PELLISSIPPI STATE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE MASTER SYLLABUS APPLIED MECHANICS MET 2025 Class Hours: 3.0 Credit Hours: 4.0 Laboratory Hours: 3.0 Revised: Fall 06 Catalog Course Description: A study of the forces acting on bodies in motion and in the selection and application of basic elements common to most mechanical designs. Topics include linear and rotational motion, displacement, acceleration, velocity, work, energy, power, shafts, bearings, power transmission, fasteners, and lubrication. Topics are presented that will foster a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement, as they apply to modern machine design practices. Entry Level Standards: Students entering this course must have a working knowledge of statics and strength of materials. Testing Procedures: Reports & Presentations: (25 Points) The course instructor will assign topics related to developing a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement, as well as topics concerning emerging trends in design of mechanical components and systems. Unit Exams: (40 Points) There will be 5-6 unit exams administered during the course. B. Laboratory Expectations: Laboratory (25 Points) Laboratory will include problem-solving sessions and a special design project. Guidelines and requirements for the special project will be provided by the instructor. C. Field Work: N/A D. Other Evaluation Methods: Participation (10 Points) Based on instructor observation during the course, each student will be evaluated on participation activities. Evaluation parameters to include active participation in class discussions and exercises, response to verbal questions, quizzes, and regular attendance. E. VII. Policies: A. Attendance Policy: Pellissippi State Technical Community College expects students to attend all scheduled instructional activities. As a minimum, students in all courses must be present for at least 75 percent of their scheduled class and laboratory meetings in order to receive credit for the course (Pellissippi State Catalog). Individual departments/ programs/ disciplines, with the approval of the vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, may have requirements that are more stringent. B. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular Pellissippi State procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.
