Introduction Learning by Video Conference (VC) is very different to learning in a classroom. It requires a student to develop skills and maturity quickly. There is a lot you can do to help. VC learning is a partnership between a lot of people and systems. We all have an important role to play. VC Mentor Peer support Student Parent Moodle VC Teacher Course Structure The learning is flipped which is a tried, tested and successful method of teaching and learning. Students use a range of resources to learn BEFORE the lesson and come to a lesson prepared to be assessed on knowledge and to discuss, apply and evaluate. This will take time outside of lessons. On average an A- level takes 10 hours per week. FLN students, taught from Warwick, have two VC sessions per week- the rest of the time is allocated to Self-Directed Learning (SDL); self-study using specific online resources. It is important that they know each section of learning really well as the course moves on. The work is all put on Moodle, our learning platform. This includes videos, reading, exercises, online discussions, stretch, challenge and support. FLN teachers, at Warwick, also offer one-to-one support sessions bookable via Moodle. Please help your child understand the work load, the stretch and challenge, the importance of time management and of completing work prior to the VC sessions. Skills for Learning Students need to be very self-directed. They need to develop all their OneSchool Skills including timekeeping, time management, planning ahead, teamwork and more. To be successful they will need to manage their own learning and take ownership of it. Please help by checking in on the time they are spending and supporting learning at home. Communication Each week progress is considered and campuses know weekly of any concerns, commendations or citations. Parent consultation: In the first instance, please speak to the campus VC Learning Mentor. If further communication is needed parents can ask to speak to the VC teacher on the telephone during the parent consultation weeks. FLN Warwick have a booking system parents can use but due to the numbers involved (over 250) this needs to be after having first seen the mentor on Campus. FLN Warwick collect weekly Good Feel Indicators online from students. VC teachers provide additional support if needed by contacting the student and campus. Parents can gently nudge with reminders and ask questions about how well the course is going. Do speak to the VC Learning Mentor if you have concerns. Learning Environment at home Students need to be able to access Moodle from home and have a quiet place to study. Support What else can you do to help? Encourage your child to communicate, appropriately, with their VC Learning Mentor and VC teacher. Ensure that the email protocol is being followed by your child. Look at the LMS (Moodle) with them: see what they are learning; even learn with them. Ask questions, show an interest and encourage them to think how what they are learning is useful to their future and to their grades. If you have any questions please ask at the campus, speak to the VC Learning Mentor, Headteacher or Regional Principal. Where is everything? 1. Log onto Moodle 2. Go to Courses 2016-17 3.
