Prof. K.K.ANAND s SMART MINDS ACADEMY Alternate School Nurturing Gifted & Talented Children For Holistic Academic Excellence (I) ABOUT SMART MINDS ACADEMY Smart Minds Academy, a brain child of Chennai s No.1 JEE (IIT/NIT) trainer Prof. K.K.Anand, is an Alternate School (Standards I XII) that nurtures Gifted & Talented children to achieve Holistic Academic Excellence. Gifted children are those with higher level of ability to learn and hence Higher Potential to Perform well. Talented children are the High Achievers in at least the regular school curriculum Maths and Science in our context. Smart Minds is the nurtured minds of the Gifted & Talented children, who apart from attaining Academic Excellence in the Core Areas are also Physically and Emotionally Balanced, Guided by Ethics and Morality, Deriving Strength from Cultural and Spiritual Heritage, Possessing Social and Environmental Awareness, Patriotic, Responsible Citizens with Adherence to Universal Values, willing to Integrate into Family / Team in Work-Place / Society to Achieve Common Goals, and Visionary Leaders in workplace or elsewhere at appropriate circumstances. Attainment of such Smart Mind paves the way to Holistic Academic Excellence - the motto of the Academy. This conceptualization is the first of its kind in India, in terms of the Education Methodology and the Curriculum Design as envisaged by Prof.K.K.Anand. Any National /State / School Educational framework has been designed keeping in mind the potential of an average learner and rightly so, since it has to cater to the needs of one and all. But to harness the potential and to enhance the learning of Gifted & Talented children, as well as that of the above average performing children, differentiated learning programs that are add-on programs augmenting substantially the regular learning are prevalent. In this regard, Prof.K.K.Anand s SMART (Science and Maths Academy for Real Talents), Chennai (www.smartedu.co.in ) instituted in 2004, has already made considerable contribution to the academic growth and achievements of numerous students, through its various courses for students from Standards I to XII, through the after School Hour Classroom Program & Integrated School tie-up Programs, and it will continue to do so. Hundreds of students of SMART have been to Prestigious Universities like the IITs, BITSs, NITs in India.

Infact, students of SMART have further moved onto even the Top Universities of the World like MIT (5 students by 2015-16), Stanford (5 Students by 2014-15), Harvard, UC Berkeley, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, John Hopkins, NUS, NTU etc. But with ever mounting National and Global challenges, formulating a new curriculum keeping in mind the learning potential of the Gifted & Talented children, and also devising the appropriate Educational Methodology to deliver it,is the need of the hour. This alone will do complete justice to the immense potential of the Gifted & Talented children. Such students can be, and have to be equipped with much more Knowledge and Skills, than what is normally imparted to attain even greater competence, so that they face the challenges with confidence, & perform even much better especially in Olympiads & Competitive Exams, and are also equipped to excel further in the University Studies & Research. Hence, a fully differentiated program with complete focus only on the Gifted & Talented children, for their wholesome educational requirements is a necessity. This is precisely the role of Smart Minds Academy which is rising the bars set by even SMART. The Academy with its Unique Curriculum and well Trained Expert Faculty team, will be a dream destination for those with good enough aptitude aspiring to excel in competitive exams like JEE Advanced (IIT), AIPMT (Medical Entrance) etc. The Academy will also train the students to prepare well for the Olympiads of the choice of the students, in Maths, Science, Informatics & Linguistics. For those interested in pursuing Under- Graduate studies abroad, Training will be provided by the Academy to excel in SAT- I, SAT- II & Advanced Placement Exams. Nevertheless, the Academy s methodology will not merely be to produce students cracking competitive exams like JEE Advanced somehow, by concentrating only upon Maths, Physics & Chemistry, that too purely by exam oriented approach. The Academy will strive to make the students experience the joy of learning, while imparting the necessary Professional and Social skills & attain Holistic Academic Excellence. The curriculum ensures that the students are not only very analytical with good problem solving skills, excelling in Competitive Exams, but also are creative enough to become Innovators. The Curriculum is Very Comprehensive, encompassing diverse Subjects & Topics, which are all taught under one roof. Hence, it will also be convenient for the Parents & Students alike.

