Nrth Shre Senir High Schl 2016-2017 AP Spanish Literature and Culture Curse Syllabus Mrs. Cuevas Cnference perid: 1 st Perid Tutrials: Tuesday and Thursday after Schl: - (2:45 3:15 p.m.) Phne: 832-386-4834 Text: Azulej Curse Overview: The AP Spanish Literature curse is equivalent t a third year cllege curse in Peninsular and Latin American Literature. The curse gives students the pprtunity t explre majr wrks f literature in all the principal literary genres shrt stries, drama, nvels, essays, and petry by writers frm arund the Hispanic wrld. Students read wrks frm the Middle Ages t the 20th century and learn abut the majr literary mvements thrughut histry. T help prepare students fr thse texts, we engage in pre-reading activities such as examining the writers bigraphical infrmatin and the scial, histrical, and literary cntexts f the wrks. Students learn the vcabulary necessary t talk and write abut literature, with special attentin t the literary terms that they will see n the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam. A majr fcus f the curse is t teach students t understand and analyze literary texts, and thrughut the year we wrk n building cmpsitin skills. All f the wrks included n the fficial AP Spanish Literature and Culture reading list are taught during the academic year. In additin t all the wrks, the students will be prvided with the scicultural cntext necessary t fully cmprehend each piece and with reflectin questins t g beynd factual recall. Students are als trained t understand and analyze audi surces lectures, interviews with authrs, etc. since listening cmprehensin will be tested n the AP Exam. The curse is cnducted cmpletely in Spanish. Curse Objectives: The main bjective f the curse is t help students see the cnnectins between literary wrks prduced in different times and in different places, as well as the cnnectin between these wrks, and students wn experiences. Students are encuraged t think critically abut the readings in the brad cntext f the five majr curse themes, as well as in the specific histrical, scial, and cultural cntexts they represent.

Grading Scale: 70% Tests, Essays, Prjects 30% Daily wrk / quizzes / hmewrk My evaluatin f yur prgress frm semester t semester will fcus n yur knwledge abut the Literature wrks f the AP prgram, and n yur verall ability t use the literary terms. The intent f every classrm activity, hmewrk assignment and test will be t that purpse. Retest Plicy: Students wh earn belw a 70% n a test will be allwed the pprtunity t retest prvided that they have cmpleted all assignments fr that unit and attended a tutrial. The retest will be scheduled befre the next test is given. The student's retest grade will be averaged with the riginal, and the new scre will be recrded, but cannt be mre than 70%. Example: The riginal test was a 60%, and the retest grade was 84%. The average f thse 2 grades is a 72%, but the highest pssible retest average is a 70%, s a %70 is recrded. Ggle Classrm: We will be using ggle classrm during the year, this will help yu with any missing assignments r regular hmewrk during the class. The themes may be cmbined, as they are interrelated. Attendance, Class Rules and Keys t Success: Attendance is extremely imprtant fr success in a freign language. Sectin I: Multiple Chice 65 questins; 1 hur and 20 minutes Part A: Interpretive Listening 15 questins; 20 minutes (10% f final exam grade) Three sets f questins based n authentic audi texts including an excerpt frm an interview with an authr, a recited pem that is nt n the required reading list, and a brief presentatin n a literary tpic related t curse cntent. Yu will have time t skim the questins fr each set befre listening t the audi. The interview and presentatin will be played nce; the recited pem will be played twice. Part B: Reading Analysis 50 questins; 1 hur (40% f final exam grade) Six sets f questins based n readings frm a variety f genres, perids, and places in the Spanish-speaking wrld. The readings include wrks frm the required reading list, wrks that are nt n the list, and ne passage f literary criticism regarding a wrk r authr frm the list. One set will cntain tw passages that are related by theme ne f thse passages is taken frm the required reading list. Ttal scres n the multiple-chice sectin are based n the number f questins answered crrectly. Pints are nt deducted fr incrrect answers and n pints are awarded fr unanswered questins. Sectin II: Free Respnse 4 questins; 1 hur and 40 minutes 2 Shrt Answer Questins: 30 minutes, 15% f final exam grade Text Explanatin read an excerpt frm a text n the required reading list, identify the authr and perid f the text, and explain the develpment f a given theme fund within the excerpt in relatin t the whle wrk frm which the excerpt is taken. Text and Art Cmparisn read an excerpt frm a text n the required reading list and study an image f a wrk f art (e.g., a painting, phtgraph, sculpture, r drawing) related by theme t the text. Yu will cmpare hw a particular theme is represented in bth the text and the image, and then t cnnect that theme t the genre, perid, r mvement f the text. 2 Essay Questins: 1 hur and 10 minutes; 35% f final exam grade Analysis f a Single Text read an excerpt frm a text n the required reading list and then analyze hw the text represents the characteristics f a particular genre and als a particular histrical, cultural, r scial cntext.
