21 AUGUST 2017 VOLUME 85 ISSUE 3 Tena koutou, Talowha, E a mai Koe, Dear Parents and Caregivers, Yesterday we were lucky enough to host a delegation from our sister school Suzhou No.1 High School in China. After being welcomed to our school by our Kapa Haka group and joining us for liturgy led by Rooms 3 and 4, the group of 14 students and 3 teachers enjoyed activities with the Toki hub and joined the staff for a Kiwiana themed morning tea. This was a fabulous opportunity for our students to find out about life in China and to practice their Mandarin. We look forward to having more opportunities like this to develop our relationship with our sister school. We celebrated the Feast of the Assumption with a lovely school mass last Tuesday. Congratulations to Elaine Hanford who coordinated this in her role as DRS for the term and to our students who participated proudly. It was lovely to read such positive comments about our mass in the Parish newsletter last Sunday. Have a great week, Ange Edhouse Principal ST PATRICK S CATHOLIC SCHOOL TAUPO SCHOOL MOBILE 027 756 4498 OR PH 378 0205 COLLEGE ENROLMENTS - 2018 Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and Tauhara College In Term 3 both colleges in Taupo will be conducting enrolments for 2018. CATHOLIC CHARACTER CORNER Last week we celebrated the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. QUESTION: What is the Assumption of Mary? ANSWER: The Assumption of Mary is a doctrine which teaches that after the mother of Jesus died, she was resurrected, glorified, and taken bodily to heaven. The word assumption is taken from a Latin word meaning to take up. PRAYER Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, For all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb Was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. BOOMERANG BAGS During the month of September there will be a class competition to see who can make the most boomerang bags. Our environmental group think that this is a good way to care for the environment. To find out more about these cloth bags google Boomerang Bags Taupo. These bags come in a kit set form (all cut and ready to sew) with sewing instructions. Students will take these home to be sewn by or with an adult. The class that sews the most will get pizza for lunch. ABSENCES A friendly reminder that the school day begins at 8.55am and if your child is absent for any reason, to contact the school office before this. If your child is absent without notification, the school office will phone you. Your child will be marked truant if the office has not heard from anyone in regards to their absence. You can contact the school directly by: Phone: 378 0205 Email: office@stpatstaupo.school.nz School app notification SCHOOL GALA 10TH NOVEMBER Planning is well underway for our school gala, to be held on the 10 th of November this year. So far we have a delicious assortment of food, a heap of fun games, some exciting raffles and some very interesting things to buy at the different stalls. There is, however, plenty of time for our wonderful school community to get involved. We will be looking for items to sell at our White Elephant stall, so start looking through your cupboards and putting things aside. We are also keen to hear from anyone who would like to run a stall or activity, or who would like to donate a product or service that could be raffled or sold. To get more info or make a donation, contact our PTFA chairperson Steve Comber on 027 285 8045 or heidiandsteve@xtra.co.nz, or come along to our next PTFA meeting at 7pm on September 6 th, in the staff room.

ST PATRICK S SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY 2017 The school cross country is being held tomorrow, Wednesday 23 August. Start time is 9.15am up on the top field. PLASTIC FREE SEPTEMBER Next month St Patrick s will be holding a Plastic Free challenge. The purpose of this challenge is to make us more conscious about the plastic we use every day and how it affects our environment. We hope to generate and raise awareness in our school and our community. If you can reduce the consumption just a little bit, you've already done a great job! Our Enviro Group is leading the Plastic Free September challenge with their focus on learning about waste. It is a great learning opportunity developing knowledge, awareness and attitudes towards the use and affects of plastic. These are important values and skills enabling our students and St Pat s community to help improve the quality of our environment, making our place, a good place to be. During the month there will be a challenge for the students involving making Boomerang Bags. Boomerang Bags Taupo are active in our community in their aim is to reduce the amount of single use plastic bags by providing cloth reuseable bags for free, made by volunteers with donated material. We hope this will be a fun, constructive and positive exercise for the students! Did you know New Zealand churns through about one billion lightweight plastic bags each year! 110 per second! Can we do better? Here are some simple ideas for Plastic Free September: Choose reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones. Checkout Boomerang Bags Taupo. Their next sewing bee in 2 nd Sep. Ctrl/Click on the link to their Facebook page Boomerang Bags Taupo Use lunch boxes with compartments instead of using gladwrap. Reuse zip-lock bags in lunchboxes Use a refillable stainless steel water bottle avoid buying water. Drink without using a plastic straw....choose to refuse single-use plastic during September. Let s get on board and make a difference!
