Recognizing the importance of voter education, especially in this year's historic election, students in Marist Principal Jay Conroy's AP American Government class presented opposing sides of the presidential candidates in a special school assembly on Oct. 29. On Monday, Nov. 3, students and staff will vote by secret ballot for their choices of president and vice president, U. Conroy stated that Our seniors have done a great job taking this seriously and pulling together very informative and thoughtful summary positions about the candidates and issues. Thanks, too, to our History department Misters Nuxoll, Chronister, Ragan (former history teacher, now counselor), Mullins and Fox for nudging the students and staff to make time for this in our busy academic schedules. We all hope it s one of those life skills that students take with them from their Marist experience. To avoid Florida's infamous "hanging chads" controversy of the highly contentious 2000 presidential election results, Scantron ballots and number 2 pencils will be used. Final vote tallies will be announced before the end of the school day along with online posting at Marisths.org. College Now at Marist Once again Marist students have the opportunity to earn college credit from Lane Community College s College Now program. College Now began at Marist Catholic High School last year and over 180 kids earned over 1000 college credit hours in this program. We are really hoping to exceed those numbers for the 2008-2009 school year. Students can earn credit in a number of subject areas including math, science, English, foreign languages and social studies. College Now courses are taught here at Marist by the students regular classroom teacher. Many students can earn up to a year s worth of college credit through this program. Many of our staff members are qualified to teach College Now courses due to their knowledge and education within their teaching area. We are very excited to work in conjunction with Lane Community College to offer this opportunity to our students and will be working diligently to increase our students access to this wonderful program. Parents, We re through ¼ of the school year and I m pleased to report Marist is doing exceptionally well as we undergo significant transitions on a number of levels. New staff, new leadership Our six new classroom teachers are receiving rave reviews from students, parents and fellow staff. The new teachers are bright, hardworking, caring and very effective across the board. Students in Japanese, Math/ Advanced Math, History, Advanced Spanish and Health/PE are receiving inspired instruction and learning opportunities. The Calculus class was again approved for College Now and Advanced Placement accreditation. The advanced Spanish students will be able to take CLEP tests in the spring towards college-level placement. And, our Japanese upper level classes have been approved for College Now credit. Thank you, Ms. King (Japanese), Mr. McDonald (Math), Mr. Mullins (History), Ms. Holowatz (Spanish), Mr. Geske and Mr. Wells (Health/ PE). Our new coaches joining us this fall have already garnered three league championships. Cross-country (girls) (Mr. Wells and Mr. Wagner), Soccer (girls)(ms. Konyn) and Football(Mr. Geske) while maintaining excellent participation rates. At the same time, our teams placed at the very top of all schools in the state for team GPA s for fall sports. Strong academics and strong sports participation can go together! Our new assistant principal, Mr. Martin, and our new Business Manager, Mrs. McClary have made great contributions to our overall school effectiveness and student performance. School finances With the hard work and organization of Reba McClary and with some significant adjustments to our finance program, I am pleased to report that even with very difficult financial times, we are running on a balanced budget and are looking ahead to an even stronger financial picture in the year ahead. A small senior class this year will, we project, be replaced with a significantly larger incoming 9 th grade class, class of 2013, and the overall gains in class sizes will help maintain our position. We are also working closely with the new Marist Catholic High School Board of Directors and the Marist Foundation to improve our financial base and plan for significant improvement in a number of key areas: 1)moving our staff salaries closer to par with local public school salary schedules; and 2) providing for much-needed updating of plumbing, heating and hot-water delivery. We are working hard to be good stewards of the support given us by parents and patrons, as well as being very thoughtful about how to provide the very best possible educational experiences for our children over the next ten years. New Board standing committees (Budget/Finance and Development) will be working these next three months to arrive at a responsible budget and tuition figure for 2009-10, that