barb worked at MetroHealth for more than 30 years and was most recently the Administrative Director of the Emergency Care Patient Care Unit. Betty was involved with Metro Life Flight for more than 25 years and was most recently its Program Director. The West-Kovach Endowment Fund was established as a tribute to Barb and Betty. To date, more than $12,000 has been contributed by MetroHealth employees and corporate donors. The fund, meant to serve as a lasting legacy to Barb and Betty s remarkable service, was revealed to them at their retirement party in June. Donations to this fund will positively impact Metro Life Flight and the Emergency Medicine Department at MetroHealth. New Endowment to Honor Dr. Rosenbaum David S. Rosenbaum, MD, was an internationally recognized cardiologist, scientist and thought leader. He came to MetroHealth in 1999 and later established the Heart & Vascular Center, where he served as its Director until his untimely passing this past May. Dr. Rosenbaum dedicated himself to training the next generation of physician scientists and improving the knowledge of the mechanisms of heart disease. He was passionate about developing tools to predict and prevent sudden cardiac death. Dr. Rosenbaum had numerous leadership roles, including serving as president of the American Heart Association s Cleveland Chapter. His many accomplishments made him a fitting recipient of the inaugural Louis Rakita, MD, and Maurice Moss, MD, Professorship in Cardiology. A campaign has begun to raise the $1.5 million needed to create an endowed professorship in Dr. Rosenbaum s name. The David S. Rosenbaum, MD, Endowment will support recruitment, research and education in MetroHealth s Heart & Vascular Center. Under Dr. Rosenbaum s leadership, MetroHealth s Heart & Vascular Center became a national leader in treating heart disease, said William Lewis, MD, Chief of Clinical Cardiology. He inspired the faculty, residents and students to outstanding accomplishments. This professorship will not only provide important funding to the Heart & Vascular Center, it will also allow Dr. Rosenbaum s legacy to continue to inspire academic and clinical excellence in the field of Cardiology. Walking in Memory MetroHealth employees and patients walked in memory of Dr. Rosenbaum at the American Heart Association s (AHA) 2012 Heart Walk on Saturday, August 25. Each year, the AHA provides MetroHealth with more than $600,000 for cardiac research. She collapsed during her daily jog when an irregular heartbeat caused her heart to stop. Metro Life Flight rushed her to MetroHealth, where cardiologists who specialize in heart rhythm disorders implanted a defibrillator to re-start her heart should it ever stop again. Participants enjoyed food, music and children s activities at the event, which took place at Hyland Software s corporate headquarters in Westlake. Awards were given to the top finishers in each age bracket. In honor of MetroHealth s 175th anniversary, a special prize was given to the 175th runner to cross the finish line. Lisa Perez (far right) shared her comeback story, and participants joined her husband and children in singing happy birthday to MetroHealth to help kick off the race.

New Professorship in Surgery Honors Drs. Brandt and Fratianne At a special celebration ceremony, Christopher P. Brandt, MD, Chair of MetroHealth s Department of Surgery, was announced as the inaugural holder of the newly established Richard B. Fratianne, MD, Professorship in Surgery. Friends, family members and colleagues of both physicians looked on with pride, sharing smiles and tears of joy, as Drs. Brandt and Fratianne delivered heartfelt remarks and took a seat in their chairs. More than 75 donors made gifts to The MetroHealth Foundation in honor of this professorship. The largest gift to MetroHealth, from the estate of Colonel Thomas C. McNeal, helped reach the $1.5 million needed to establish the professorship at Case Western Reserve University. A specialist in burn and general surgery, Dr. Brandt is a national leader in the education of surgeons. He has dedicated his career to the care of patients injured with severe burns. Dr. Brandt will use the support of this professorship to enhance research and education in the care of burned and injured patients in Northeast Ohio and to attract and retain high-caliber burn and trauma surgeons, said Alfred F. It honors Dr. Fratianne s legacy of healing the bodies, minds and spirits of patients suffering from burns and trauma. Dr. Fratianne is Director Emeritus of the Comprehensive Burn Care Center at MetroHealth and Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Fratianne founded MetroHealth s nationally recognized burn center in 1970 and revolutionized burn treatment with a holistic approach. He is also founder of the hospital s Level I Trauma Center and served as the first Medical Director of Metro Life Flight, which is celebrating 30 years of life-saving care this year (see p. 4). Upon accepting this honor, Dr. Brandt said, I can think of no greater privilege than to serve as the inaugural Richard B. Fratianne, MD, Professor of Surgery and to honor a man I consider a role model, mentor, teacher and friend. Richard B. Fratianne, MD, and Christopher P.
