Preface All good things must come to an end. So must it be with PRIMARY GOES EUROPE, the very successful COMENIUS ACTION 3.1 and 3.2 project. With this PRIMARY GOES EUROPE MANUAL 6 we have reached the point when we must say good bye from the organisers desks in Vienna, Austria. For a last time in April and May 2001, we assembled over 30 teachers and teacher trainers from 16 European countries in the beautiful town of EXETER, Devon, and we are particularly proud of this record number of participating countries, including Malta, all of the Baltic states, but also Gran Canaria and Hungary. No doubt, the beautiful setting of the Crossmead Conference Centre added to the successful work of the teachers from abroad but also of the teachers and their children in the participating Devon primary schools. This MANUAL called THE DEVON FINAL is the visible result of everybody s dedication and the high spirits prevailing throughout those 9 days in the spring of 2001, nearly 5 years after PRIMARY GOES EUROPE had started its work in the line of professional in-service teacher training in 1996. From the original 5 partners, three were still willing to carry on with the efforts: Anne Bauers from East Anglia, Ada Quade from Mecklenburg- Vorpommern and the Vienna based team around Franz Schimek and Franz Meidl. New and most important were IPC (www.ipcexeter.co.uk) in Exeter under the guiding hand of Ben Thorne and CERNET in Vienna. CERNET (Central European Regional Network for Education Transfer - www.cernet.at) not only sponsored the participation of three teachers in the Exeter event (one each from Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) but also offered the most needed financial help for this publication. Franz Schimek set the PGE train on new rails that will eventually bring the best results of this COMENIUS project into the newly formed COMENIUS ACTION 2 project called EUROPEAN PRIMARY VILLAGE, due to start in September 2001, again dedicated to the professional in-service training of primary teachers across Europe. Further more, the ideas of Primary Goes Europe will be integrated into the Central European network provided by CERNET. Look out for more while you are successfully using this MANUAL! The making of the European Union is going on and the primary teachers have a great duty to perform as part of this process. Franz Meidl (Co-ordinator)
