This is JCC. ~ Cory L. Duckworth, J.D. Dear Alumus, Today s world is a oisy oe. As techology elarges our social spheres ad ehaces the coectios betwee them, it ll get eve oisier. That meas it s more difficult tha ever for a orgaizatio to stad out from the crowd. Compaies the world over sped billios o bradig ad istitutios of higher educatio are o differet. We ivest heavily i our brad ad sped a great deal of time strategizig about the best way to leverage that ivestmet. But what s i a brad? For may orgaizatios, it s about logos, slogas, ad compay colors. JCC has those thigs, of course, but we take it oe importat step farther. Our brad is you, our alumi. You are our greatest success. You are the best example of our work. You shie a spotlight o the importace of this college, every sigle day, through your efforts to make your commuity a better place to live, work, ad play. Our brad is, too, the values we istill i our alumi. A commitmet to excellece. A lifelog desire to lear ad grow. A desire to help others ad serve their commuities with a deep sese of purpose. This is our brad. This is JCC. So may of our alumi have emerged as commuity ad busiess leaders with whom JCC ejoys a great ad rewardig relatioship. Others are members of the faculty ad staff at this great college, each of whom cotiually ispires me. As presidet, I have had the pleasure of meetig may of our alumi ad i each oe of them I see the JCC brad persoified. Perhaps most rewardig of all: I am i a uique positio to watch the JCC brad begi to emerge i those who have yet to cross the stage. I this issue of gree&gold, we celebrate a few of the more tha 21,000 livig examples of the JCC brad. The alumi featured i these pages are creators i their ow ways: oe is a artist; oe is a etrepreeur; oe is a mayor; ad several are authors. Each is shapig the world, armed with fresh ideas, the stregth of their beliefs, ad the foudatio of a JCC educatio. I kow that I speak for all of us at JCC whe I say that we re so very proud of our alumi ad all that you ve accomplished. Yours, Cory L. Duckworth, J.D. The Space to Create: Jerry Lee, 99 Heavy o creativity. Light o pretese. That s The Quilted Squirrel i a utshell (forgive us). It s a quirky, fullservice marketig firm based i Hamburg, NY. As far as co-fouder Jerry Lee, Class of 99, is cocered, success is about creatig space for creativity, gettig excited, ad ever takig thigs too seriously. alumiprofile Jerry Lee Co-Fouder, The Quilted Squirrel Hamburg, New York Coect with Jerry: likedi.com/i/jerryleecreative twitter.com/squirrelquilted Educatio: Jamestow Commuity College A.S., Liberal Arts & Scieces (1999) SUNY Fredoia B.A., Fie Arts, Media Arts (2004) St. Boaveture Uiversity, M.A. Itegrated Marketig Commuicatios (2012) Uiversity of Oxford, coursework Itegrated Marketig Commuicatios (2012) The combiatio works: the firm has grow from a two-perso shop to iclude eight employees, plus a iter or two. The firm couts amog its cliets a variety of Wester New York orgaizatios icludig St. Boaveture Uiversity ad Sweet Home Federal Credit Uio, as well as atioal compaies icludig Fisher-Price, FedEx, ad Perry s Ice Cream. We make sure othig curbs creativity, Lee said. Nothig is ever off the table. Some of our best ideas come to light whe we re talkig about a completely differet project. Beig your ow boss [meas you ca let] your creativity reig. We fid that we do t have to be crazy ad sometimes, the creativity comes through i how you deliver the messages as much as it does i the message itself. Lee who worked i maufacturig for more tha a decade ad eared several promotios durig that time said he became more cocered with climbig the corporate ladder tha he had ever iteded. He realized it was time for a chage. I had created some great work with some amazig people ad leared a icredible amout about busiess, he said. But I foud that my persoal goals were t easily attaiable withi their busiess structure. There are limitatios to truly impactig someoe else s busiess. But eve while I was lookig to participate i itegral, impactful busiess decisios, I had ever cosidered etrepreeurship. Util he met Steve Ligle. Steve has always had the etrepreeurial bug, Lee said. He was fearless ad cofidet. We started talkig about the ladscape of marketig ad advertisig agecies i Wester New York ad saw a opportuity to really create somethig excitig. We could work without the restraits of a corporate orgaizatioal chart ad could trust i our ow isticts to develop ideas. what career paths iterested me. I saw JCC as a fail-proof way to take some time decidig o my career. I kew the classes I took would be trasferrable. Ad maybe this is t a sexy aswer, but the humaities program was t itimidatig. It was Deb Lai, a former commuicatio ad media arts professor ad the coordiator for JCC s commuicatio ad media arts program, who helped Lee avigate his time at JCC. Deb was immeasurably helpful, he said. She might be the world s most carig idividual ad you should prit that, because she deserves to have everyoe hear it. She treated me like a legitimate desiger, eve though I had t doe aythig to prove or deserve it. She was my soudig board o everythig from employmet optios to cotiuig educatio. She helped me to hoe i o a graphic desig focus. Deb s ecouragemet led me to fid cofidece i myself. Lee also remembered Bill Disbro, a artist who was hired i 1970 as JCC s first full-time art professor. It was Disbro who developed ad itroduced the college s first art program ad he who helped Lee realize he had stadards. He oce told me that oe of the assigmets I had haded i was t up to my stadards, Lee said. That was pretty profoud. I did t kow that I had a stadard. At that poit I did. Asked for advice to share with curret or future JCC studets, Lee said he d ecourage studets to be their ow judge of their worth ad to fid it i places other tha their report cards. O Beig Eergized I get excited about what we ve created at The Quilted Squirrel. We have employees that have chose to work with us over other great opportuities. We ve attracted amazigly taleted people ad we ve created a eviromet that they seem to ejoy. I get excited thikig about the great work that s beig created that makes me pretty happy. O Itetio We set out with the itetio