WHAT KIND OF COURSE CAN I TAKE? At East Riding College, you can work towards a number of different types of higher education qualification. Some are part-time courses, some are full-time and some can be either. The qualifications outlined in this course guide fall into the types of qualification below. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION This is a level three course to prepare people to take the step up to higher education. This will be of particular interest to adults who are returning to education after a break and who may not currently meet the academic entry criteria for higher education programmes. HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS These are work-related higher education courses which have more of a practical emphasis. The certificate is at level four and roughly the equivalent to the first year of a degree and the diploma is at level five and similar to the first two years of a degree. FOUNDATION DEGREES These are similar to degrees but involve more practical work and work experience. Foundation degree students often study subjects closely related to their current job, or one that they want to progress to. TOP-UP DEGREES As the name suggests, this course allows you to top up your foundation degree or higher national diploma to a full degree. They are the equivalent to the last year of a degree. DEGREES The best-known and most common higher education qualification. Honours degrees include the awarding of classifications of honours such as first, upper and lower second and third class. MASTERS A Masters degree is the most common post-graduate qualification which you can take after you have completed an honours degree or equivalent. It shows a high level of expertise in the studied field, and usually involves writing a thesis. TEACHER TRAINING These popular courses provide higher education qualification routes which will enable you to apply for QTLS (qualified teacher learning and skills) status. We run courses for people who are already teaching and those who are not, and for people with and without degrees. We work like a teacher training college and excel in turning industry specialists into teachers. Unlike other providers, we can arrange work placements and provide mentor support. 4

FURTHER EDUCATION AT LEVEL FOUR AND ABOVE Some courses in this guide are higher level (level four and above), but are not funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and are therefore categorised as further education. These include very specialised professional qualifications like AAT courses. WHO DO WE WORK WITH? Higher education at East Riding College is built on partnerships with respected awarding organisations including the University of Hull, the University of Huddersfield and Pearson - so you can be assured your course meets the highest standards and your degree is awarded by a leading institution. The awarding organisation for each course is indicated by the relevant symbol next the the course title. D F Q HOW TO APPLY Application methods vary according to the course you are taking. When you ve decided on a course, find it at www.eastridingcollege.ac.uk and apply online. You may be directed to a UCAS website to complete your application. FAQ CAN I STUDY AROUND MY JOB? Yes you can. Some of our courses are designed for people to do alongside work and working may be an advantage. It may be worth discussing your choice of course with your employer, if it s work related. Many of our learners have their course fees paid or are supported by their employer. CAN I STUDY IF I RECEIVE BENEFITS? Possibly, on some courses. Please phone and ask to speak with a guidance officer for detailed advice before enrolling. WHAT ABOUT LEARNING SUPPORT? Higher education students can access support for specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, sensory impairment, dyspraxia and physical difficulties. This is funded through the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). This support is free for those who are eligible and could help students with things like study skills, proof reading, extended loans for library books, specific computer software or mobility support. For further information please ask to speak to a guidance officer or disability adviser or visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for detailed information. All higher education students can use our Success Centres, for learning support such as research skills, assignment planning and proof reading. WHAT IF I HAVE ADDITIONAL NEEDS? We welcome students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties and medical conditions. Students with additional needs are considered for courses according to the same academic criteria as other candidates. 7

OUR CAMPUS FACILITIES Between our Beverley and Bridlington campuses, and our fully refurbished Hull site, we believe we are now one of the best equipped colleges in the country. Our fantastic new campus in Beverley is set within the buzzing Flemingate shopping and leisure complex, filled with shops, cafés, bars and a cinema. Plus, we re only a stone s throw from Beverley s famous Minster and the bustling town centre, with its wide selection of bars, cafés and restaurants. A town famous for its festivals, Beverley boasts a thriving cultural scene to complement city life in nearby Hull. The College itself is packed with the latest in teaching and learning technology to ensure you get the most out of your course and have an excellent experience. Our specialist Music Academy is based at our Hull site, right at the centre of a city with a thriving music scene following its reign as City of Culture 2017. We have rehearsal space, a professional recording studio and green screen facilities as well as access to all the music production and performance equipment you might need. 8

Our leafy Bridlington campus is a modern, purpose-built development on the outskirts of Bridlington old town and just ten minutes walk from the fun and frolics of the town s award-winning beaches. We have continued to invest in the Bridlington campus since it was built in 2009, with the latest IT equipment, mechatronics labs and a floodlit, multi-use sports facility within the grounds as well as a teaching gym. CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS Our Beverley and Bridlington campuses have refectories which serve a range of healthy and tasty food at reasonable prices. They re relaxed and informal places where you can get your lunch and hang out with friends. LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRES Our Learning Resource Centres are home to a wide range of reference materials and course texts as well as DVDs and interactive CD-ROMs to support your studies. They also have lots of computers available and printing/photocopying services to support learners at the College. Even if you aren t in College you can access the extensive range of e-books in our online library 24-7-365 via the College virtual learning environment. Our LRCs are modern flexible learning environments, and have different learning zones, with bookable rooms for group work and (at Beverley) a dedicated quiet zone for HE students. 9