II. WHY SMART MINDS ACADEMY? Exclusive for the Gifted & Talented Additional Subjects Exceptional Faculty Expertise Comprehensive Study Materials Thorough Enrichment of Knowledge & Skills Competitive Peer Group Excellent Ambience & Amenities Rigorous Quality Assessments Estimation of All India Rank Achievement Potential Inspiring Education & Ecosystem Outstanding Achievements by the students Innovative & Extraordinary Curriculum Extra Hours New Age Learning Methodologies Well Researched Books Individual Attention & Special Guidance Promotion of Team Work & Synergy Learning with Pleasure Substantial Feedback with Analytics Commitment to Character Building & Value System All under one Roof III. CURRICULUM DESIGN PRINCIPLES There are many aspects & subjects that will be same in the Academy as in any other good CBSE / ICSE school. But the primary guiding principles for the curriculum design, eventually that differentiates the Academy from others are: Acceleration Enrichment Extension Value Addition (Faster) (Wider) (Deeper) (Newer) This ensures that the students not only acquire substantial competitive edge over their peers, but also acquire Holistic Academic Excellence. The curriculum based on these design Principles imparts the following skills closely related to the core Academics: HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) Metacognition (Awareness of different Thinking tools, Choices of Thinking tool, Reflection on the Thinking tools used) Generic Study Skills & Independent Learning Skills Investigation and Research Skills Practical and Technical Skills Team Work Skills Communication Skills (Verbal and Written)

Higher Order Thinking Skills Higher Order Thinking Skills can be considered to comprise the following: Critical Thinking Creative Thinking Problem Solving Skills Visualization and Imagination Skills Skills to Interlink Various Concepts Application Skills 1. ACCELERATION Acceleration is the coverage of Concepts or Chapters earlier than what otherwise would be done as per the regular school curriculum (CBSE/ICSE). While ICSE curriculum is slightly accelerated than that of CBSE, the curriculum of the Smart Minds Academy, will be the accelerated version of that of ICSE, especially in Maths, Science and Computer Science, since it is designed in accordance with the learning capabilities of the Gifted & Talented Children. By the end of Standard VIII, Standard X curriculum of ICSE will get completed in Maths, Science and Computer Science. By the end of Standard X, most parts of CBSE/ICSE curriculum of Standards XI & XII, along with Conceptual and Problem Solving Sessions for many chapters at JEE Main Level, and for some chapters at JEE Advanced Level will be completed. Similarly so in Biology for those opting the Medicine Stream. During Standards XI &XII, intense training will be imparted to excel in JEE Main/Advanced for the Engineering Stream and AIPMT/AIIMS etc, for the Medicine Stream. For those interested in pursuing Under Graduate Studies abroad, Training will be provided by the Academy to excel in SAT I, SAT II & Advanced Placement Exams, during Standards IX, X & XI. 2. ENRICHMENT Enrichment involves widening of the learning experience beyond the scope of the regular school curriculum (CBSE/ICSE) though involving the same syllabus. The curriculum employs various ways to enrich the learning process, some of which are as follows: These enrichments enlisted below will ensure that one's understanding of scientific principles is wholesome and will be very helpful even to become a Research Scientist/ Innovator.

