STATUTE ENG31 DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE (HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING) 1. For admission as a candidate for the degree of Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering), a person must: be a graduate of this University or such graduate of another university as the Academic Board may approve, and have obtained a bachelor s degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Sciences, or a bachelor s degree in human factors related disciplines, or such qualifications and experience as the Academic Board may approve, and have a period of relevant working experience after obtaining his first degree or such other qualifications approved by the Academic Board under the provisions of sub-paragraphs and of this clause. Candidates without working experience but with excellent academic qualifications may also be considered for admission. 2. A person will normally be admitted as a candidate only at the beginning of a semester. 3. A person will be admitted to the programme either as - a full time candidate, for whom the minimum and maximum periods of candidature are one and two years respectively; or a part-time candidate, for whom the minimum and maximum periods of candidature are two and four years respectively. 4. In addition to clause (3) above, a person will also be admitted to the programme either as - a candidate for the single degree Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering); or a candidate for the dual degree programme in Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Master of Science, Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, Linköpings Universitet (LiU), Sweden. 5. A candidate will, depending on the courses of study pursued in LiU, be awarded with an additional degree of Master of Science by LiU in either Master of Science (Human Factors in Aviation), or Master of Science (Industrial Ergonomics). 1
6. During the period of study a candidate must pursue such courses of study as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the advice of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. 7. For successful completion of the programme of study, candidates must obtain a total number of 30 academic units. 8. A candidate of the corresponding dual degree programme in LiU will be awarded the degree of Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) by NTU on completion of the programme of study as prescribed by Regulations. 9. The candidate must take a written examination on such subjects as may be prescribed by Regulations. The results of the written examination will be submitted to the Board of Graduate Studies. REGULATIONS MADE UNDER STATUTE ENG31 Subjects of Study 1. The course leading to the degree of Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) shall comprise: (1) four core subjects, four elective subjects and a project on which the candidate must submit a dissertation; or (2) four core subjects, five elective subjects and a compulsory Term Paper. In the event that the candidate has passed the subjects(s) previously during the course of his undergraduate studies, the candidate may, with the approval of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, opt for alternative subject/ alternative subjects in lieu of the said subject(s). Each subject will be assigned a certain number of academic units as may be determined by the Board of Graduate Studies. 2. (1) The subjects of study shall be determined by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with the approval of the Board of Graduate Studies. (2) Each of the core and elective subjects and the Term Paper shall be of duration not exceeding one semester. The Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU shall determine which subjects and at what period they will be offered in any one-year. (3) The project and the dissertation - 2
If the candidate selects the first option as stated in Regulation 1(1), he must undertake a project on a topic approved by the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and submit a dissertation based on the project. The dissertation shall not exceed 15,000 words and shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions prescribed in clause 10 of Statute 18 (Degrees of Master). (4) The Term Paper If the candidate selects the second option as stated in Regulation 1(2), he must undertake an independent research on a topic of study approved by the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and submit a Term Paper based on the topic of study. The Term Paper shall not exceed 8,000 words and shall be submitted in the form of a written report. NTU Candidates Admitted to Dual Degree Programme 3. A candidate admitted to the dual degree programme must pursue a semester of full-time study at the Linköpings Universitet (LiU). The candidate needs to complete four subjects at NTU, of which two are core subjects of the Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) programme before undertaking LiU studies. The candidate shall proceed to undertake the full-time study in LiU with the approval of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The candidate shall pursue four subjects in LiU. The subjects must be approved by both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human- Machine Interaction, LiU. 4. A candidate admitted to the dual degree programme can pursue the approved subjects in LiU, in lieu of the four subjects to be taken in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The candidate must undertake a human factors engineering project on a topic approved by the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU, and be jointly supervised by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Graduate School of Human- Machine Interaction, LiU. The primary supervisor shall be appointed by the Board of Graduate Studies on the advice of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The candidate will submit a dissertation to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU based on the project undertaken according to sub-clause of this regulation. 3
LiU Candidates Admitted to Dual Degree Programme 5. A candidate of the corresponding dual degree programme in LiU must pursue a semester of full time study at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. (d) The candidate shall pursue four subjects at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The subjects must be approved by both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU. The candidate must undertake a human factors engineering project on a topic approved by both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human- Machine Interaction, LiU. The candidate will submit a dissertation to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU based on the project. The dissertation shall not exceed 15,000 words and shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions prescribed in clause 10 of Statute 18 (Degrees of Master). Examinations 6. The written examination will normally be held on completion of the subject of study. 7. A candidate will be dismissed from the programme if, within one academic year (for full-time candidates) or two academic years (for part-time candidates) of his candidature, he has not obtained at least half of the total number of academic units required for the coursework component of the programme. The total number of academic units excludes any transfer of credits and subject exemptions. A candidate who wishes to re-take the examination in any failed subject is required to repeat the course of study in that particular subject before sitting for the examination. 8. A candidate who is prevented by illness from taking or completing the Examination may be permitted by the Board of Graduate Studies to take the Examination again at a subsequent period of the Examination provided that the illness is reported to the Dean, Graduate Studies and a medical report submitted to the Dean, Graduate Studies within forty-eight hours of the candidate s absence from the examination. In such a case, the candidate may be required, at the discretion of the Board of Graduate Studies, to repeat the course before sitting the Examination again. Any fee payable for the medical examination under regulation 8 of these Regulations shall be paid by the candidate. 9. A candidate admitted to the dual degree must complete the period of study in LiU and obtain such results to the satisfaction of both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the 4
Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU. Credits earned from these subjects may be transferred to the equivalent academic units for the Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) programme, with the approval of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. A candidate who fails to complete the period of study at LiU and has obtained results not to the satisfaction of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU will be deemed to have failed and be refused re-admission to the dual degree programme. A candidate who has failed under sub-paragraph of this clause may be readmitted to the single degree Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) programme, with the approval of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. 10. A candidate of the corresponding dual degree programme in LiU must complete the period of study in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The candidate must obtain such results to the satisfaction of both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU. Credits earned from the subjects completed in LiU may be transferred to the equivalent academic units for the Master of Science (Human Factors Engineering) programme, with the approval of the Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. 11. (1) The project dissertation may be submitted at any time after the candidate has passed the written examination in all the core subjects prescribed by these Regulations. (2) The Term Paper must be submitted on the stipulated date, which will be on the Examination week of the semester that it was registered for. A candidate who failed the requirements of the Term Paper will have to re-take the subject in the following semester. 12. The dissertation for a candidate admitted to dual degree programme will be jointly examined by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU. An examiner will be appointed by the Board of Graduate Studies on the advice of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU. The Director of the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU will appoint the other examiner. 13. A candidate admitted to the dual degree programme will be deemed to have completed the programme upon: completing all the courses of study and submitted the dissertation to the satisfaction and approval of both the Dean of the School of Mechanical and 5
Aerospace Engineering, NTU and the Director of the Graduate School of Human-Machine Interaction, LiU; and satisfying all the requirements prescribed by Regulations made by the Board of Graduate Studies on the advice of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU; and the corresponding regulations in LiU. Exemptions 14. The Academic Board may grant such exemptions as it thinks fit from the requirements of these Regulations. End of Statute ENG31 6
