Page 2 Science with Mrs. Roe Marcia.roe@crownpointeacademy.org X504 All Classes: A safety contract was sent home on Friday to review and remind students about proper lab behavior. They need to bring it back signed on Monday to participate. This quarter we will be focusing on lab skills as well as content skills and I would love to open up my classroom on Lab Mondays to have some extra hands in the classroom to assist me in running the labs. If they are absent on any of these Monday's there will be a make up day before spring break. If they break the contract due to their behavior in class they will be sent out of the room and assigned a written assignment that the highest grade to replace the missed lab will be a 70%. This quarter 6th grade will be studying ecology, 7th grade the human body and 8th grade chemistry. The dates for Lab Monday's are: January 23rd January 30th February 6th February 13th February 27th March 6th March 13th If you are interested in helping out for a particular grade or a particular day please let me know and I can give you greater details as to the labs. 6th grade: Continue Ecology Unit 6th grade has received their semester ecosystem project. Please ask your student to see the timeline for each of the parts and what location they were assigned. Part 1 of this project is vocabulary and a webquest, it is due February 3rd. 7th grade: Continue the human body- Circulatory System. All classes are going to be participating in Finance Fridays. Every Friday we will be working through curriculum either through Junior Achievement or EverFi to help students build their financial education and help prepare them with practical tools to help them be financially successful in the real world. Students receive an Article of the Week on Wednesdays. Last week s is due January 18th. This week will be due January 25th. The AoW is always available on Google Classroom the Thursday after I hand it out in class. 8th Grade Parents - Please see the Continuation info in the Continuation section below. Because I have not been able to get my website working properly, I will only be using Google Classroom for assignments. Students have access to it through their school email addresses. I will be putting daily work as well as homework up on it. Please make sure you have access to Infinite Campus for grade information. Students must have internet access on a nightly basis as we will be relying on our digital texts as well as an online classroom forum called Google Classroom. Please make a plan so that students can finish homework on time. It is important for all students to have their interactive binders and pencil pouches as well as a couple of other items I have given them in class daily. This week we will continue looking at the earliest civilizations on earth. 7 th Grade Social Studies The Fertile Crescent and Junior Achievement Essential Question: What are the consequences of technology? We will continue looking at the ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and how they affect us today. 8 th Grade Social Studies A Constitution for the United States and EverFi FutureSmart Essential Question: How much power should government have? In this unit we will study how and why the Constitution was drafted and its impact on us today. During this unit students will be reading through the Constitution as it is written but we will have a lot of discussion on what it means. Continuation Info There was a scheduling conflict that resulted in the date for Continuation being changed. CONTINUATION WILL NOW BE HELD ON MON- DAY, MAY 22nd. Please mark your calendars accordingly. Our next meeting for Continuation is Thursday, February 9th. Please begin collecting pictures of your 8th graders. We need 5-8 pictures of each student to use in our slideshow and memory book. Specifically we need a baby picture, an elementary picture, and a current picture and then some others in between. Weighted Grades I do weight my grades for academic classes as follows: Tests/Projects = 40% Quizzes/Homework/Classwork = 35% Notes/Participation/ = 25% This does make it so that you can t add up their total number of points and divide it by the total points possible and calculate a correct grade. Students will also practice using indefinite pronouns and making pronouns and antecedents agree in number. Homework on Wednesday night will include pages in the purple grammar skill book (see website for specific page numbers). 8th Grade Writing: As we continue on The Book Thief this week, we will still be focusing on identifying evidence from the text to support analysis of the novel. Students will be asked to take home reading on Thursday night - most students will access it online via the class website; a few paper copies will be available to students who do not have internet access. Then, we will also continue our sentence study this week as we learn about compound sentences and comma splices. The flipped classroom approach seemed to work well, so students will be asked to view an online video on Tuesday night in order to prepare for class on Wednesday.

Until the previous quarter s requirements are met no new credit will be given. Students will receive 20 points for each completed half hour of service in the quarterly requirement. Additional half hours are credited to the following quarter up to the 10 hour requirement. Once the 10 hour requirement is met the student will receive a 100% for that quarter and all following quarters. A log (available in Mrs. Hughes room) must be completed for each month s service and turned in to Mrs. Hughes room. Partial half hours will receive no credit. Hours turned in after the quarterly deadline will be counted toward the total in the next quarter.
