MECH4500/01 (Quota on enrolments) A Thesis is an individual inquiry It is an Engineering Project Goal Deliverable Schedule Access to the student workshop and instrumentation laboratory for construction/instrumentation The School does not provide workshop or budget support for MECH4500/01 but this may be available from your supervisor It is a Quest that takes a year to complete How is a topic for a thesis found? Option 1 Select your thesis from the list of projects offered by academic staff in the School List of projects from academics and researchers in the School (MECH4500/01) https://student.eait.uq.edu.au/projectdb/ Discuss potential projects with the academics (try email to make an appointment) When you and the supervisor agree on the project, inform the School Office to see if there is still a quota place left (enquiries@mechmining.uq.wedu.au). When you get a reply from the office, you can enroll. 3
How is a topic for a thesis found? Option 2 Propose your own topic (MECH4500/01) Prepare a thesis proposal (intro, aims, methodology, expected outcomes) Bring your proposal to academics in the School to see if they are prepared to supervise you on the topic. If you and the supervisor agree on the project, inform the School Office to see if there is still a quota place left (enquiries@mechmining.uq.wedu.au). When you get a reply from the office, you can enroll. If you are not able to find a supervisor, go to Option 1. How is a topic for a thesis found? Option 3 If Options 1 and 2 fail, contact the course coordinator and you will be assigned a supervisor. Contact the supervisor and he/she will assign you a project. Inform the School Office to see if there is still a quota place left (enquiries@mechmining.uq.wedu.au). When you get a reply from the office, you can enroll. 4
How is a topic for a thesis found? CEED (Co-operative Education for Enterprise Development) ENGG4011 or MECH4500/01 Dr Ingo Jahn is the UQ coordinator for 2017 http://www.corptech.com.au/ Register your interest and submit your C.V. on the CEED web site. The CEED Program part of the training is conducted in industry or government. project usually arises from a client's need to undertake R&D or improvement in an area for which it lacks available personnel or resources. CEED provides companies, State and Local Government with a cost-effective alternative method to undertake this work. project must be of sufficient complexity and suitable scope to meet expectations of a final year thesis Project must meet the needs of the corporate agenda. MECH4500/01 Assessment Components Project Execution, 15% Interim Report, 15% Seminar Presentation, (compulsory) Final Report, 70% Reflection on weekly workshops (compulsory) 5
Project Execution Ability to Start the Project Ability to Plan and Manage Ability to Analyse and Interpret Results Quality of Outcomes Seminar Presentation 15 minute timeslot at the annual student conference Assessed by the audience on Abstract Content, interest, and references Depth and Critical Analysis Structure and timing Presentation style Handling questions 6
Interim Report Defines the thesis topic; reviews relevant background material; relates work done in the 1 st semester; presents structure and plan for the 2 nd semester Contents Thesis Title and Abstract An introduction to the topic A clear statement of the goals of the project A critical review of the literature. A short description of the work conducted in the first semester of the project Research Plan for the second semester of the project A draft Table of Contents for the Final Report A complete list of references Final Report The main assessment component in the course. The contents will depend on the Thesis Topic. It is important that both the breadth and the depth of are presented The Final Report will be marked by academic(s) not familiar with your work. Therefore, the Final Report should be selfsufficient and well-presented. 7
MECH4552 Major Design Project Major Design Project Coordinator: A/Prof Carl Reidsema Projects run over the year, usually in small design teams (up to 4 students) Projects start in sem 1 and finish at the end of sem 2 each year. If you are expecting to complete your degree at the end of semester 1, start your project in semester 1 the year before. School provides limited access to workshop (competitive) based on outcomes of PDR/CDR MECH4552 Major Design Project formulate the technical specifications for the project via a process of negotiation with the course coordinator and project supervisor complete designs with a high level of scientific and engineering rigor. Students are responsible for managing the projects, and for coordinating the workload within their group. 8
MECH4552 Major Design Project Design Logbooks 10% Preliminary Design Review (PDR) Report 5% Video 10% Critical Design Review (CDR) 15% Final Design Report 55% Reflection 5% WebPA Team Peer Review used to assign marks for individuals for team tasks. How is a topic for a design project found? Option 1 Select your project from the list of projects offered by academic staff in the School List of projects from academics and researchers in the School (MECH4552) https://student.eait.uq.edu.au/projectdb/ Discuss potential projects with the academics Final project groups will be formulated in week 1 of semester 9
How is a topic for a design project found? Option 2 Propose your own project and group (up to four students) Prepare a project proposal (intro, aims, methodology, expected outcomes) Take your proposal to the course coordinator. If you and the coordinator agree on the project, in week 1 of the semester the group will be finalised other students may be added to the group If you and the coordinator do not agree that the project is feasible, go to Option 1. Finally, for Thesis or Design Choose a topic that is interesting to you, is challenging, and will allow you to hone and demonstrate your engineering skills 10