(a) Project Based Learning: In the context of Science, it is not enough to know the theory alone. It is quite important to get accustomed to the Scientific Process of Testing a stated Hypothesis to be either True or False, based on a developed Experimental Procedure involving Observation and Measurement. Infact, there won t be any Scientific Law, but for this process. This is accomplished through Yearly Science Fair Projects. Learning of Maths is also enriched similarly through Yearly Maths Fair Projects. (b) Thought Experiment This new Pedagogy introduced by Prof. K.K.Anand involves verbal formulation of an experiment or practical situation, warranting response from the students regarding its outcome, and the reason for such an outcome, so as to either illustrate a Scientific Principle or its Application. This process is powerful enough to create a huge impact in the understanding of the Scientific Principles. Around 75 thought experiments per standard on an average will be discussed for students from Standard III to Standard X. The current School Curriculum and even the training for Competitive Exams like JEE (IIT/ NIT) does not instill Qualitative understanding of various Scientific Laws / Principles in the minds of the students. Training for JEE (IIT/ NIT) though intense, involves understanding of many concepts & their nuances and rigorous problem solving, which involves considerable Analytical Skills. But, the problems are well- defined, so that, they are tailor made to test the students understanding of the Mathematical Formulations (Formulae) of various concepts and the interlinkages between the concepts to arrive at certain expressions or a numerical answer. So the emphasis of existing systems is highly skewed towards the Quantitative aspect and not much on the Qualitative aspect of Science. Hence, the teaching is based only on the Mathematical Formulation. This system for sure, has created numerous IITians and others with excellent problem solving skills and sound analytical abilities, but unfortunately not many with the capability to Invent/Innovate. Mathematical formulations do not stay long enough in the memory. It requires repeated usage with reasonable frequency. But qualitative understanding stays longer. In fact, introduction and analysis of the scientific principles through its qualitative aspects will stay almost lifelong. Also, it is quite easy to understand for almost all. The Thought Experiments addresses these issues.

An example of T houg ht Exper i ment Consider a horizontally placed cylindrical poly-bag (say 1.5 meters long with 6cm diameter) with only one end closed. Initially, it is shrunk with its surfaces sticking with each other. The task is to blow air from one s mouth through the opening of the bag, so that the bag becomes stiff and reasonably robust horizontal cylindrical bag, but in minimal number of blows. Many will instantly answer that the air blow must be done after taking deep breath and by using the lung capacity at its best to minimize the number of blows. Granted that one does this way, the students need to be informed that there still exists a way to minimize the number of blows. Again many will feel that the mouth has to be as close as possible to the opening of the bag so that there is no air spillage to other areas and hence the optimal method. This is based on normal experience and may be intuitive / obvious for many. But they need to be informed that it is not the optimal solution. At this juncture, some may figure out that optimality can hence forth arise only if even the outside air gets into the bag apart from the air blown from one's mouth. Hence one has to find a way that will maximize the flow of outside air into the bag, since the lung capacity is already used at its best. This may alert the minds of few who shall answer that, it has to do with the creation of pressure difference. Hence, the solution spelt out will be to place the mouth few inches away from the bag s opening and force the air out of the mouth with as much speed as possible, so that this moving air will be at as lower pressure as possible. After all, moving air as having lower pressure than the surrounding static air is a qualitative aspect of the Bernoulli's principle, which is in fact the heart of the principle. The surrounding air being at higher pressure, will get sucked into the lower pressure region of moving air and hence will gush into the cylindrical bag-this being the optimal solution. Efficacy of Thought Experiment The beauty of the solution is that it is counter intuitive for many (to blow leaving space in between the mouth and the bag opening) but intuitive to only those who have the grasp of the qualitative aspect of the scientific principle. This differentiates the Inventor / Innovator from the rest. Those who can think freely on the qualitative aspects of various scientific principles and their interlinkages, for a given open ended situation will have better insights and will come up with the solution faster. The mathematical modeling for the quantitative aspects of the solution shall take place later. For instance the correct position of one's mouth and the minimal number of blows can be identified through appropriate experiments & mathematical formulations.