includes recommendations for maintaining the key elements of our strong school a top-level staff that is fairly compensated, a core program of faithbuilding opportunities, a strong, effective athletics and activities program, and a comfortable, positive physical plant. We are committed to small class sizes, strong college-prep classes and excellent, varied educational opportunities for all our students. Quarter grades Please sit down with your students to discuss their performance in their classes this 1 st quarter. It is 40% of their final grade with plenty of opportunity to improve including time to meet with their teachers and counselors. Your support as parents is critical in students doing well. Thank you!! Finally, on a personal note, thank you for the great support for my transition to the role of Principal. Marist has truly been a great gift for me challenging, faith-filled and very rewarding. Its focus and values are a great fit for me and I thank you all for your prayers, suggestions and opinions I ll make the most of them in working with you to give your students a tremendous educational experience. Marist Pétanque (Pay-tonk) The Ball Is Rolling! Pétanque Field of Dreams steps to creation and call for help. Ryan Baker, Foreign Language Department, Pétanque Head Coach Pétanque is a game t hat originated in southern France around the turn of the century. It is similar to Bocce (Italian) and Bowls (English), the main difference being that it is played on a hard surface with feet stationary and the boules tossed as opposed to being rolled. The basic idea is to get your ball closer to the target ball (le cochonnet) than your opponent s. There are two main types of throws pointing - getting your ball as close to the target as Marist Pétanque shirt logo designed by Cameron Giblin, '06 possible, and shooting, using your ball to knock other players out of the way. The great thing about this game is that anyone can play: men, women, young, old, able bodied or not, it is truly a life sport. Marist students were f irst introduced to the game in French classes and, in 2000, the Marist Pétanque team was born. Since then players have competed with local high schools in weekly matches in the fall and spring. Pétanquers from South Eugene, Sheldon, Churchill, North Eugene and Willamettte have been competing since the league s inception in 1999. There are currently between 15 and 20 players on the Marist team. Matches are serious affairs, but also great fun and an opportunity for Marist students to get to know students from other schools. After the match both teams share snacks: cheese, bread, cookies, chips, drinks, etc. in the traditional French spirit of the game. The Marist Pétanque team offers all students, regardless of athletic ability, the opportunity to be part of a team, to compete, to build confidence, to interact with students from other high schools, and to learn a game that they can play all their lives. In my quest to begin a proper Pétanque field to help solidify its place at Marist, I have found a spot on campus and received approval! Mention of our own field has already sparked enthusiasm and a feeling of validation from many of this season s players. A place to call our own is a truly an exciting prospect for these students. The field has been laid out, marked and staked, grass and weeds sprayed. Now I need your help. From the College Counselor's Desk Jerry Ragan, College Counselor; Senior Counselor; Testing Coordinator; MVP Moderator Several exciting things have happened over the last month or so and we have more to look forward to in the future. We had a successful Senior Parent Night on Sept. 24 with a majority of the senior families represented. That evening was followed by a successful visit from the seven Oregon state universities, plus Lane Community C o l l e g e, o n Tuesday, Oct. 21. In addition two college fairs have occurred, one in Portland and most recently, one at Lane Community College. Add to all these events the ongoing visits of individual colleges to our campus and we have had a busy college time of late. Marist is blessed with supportive parents and teachers and together we are working to make college a reality for all our students. Seniors should be making some headway into the college application process in the Fall. The goal should be to get the application work finished before the end of the year so that attention can turn to FAFSA in January and any additional scholarship applications that may be made. Seniors should also be actively registering for the SAT and or ACT, as recommended for them. If no SAT has been taken, get it completed ASAP! Remember, parents are helpful as guides in these tasks and should not be doing all the work. Our students should be heading off to college as owners of their decisions, their plans, and their futures. Juniors should be working hard in their classes (seniors too, by the way) and shooting to take an SAT in the