UNIVERSITY OF DERBY JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE DEPARTMENT / COLLEGE LOCATION Associate Professor: Learning and Teaching Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Kedleston Road JOB NUMBER 0749-17 SALARY 49149 to 52000 per annum REPORTS TO Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Lead Role Summary This is an exciting opportunity to influence learning and teaching in the University s new Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. You will contribute to and influence the University s strategies for improving learning, teaching and assessment practices through academic leadership and research activity with a key focus on pedagogical research. Our aim is to work collaboratively to develop and enhance academic practice across the University with a view to promoting and sharing best practice to secure our reputation for excellence in the sector. Under the direction of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Lead, you will work with staff to identify, promote and develop excellence in learning, teaching and assessment. You will work with staff to develop collaborative research bids and identify and promote the links to pedagogic practice, the curriculum and student experience as appropriate. You will make a significant contribution to the leadership, management and development of teaching, learning and assessment strategies and leading edge practice including digital pedagogies and curriculum design. It is expected that you will maintain your professional currency by contributing to learning and teaching in different programmes, including the University s Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education programme and that you will work with academic staff to develop opportunities for dissemination of their work within and beyond the University through a range of academic activity including collaborative projects with students. Principal Accountabilities Learning / Teaching 1. Under the direction of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Lead work in collaboration with other senior academics and academic staff participate in the development and management of the key strategies across the University, including the Learning & Teaching, Assessment & Feedback and 1
Technology Enhanced Learning strategies. 2. Actively contribute to the wider strategic agenda of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and engage with inter-institutional networking to raise the external profile of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. 3. Under the direction of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Lead work with programme teams to review and develop the curriculum to ensure an excellent academic experience for students and work in collaboration with staff in the quality assurance standards for academic practice. 4. Guide and provide advice for staff in the design, development and delivery of a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as appropriate. 5. Undertake research-led and research-informed teaching and facilitation of learning through lectures, seminars, tutorials and other classes as appropriate in support of teaching requirements, promoting these approaches across the University. 6. Pro-actively engage in seeking and promoting innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment methods, including digital practices to support student centred learning. 7. Provide high quality undergraduate and postgraduate supervision where relevant. 8. Actively contribute to the development of inclusive and accessible academic policies and practices across the University. 9. Be pro-active in seeking funding for and lead initiatives which identify new and best practice in teaching and learning and promote it across the University and the sector as a whole. 10. Ensure that a broad knowledge of research and scholarship in relevant disciplines is kept up to date in order to demonstrate that teaching meets and goes beyond the required standards. 11. Work collaboratively with staff to lead, write or edit text books and / or professional activity materials as appropriate, to support effective teaching and learning. 12. Provide strategic leadership for staff and make a significant contribution to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Leadership and Management 13. Contribute to academic leadership and administration of the Centre, to facilitate the delivery of high quality teaching, learning, knowledge transfer and/or research. 14. Engage with staff in their continuing professional development and work with different teams to develop high-quality professional practice programmes. 15. Undertake a range of leadership and management activities as appropriate which may include, but is not limited to, line managing individuals and / or teams within areas of responsibility, chairing and participating in University-level committees, leading and developing external networks, acting as a personal mentor to peers and colleagues, taking responsibility for building and developing pedagogic research capacity across the University. 2
Other 16. Work across the University to help build interdisciplinary team working in conjunction with other academic staff. 17. Establish contacts and develop entrepreneurial links with organisations such as commercial companies, professional bodies, other academic institutions, government and other agencies. 18. Contribute to research activity where appropriate to support and enhance teaching practice, such as quality assurance, external decision making bodies and research councils. 19. Develop successful results in enterprise and knowledge transfer, e.g. income, intellectual property or other outputs. 20. Carry out administrative duties in order to contribute to the efficient management and administration of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. 21. Participate in the dissemination of research at conferences and events within the University and externally with staff and students where appropriate. 22. Observe and implement University policies and procedures. Person Specification Essential Criteria Qualifications Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline or appropriate level of professional practice experience Post graduate certificate in Teaching and Learning in HE or equivalent qualification Subject specific qualifications / knowledge Experience An appropriate level of digital capability with practical experience of applications Significant evidence of teaching, scholarship, research and leading edge practice at a regional / national / international level Proven experience of a leadership and development role in high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level Evidence of successful development of curriculum design and management of quality enhancement to ensure excellence and promote innovation Knowledge of current national and international drivers for academic practice within higher education with ability to horizon scan for cutting edge approaches in learning and teaching 3