THE EAST RIDING COLLEGE EXPERIENCE Our lecturers are friendly and knowledgeable and they re dedicated to giving you the best possible higher education experience. They re also usually industry experts, who ve been there and done it, so you can learn from the best and beat the rest! Rather than sitting in large lecture theatres, your sessions will mostly take place in a classroom with a limited number of others on your course, giving you excellent access to your lecturer and allowing them to dedicate more of their time to you. You still get to work with course mates and learn from others in the class, so it s the best of both worlds. A lot of our courses are designed to give people the opportunity to work alongside their study, and provide modes of study to fit around busy lives and families. Our students especially like the flexibility and support they receive. The learning resources centres have hundreds of resources just a click away, available 24-7 and accessible remotely. The learning resources staff are available to help you find what you need. 10

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION The aim of an access course is to enable mature learners to gain entry to higher education. Our Access to Higher Education Diploma course is an entry qualification to a range of undergraduate programmes and degrees at local and national universities. The course has several pathways you can take, depending on the subject you plan to study at degree level, or the area of interest that you have in terms of your career. Each pathway prepares you for universitylevel study, covering key skills such as academic writing, research skills and referencing as well as exploring relevant units to the subject area. The course is fast paced and will normally be timetabled for approximately 15 hours per week, for the full academic year. Access students acquire the skills - and the confidence - to move successfully onto higher level study. Wendy Smith Class of 2017 Access to Health Science Wendy won student of the year and her tutors commended her on her evaluation of ideas, research skills and ability to make complex links in theory. I ve discovered my passion for psychology. I originally wanted to go into biomedical science but fell in love with psychology after the very first lesson. I was hooked - it was a light bulb moment. I would recommend returning to study to anyone. 14

Matt Wildbore Class of 2014 Graduated with a 2:1 (Hons) in BA Contemporary Media Design & Production I now run my own company Mattix Design. CONSTRUCTION Higher National qualifications are highly regarded in the construction industry and are for those who wish to develop their career beyond hands-on practical work and move into management or technician roles. Useful across the built environment and construction sector, these courses develop the higher level design and management skills needed for roles in architectural technology, quantity surveying, estimating, building surveying and construction management. An ever-growing industry in need of skilled technicians and managers, construction offers lucrative and rewarding careers to those who can meet this demand. FREE LAPTOP OR TABLET! Stephanie Baines Class of 2017 HNC in Construction and the Built Environment I work full time for a local authority and inspect rented properties where tenants have reported disrepair and where landlords refuse to carry out repairs. The course has developed my knowledge as to how buildings are constructed, both residential and commercial, and to determine underlying causes of disrepair. I would recommend East Riding College, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the tutorials were interesting. If I can do it, anyone can. If you re thinking about taking a course, just do it. Do it for yourself. No-one else will do it for you! 20

60% of projected skills shortages in construction are expected to be in managerial and technical positions. 59% of workers in construction recognise that they need more advanced qualifications to progress in their career. 98% of managers in construction are satisfied with their job in the industry. EARLY YEARS AND CARE Our degree courses are designed to support the development of childcare practitioners who wish to progress to a higher level of learning and understanding. There is increasing demand in early years settings for those with specialist knowledge in areas such as child development, special educational needs and well-being and resilience. Our courses are designed to provide that deeper understanding and give students access to career development opportunities, such as progression to teacher status or senior roles within childcare settings. Samantha Dicken Class of 2016 Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Policy and Practice I chose East Riding College as it had a more personal approach, with smaller class sizes, allowing the tutors more time to lend support. The support I received from the tutors was fantastic and a great help as I juggled a family, job and study! I wouldn t have coped without the huge support I received and I believe I wouldn t have got this at a bigger college or university. I am so glad I decided to further my skills, as it will enable me to have the opportunity to progress my career. 22

ENGINEERING The level of demand for qualified engineers is staggering. Our engineering courses are designed to meet this growing demand in industry for engineers qualified to level four in particular. The courses provide higherlevel technical skills and focus on providing students with the opportunity to develop a modern skill set relevant to today s industry. The HNC focuses on design, manufacture and maintenance, as well as developing broader communication and employability skills that will allow you to progress in your career, to technical or management roles. Mark Shackley Class of 2017 BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering I m now working for Plaxton PLC as a Mechanical Design Engineer whilst still studying for a HND. The HNC gave me a wider view of the engineering industry, whereas previously my knowledge was restricted to the work I do. It has also allowed me to gain a greater knowledge of the science behind engineering. I would recommend the College for the location, the top quality equipment and the interesting course units. Eventually I might move onto degree level mechanical engineering and into the car industry with the aim of working as an engineering manager. 24