spring of next year. Chris Hainley, a former Marist parent and long-time aid counselor at LCC, will be our featured speaker. He will help clear up what may seem to be a daunting task. College Night in Oregon is scheduled for Nov. 24 from 6-9:00 P.M. at the University of Oregon. College Goal Oregon is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Lane Community College. On a drop-in basis, mentors are available to help families and students complete and submit the FAFSA. The University of Oregon will most likely be accepting fewer students than last year when a large group accepted admission. This will condense the pool a bit, so it is best to get the U of O application in sooner rather than later. Be s u r e t o n o t e t h e admission requirements. Oregon State University will only accept standardized test scores from the testing institution. Therefore, though the scores are on the Marist transcript, they are not official. Remember to list the schools of your choice for every standardized test that is taken so that scores go automatically to those schools. The Marist Newsline November 2008 9

Our congratulations to the athletes for their accompishments and the coaches for their continued encouragement: Boys Cross Country, first overall in Oregon with a GPA of 3.94. Girls Cross Country, third in state 4A with a GPA of 3.92. Football, first in 4A with a GPA of 3.48. Boys Soccer, second in 4A with a GPA of 3.59. Girls Soccer, first in 4A with a GPA of 3.76. Volleyball, third in 4A with a GPA of 3.67. Jared Christian from The Spartan Spear Online Senior Jared Christian placed first in the Cross Country District Meet at LCC on Thursday the third consecutive Sky-Em League Champion from Marist. He used his strong kick to win the race in the last 1000 meters. I was very happy and relieved, although I am sad the team didn t make it, said Christian. The girls cross country team start off their district meet. Junior Allie Sibole led the girl s cross country team to their second league title in three years on Oct. 23. Sibole took 2 nd place individually. Other top finishers include: Heidi Gori who took fifth place, Moira Cary ninth, Claire Koester tenth and Alyssa Bowden eighteenth. This will be the team s fourth consecutive appearance at State, and the girl s first team title since 2006. New teacher and Head Coach Chase Wells joined long-time assistant coach Pat Wagner to continue the team s past success. The girls took first place overall, beating last year s second place finish. The team also finished 3 rd in the 4A rankings for the Dairy Farmers of Oregon award with a 3.92 average GPA. The boys took fourth place overall, while senior Jared Christian placed first. They will compete at the State meet on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Lane Community College. Time: 9:25 A.M. Place: Main Gym. November is the traditional month of remembering and praying for our deceased loved ones. We will have a "Book of Remembrances" in the Chapel in which students, staff and you are invited to write the names of their own beloved dead. These people will be remembered in a special way at our weekday Masses during the month. Christian Service News At this time all juniors and seniors should have begun their Service. Nov. 4 is the deadline for the first 10 hours and corresponding Journal entries. Seniors should have 15 hours and the corresponding Journal entries completed by Dec. 1. They will receive credit in theology class for meeting this deadline. Please check the Christian Service bulletin board outside the cafeteria and listen to announcements for additional Christian Service opportunities especially as we approach the holiday season. Students should also meet with Mrs. Julie Ferrari for additional information. Terrie Clemens, Campus Ministry Assistant Parents of Seniors On Wednesday, Nov. 5 after the school Mass, Miners Graduate Services will be here to hand out graduation packets to seniors. Please ask your senior to share these with you as this is the information you need to order graduation gowns and announcements. June seems like a long way off, but the process for graduation continues throughout the year. You will be updated by Chris Deffenbacher, Marist Registrar and Graduation Coordinator, as these events and deadlines occur. Marist Volunteer Program ("MVP") Thank you so much for your support of the Coat Drive which was completed in early October. The Marist community contributed about 160 coats, many of which were brand new, to support those in our area who will be without warm clothing. Good work! The next school-wide outreach effort will be our annual Dollar Drive which will take place from Nov. 17 to 21. This event supports the good work of the Eugene Mission and, specifically, the huge Thanksgiving dinner which it hosts for hundreds of the homeless in our community. FACT SHEET to RESPONSE A Comprehensive High School-Based Suicide Awareness Program Marist High School