page 1 I. EXECUTIVE BOARD Present membership from the European Region 1. The Region has seven seats on the Board, which from May 2001 will be filled by persons designated by Belgium, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Two seats will become vacant in May 2002, when the terms of office of the members designated by Belgium and Switzerland will expire. Candidatures 2. In his letter of 5 January 2001, the Regional Director requested Member States to inform him whether they wished to submit candidatures for election at the Fifty-fifth World Health Assembly in 2002, and the governments of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, the Russian Federation, Spain and Uzbekistan have announced their intention of doing so. 3. Nominations from those countries were received at the Regional Office by 10 March 2001, and the corresponding curricula vitae in standard format are contained in pages 4 to 12. Overview of membership 4. Table 1 shows which countries in the European Region designated members of the Executive Board in the period 1981 2004.

When considering document EUR/RC43/Inf.Doc./1 and adopting resolution EUR/RC43/R6, the Regional Committee at its forty-third session recognized the importance of selecting members of the SCRC who not only have a high level of competence in and knowledge of public health but are also available for and committed to the work of the SCRC. It also agreed that there should be a balance among members in terms of individual qualities, skills, competence and experience, as well as equitable geographical distribution between larger and smaller countries. 6. It will be recalled that the terms of office of members from the Czech Republic, Ireland and Spain will expire at the fifty-first session of the Regional Committee. The Regional Committee will therefore be requested to elect new members of the SCRC, each having a three-year term of office (from September 2001 to September 2004). 7.