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE The Health and Social Care sector encompasses many of the caring professions and offers a wide range of stimulating and rewarding roles. Those wishing to train in health or care often gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the wider sector before specialising in a job role or work with a specific group. Our HNC is designed to give students the underpinning knowledge and the understanding of core values that are required to move to the next level of specialism. Our Level Four Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is a professional qualification for those who wish to be recognised and practice as a professional counsellor. They take time to listen and explain things, they express the confidence they have in us, which empowers us to find that confidence in ourselves and thrive. Their experience and qualifications gives me confidence that I am being taught by the very best. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The UK s digital ecosystem is thriving and plays an integral part in business and industry in the digital age. Technology moves fast and coding skills are still one of the most important job skills for the future. Our computing degree is designed to prepare students for both employment in the IT sector and further study. Unlike purely academic studies, our foundation degree gives you employability skills and includes a work placement in both years of the course. It covers key skills for today s industry such as user interface design and comparative programming paradigms. Philip Murthwaite Class of 2016 Foundation Degree in Computing I was working as an IT Lab Technician at East Riding College when I decided to study the Foundation Degree in Computing to develop my skills. I chose the College because of its location and because I was already familiar with the organisation and the tutors, having worked in the IT Lab! I already knew Phil Earls the course tutor and was delighted to study with him as my tutor. He was very supportive. It was great to learn from other learners in the class too - and the facilities are excellent. I now work as an onsite IT Technician at a university." 28

There is a shortage of talent in the IT world, over 1.46m people are employed in digital companies in the UK and job growth in tech is predicted to outstrip every other sector by 2020. HULL is one of the TOP 20 clusters of digital growth in the UK, with identified specialisms in software development and games development. MANAGEMENT Higher level management courses allow you to progress in your career, prepare you for operational and strategic management roles and give you a broad overview of business. Prepare yourself for future leadership roles and develop the transferable skills organisations want to stay successful, whether in the corporate world or public/third sector. Most management degrees have a practical approach, and ours are no exception. Our foundation degrees were developed with the help of employers to make sure that graduates leave us with skills that make them extremely employable. Our Foundation Degree in Public Service Management is designed for those wishing to move into management roles or graduate programmes within the public sector. Our Foundation Degree in Leisure Management is designed for those who want to work within the sector - including public and private sector initiatives - who want to move into management roles within the leisure industry including leisure, resort and venue management. Tracy Westgarth Class of 2017 ILM Level Five NVQ Diploma in Management and Leadership The prospect of the extra study was daunting at first. I was concerned about being able to complete the course on top of my full time job as Regional Manager with Parkinson s UK. Once I met my tutor my fears were allayed, the evidence required all related to my role and experience. I used my 1-2-1 sessions to set targets and completed the course ahead of the allowed time. Since then I haven t looked back, I am now Area Development Manager. The course gave me the tools to analyse my work practise and was really helpful when our charity was going through a period of strategic change. The new found skills I had learnt helped me lead my team through that. The ILM Level 5 will stand me in good stead for my future career. It is a recognised qualification that affirms all of your experience. I saw it as an investment in my future. 30

SOCIAL SCIENCE Social Science is the scientific study of human interaction, society, culture and change. Scientific disciplines such as psychology, sociology and criminology are used to examine social identity, social control, globalisation and crime prevention. Social scientists go on to work in areas such as social and community services, human resources, education and the police, and help make the world safer and healthier. The work of social scientists influences our everyday lives and the future of our society, from crime to public health, education or economics. Bernie Hilton 2nd Year Student BA (Hons) Social Science The degree course has been really good so far, I love that we can study at Bridlington, rather than have to travel. The College has been fabulous, I couldn t imagine studying anywhere else. Having the route all the way from level two through to access and degree level is excellent. I ve had all the help I could have wished for, I ve felt very supported. It has changed my life and I would recommend it to mature students in particular. 34

Our degree programme gives you a good grounding in a wide spectrum of disciplines within sport, covering anatomy, psychology, coaching and injury treatment as well as sports massage and nutrition. Successful students have progressed to a range of further study and careers. Callum Ewing and Alex Davies Class of 2017 BSc Sports Coaching and Health Sciences Both Callum and Alex received first class honours in their BSc Sports, Coaching and Health Sciences degrees. Alex Davies I m pleased with my result after all the hard work. I took up the foundation degree initially, to improve my career prospects, but I feel like I ve learned so much more along the way. Callum Ewing I d recommend the route we took to anyone who thinks they may have left it too late to do a degree. We managed to work, study and get the best result possible. I don t know whether I could have done that at 18! 36

Sean O Callaghan Class of 2017 Pre-Service Professional Graduate Certificate in Education East Riding College was very welcoming. My tutors made me feel wanted and at ease. They understood that I was away from home and didn t know much about the area and they helped me get a placement. The course has improved my teaching practice and built my confidence as a teacher. I would recommend the College to anyone considering a PGCE, as there is always help at hand. I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. 38