RESPONSE Program Youth Suicide in Oregon Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Oregonians aged 10 to 24. Oregon s youth suicide rate is 8.5 per 100,000 youth. In 2006, an estimated 1400 youth ages 10-17 were treated at hospital emergency departments for attempting suicide. What Our School Needs to Know Suicide is rarely an impulsive act brought on during a moment of despair. Most youth signal or even talk openly of their intent before making a suicide attempt. Unfortunately, these warning signals often go unnoticed. Talk of suicide is discounted by friends and family who don t want to believe someone they love could be thinking of taking their own life. By knowing the facts about suicide and by learning what to look for, say and do for a potentially suicidal youth, you can literally save a life. RESPONSE teaches staff, parents and students to recognize the warning signs and get help for a suicidal youth. RESPONSE works with participating schools to: Train every member of the staff. We don t know who a troubled child will turn to for help, so it is vital that every member of the staff janitors, coaches, secretaries, administrators and teachers receive the training. Educate parents. Parent workshops equip parents to better help their child. They also develop understanding and support among parents for the school s suicide prevention efforts. Educate students. Because they are the first to know of a friend s intentions, students must take suicide seriously and know that some secrets are too big to keep. Bringing RESPONSE to Our School RESPONSE is a project of Looking Glass Youth & Family Services and is based on proven youth suicide prevention strategies. In its first year of full implementation, the RESPONSE program is rooted in the success of our former SAFE:TEEN program. Staff In-service In 2003, Marist held the Staff training portion of SAFE:TEEN. There will be a refresher provided this year and a full RESPONSE inservice training in 2008-9. In the workshop, staff members learned basic information about suicide and suicide prevention and are now more familiar with how to recognize a student at risk, and how to talk with and refer a suicidal teen. Parent Workshop In 2003, Marist held its first Parent Workshops. This year, we continue this important offering. Parent-Teacher Conferences Nov. 25 & 26 Since we are now using Power School to enable you to view your student s grades and are not sending home 1 st Quarter report cards by mail, you will want to take advantage of the upcoming Parent- Teacher Conferences. The request form for these conferences is available online now at Marisths.org. Look for the "Breaking News" logo on our home page. You can fill it out online and submit it to me electronically, or print it and send it to the Main Office with your student. The rest of the process is the same: the conferences will be scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will be scheduled to see 3 teachers for 10-minute conferences each. The 2008 Homecoming Queen and King were crowned by our very own 2007 Homecoming King Aaron Sinclair. The Queen was Kayla Braud and the King Jordan Schrader During Homecoming Week, class competitions and dress-up days ended with the grand finale of the class dance. This was the best class dance competition Marist has seen in a long time. The senior class joined in the Hokey Pokey for the freshmen class dance. It was exciting to see the entire student body standing and participating with the freshmen. The point totals for the week were: Fourth place, the freshmen with 20 points; Third place, the sophomores with 33 points; Second place, the seniors with 36 points; The winner of the 2008 Homecoming Week was the Class of 2010 with 37 points. The following families donated vehicles to use during the half-time presentation of the court: Mike and Teri Dibos, Michael and Joann Jamieson, Jay and Sharee Waldron and Mike and Sue Colasurdo. A special thank you to Kiefer of Eugene which donated the use of two cars for the celebration. The junior and senior classes would also like to thank all the parents and staff who helped chaperone the homecoming dance Friday night to help make it a fun and safe evening. Nov. 12 during the activity period, the student body will celebrate Marist's 40 th birthday. Students will have the opportunity to participate in intramural activities as well as discovery session groups such as knitting, Pétanque and ballroom dancing. The general community celebration is Nov. 18. Juniors interested in helping with the 2009 Prom please check in with Mrs. Pimental. Prom meetings will start happening in December. The Hugh O Brien Youth Leadership Seminar is available to current sophomores who demonstrate leadership skills. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Students are required to write a 100- word essay. The cost of the seminar is $150.00. See Mrs. "P" or Mr. Ragan for more details. The essay deadline is Nov. 28.
