Seven Devils Shines! You can't be a beacon, if your light don't shine! is a line from Donna Fargo's best known hit song. If you look around Seven Devils you will see the shining effects of the hard work put forth to make Seven Devils a better place to call home. Seven Devils is a better place not only because of the quality of our employees, but also due, in no small part, to our friends and neighbors who volunteer their time and efforts to better our Town. Take a look at the new playground next to the tennis courts. What a wonderful addition to our Town made possible through the efforts of Public Works and volunteers who serve on the TDA to provide funding, volunteers who serve on the Recreation Commission who planned and executed the playground effort, and the neighbors who made the equipment available at a reduced cost. Take a look at the Seven Devils First Responders program. Recently, on a beautiful mountain Sunday morning, a medical alert call went out. The Seven Devils Police Officer on duty plus four volunteer first responders were on scene in minutes equipped with medical equipment funded, in part, by funds from the annual SafetyFest. The SafetyFest is planned and executed by volunteers on the Safety Committee and manned each year by an additional 75 volunteers. These are just two examples of how important volunteers are to our small community of how our light shines brighter due to their dedication. So, join me in saluting our volunteers and thanking them whenever you can. Better yet, become a volunteer yourself. If you volunteer for a committee and give just two hours a month, that's only 2 minutes a day! Check our website or talk with Ed. There is definitely a place for you to volunteer. By joining a committee, you can help shape where Seven Devils is going as a shining community. Let's be a beacon! Grand Opening!! Please plan to join us on Saturday, October 6, from 10 am - 12 noon for the Grand Opening of the Seven Devils Playground. There will be refreshments and all are welcome. Bring your children and grandchildren to play on the swings and slides! Don't forget to bring your tennis rackets and bat around a few balls. There might even be a hoops contest! Thanks go out especially to the following: Kevin Aldridge, Public Works Director; Brian Johnson, Kevin "Bubba" Russell, Bobby Powell, and Roy Vance. They did all the work from clearing the playground property, to erecting the playground, spreading all that mulch, and finally hanging the swings! Carolynne & John Barrs from Playgrounds of the Carolinas were on hand to supervise and even hauled the equipment to us from their offices. We appreciate their great service and help to our community! H ope you didn t miss the 9th Annual Seven Devils SafetyFest on Saturday, June 30, 2012. It was a beautiful sunny day one of the hottest on record. It was a day for checking out the craft booths, nibbling on something from the bake sale, listening for your name as a raffle winner, bidding on a silent auction item and enjoying the best BBQ in the High Country. This year we had a limited amount of smoked turkey on sale for takeout let us know if it should be offered in the future. Seven Devils Public Safety Officers and Firemen welcomed the children at the squirt house and the smoke house. They also passed out goodie bags and fingerprinted in ID kits. SafetyFest 2012 was a chance to get together with family, friends, neighbors and visitors. Proceeds benefit the Seven Devils Fire, Police, and Public Works Departments, which benefit all citizens. Thank you for your support. The Seven Devils Recreation Commission joined in to raise funds for the playground. Recreation Commission members and volunteers manned the book sale. A highlight was the area they set up as a Kid Carnival with face painting, games, and prizes. Young and old enjoyed playing putt-putt. It was a super SafetyFest day! Thank you to our Platinum, Gold, Silver and Placemat Ad Sponsors and Silent Auction and Raffle contributors. A special thanks for the many volunteers and Town employees who helped to make this all possible from start up to wind down. SafetyFest 2012 would not have gotten off the ground without their time and energy. We are grateful for our volunteers can always use more! Join us next year, it s fun and rewarding! Page 5