of creatig a busiess, ad tried hard to avoid beig a couple guys who do marketig. That meas treatig your busiess like it s more tha a startup; like there s a purpose for what you do, ad the world eeds it. O Etrepreeurship PLAN! We put together a 100-page research report ad busiess pla that outlied our goals ad expectatios of the busiess. It helped us to secure fudig, ad more importatly, to covice our spouses. Etrepreeurship is t easy. It takes a lot of your time, ad moopolizes your thoughts. It s worth it, but it is t for the fait of heart. Be prepared, ad lear everythig you ca about your market before you begi. It was that eed for space the space a creator eeds to explore that led Lee to Jamestow Commuity College i the first place. Goig ito college at 18, I did t have may plas for my time at JCC, Lee said. I wated to take some art classes ad try to decide Whe you re i a situatio of learig, it s easy to let istructors give you grades o your performace, ad to judge your worth by test scores, he said. The grades are importat, but there are may valuable coectios you ll fid i school ad i life, that cotribute greatly to persoal developmet. JAMESTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ALUMNI MAGAZINE SUMMER 2016 05

He ever iteded to be a politicia. Yet that s exactly where life has take him. Now a 30-year vetera of the Chautauqua Couty Sheriff s Office, where he is a patrol lieuteat, Resel has spet 12 years i politics, most recetly as mayor of the village of Falcoer. The local political eviromet fasciates me because, for the most part, people from differet political poits of view get alog well together ad support each other, he said. I feel privileged to be mayor ad I am blessed to be able to work with the village s employees we have workig for the village. Resel chose to begi his educatio at JCC for several reasos ad said the college was istrumetal i reiforcig his career choice. alumiprofile Jim Resel Patrol Lieuteat Chautauqua Couty Sheriff s Office Other Positios: Mayor, Village of Falcoer Certified Police Topics Istructor, JCC Educatio: Jamestow Commuity College, A.S., Crimial Justice (1983) Buffalo State College, B.S., Crimial Justice (1985) As a tee livig i Essex, Uited Kigdom, she applied ad was iterviewed for admissio to the exclusive Royal College of Arts i Lodo. Her applicatio for admissio was ultimately deied. Crushed, she put aside ay hope of goig to art school ad focused o her secod love: physics. Ad the life happeed. As she was preparig to leave for college, she met the ma who would become her husbad. She applied for a year off from school, fully itedig to cotiue her pursuit of a degree. But by the ed of the year, she was married ad movig to America. Life did t stop there, though: three childre further paused her plas for a educatio. Fast forward about a doze years later, ad life agai iterveed but this time, to put Eck where she eeded to be exactly whe she eeded to be there. Durig a chace ecouter at a backyard barbecue, she met Bob Schlick, 72, the logtime coordiator of JCC s Scharma Theatre. They spoke about her experiece with theatrical costume desig ad, as it tured out, he eeded someoe to create costumes for a productio. That coversatio got me thikig about goig to college, Eck said. Workig with the studets i that productio made me thik that maybe returig to school was t such a crazy idea. I filled out a applicatio before I could lose courage ad the ext thig I kew I was erollig i classes. Like may o-traditioal studets, Eck had her doubts. She said she was afraid of goig back to school ad ervous about whether she d fit i with the youger studets. Would she be competitive? Was it too late? But JCC was coveiet it was close to home ad eabled her to take classes o a flexible schedule ad she had a solid etwork of frieds ad family willig to help her juggle the kids schedules. Fiacial assistace made it icredibly affordable, too. Ultimately, she kew JCC was her big opportuity to make her dream come true. Hoestly, it all felt like a secod chace to see if I had what it would take to become a artist a dream I had ever really totally give up o or forgotte, she said. Whe my work was accepted ito the college s Juried Studet Art Exhibitio durig my sophomore year, it was such a positive affirmatio. Seeig your work up o the wall is really trasformative. At that momet, I started to believe that I really could become a artist. She has, ideed, become a artist a iteratioally exhibited artist, by the way ad has also emerged as a professor ad a commuity leader. Without JCC it would ever have happeed, she said. Applyig to a four-year school as a o-traditioal studet was too itimidatig. I just would t have goe back. JCC made me feel like I did t stad out too much. It was JCC that re-igited my passio ad gave me the cofidece to pursue my goals. JCC was a great choice. It was affordable, it eabled me to live at home ad go to college, ad I could keep workig my part-time jobs, he said. That made it so much easier to save moey ad go o for my bachelor s degree. While a studet at JCC, Resel was presidet of the college s Crimial Justice Club. He also performed a itership at the Chautauqua Couty Sheriff s Office a experiece he described as his most memorable at JCC. I was able to sped time i all aspects of the Sheriff s Office ad was able to make importat career etworkig coectios ad relatioships that helped me start my career, he said. Ad I specifically remember Dick Weber, a crimial justice professor at the college. Whe it came to my goals, he was very ecouragig. All of my professors were available to me for guidace or cosultatio. Resel ad his family his wife of 25 years, Elizabeth, ad their childre, Rya, Emily, ad Valerie moved to Falcoer i 1991. I 2004, he was appoited a village trustee, fillig a vacat positio o the board. He later wo electio to that seat three times i a row ad was amed the village s deputy mayor. He was elected as mayor i November 2015. My path to mayor defiitely evolved, he said. I ever iteded to get ito politics. But as a member of the Falcoer Fire Departmet, there was a issue that motivated me to give it a try. Ad ow, 12 years later, here I am, workig with a great team of people to improve the quality of life i the village.