Those who are accustomed to only the quantitative aspects, dealing always with well-defined problems with respect to existing mathematical formulation will have mental block thinking about open ended problems and 1 2 will be struck in their thought process. So, instead of merely teaching P + 2 ρv + ρgh = C(constant) as Bernoulli's principle and only solving standardized well defined problems, one has to spend enough time in unraveling its Qualitative aspects in multi faceted ways including the discussions on various practical applications, for the thorough understanding of the principle. This methodology will contribute in a significant manner to enrich the thought process of individuals willing to innovate. (c) 3D Animation Videos & Simulations The State of the Art 3D Animation Videos generates excellent visualization of even the abstract concepts, making their understanding simple & clear. The 3D Simulations act as Virtual Labs to explore further and attain comprehensive understanding of the concepts in Science. (d) Experiments & Demonstrations Live Experiments and Demonstrations generate considerable interest among the students and eases out the understanding of various Scientific Principles. Also, unexpected outcome increases the curiosity level of the students in identifying the correct reasoning and overall understanding of various phenomenon. (e) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Activities With huge advancements in Engineering & Technology and their impact in day-to-day life, it has become imperative to introduce them to the Children through a structured curriculum. No more, can they be considered as exclusively meant for college students alone. After all, they are various applications of Science & Maths only. Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration & Communication are integral to every STEM Activity. (i).generic Activities 21 st Century learning involves Integrated understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths through varieties of activities & projects exploring the world further and getting exposed better to modern realities. It may be as simple as a design of Paper Boats to start with for the Lower Primary Level, but the Engineering Design principles will be followed in various such STEM Activities. (ii).robotics This important STEM Activity makes the Children learn to even design and build Robots, Programming them to perform various tasks. Students will be trained to participate in the Robotics Contests as well.

3. EXTENSION Extension involves in-depth understanding of the regular syllabus using Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This is extremely important since it sharpens the intellect and makes the Gifted & Talented children to be very analytical & well versed in Conceptual Nuances & Problem Solving in higher difficulty levels. This also brings out the best in such children, resulting in huge contrast relative to those undergoing normal curriculum. 4. VALUE ADDITION Apart from the regular subjects usually dealt with in schools, subjects like Mental Ability, Recreational Maths and Chess have been included under one consolidated Subject named Puzzles, to provide considerable Value Addition to the overall learning experience. a. Mental Ability Curriculum involves conventional Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning in a detailed graded manner which also takes care of Brain Teasers and Puzzles pertaining to the standardized IQ tests. b. Recreational Maths Curriculum involves interesting Puzzles and Vedic Maths that very much augment the overall learning experience. The Mathematical & Logical Puzzles and other problems involved in the curriculum are not only of the genre that are Fun and Entertaining, but also of the genre that provoke Curiosity & Creative Thinking, and Instructive of wide range of Mathematical Ideas, some of which does not figure even in the regular Maths Syllabus. Vedic Maths adds good flavour through various alternative mathematical calculation procedures to be processed purely by mind, and hence acts as an effective Mind Gym. c.chess Chess, the classic game of strategy invented more than 1500 years ago in India has emerged as an outstanding tool to enhance Multiple Skills including the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), which also brings out the latent abilities in a way not achieved by even conventional educational system. Chess results in higher cognitive function and can be considered as self exploration towards perfection, encountering various discoveries en-route. Chess offers far greater quantities of Puzzles / Problems with variegated difficulty levels for learning & practice, and these can t be solved by a mere mechanical procedure. The process of teaching the various conceptual aspects contributed by the acclaimed thinkers of chess over the decades regarding the Tactics & Strategies of the Middle Game, Opening and the End Game is by itself highly rewarding intellectually. A graded curriculum has been designed to impart chess in a systematic and effective manner.

Various Benefits of Chess Improves Memory, Attention & Concentration considerably. Enhances Critical Thinking, Planning & Decision Making (Foreseeing Consequences, Weighing Options, Formulation of Alternate Solutions) Involves Imagination, Visualization & Abstract Thinking. Enhances Pattern Recognition Skills, Problem Solving Skills & Understanding of Mathematical concepts. Imparts Sportsmanship and Social Skills. Teaches the Values of Hardwork, Patience, Resilience & Commitment. IV.CURRICULUM (a).classification of Study Levels Primary Level : Standards - I, II, III, IV, V Middle Level : Standards - VI, VII & VIII Secondary Level : Standards - IX & X Senior Secondary level : Standards - XI & XII The age criteria followed is same as that of the CBSE guidelines (b).board Exam As an Alternate School, Smart Minds Academy has its own curriculum & is not affiliated to any Board. However, for the purpose of Formal Certification, students will be guided to register and to take up the Board Exams at Standard X & Standard XII levels conducted by NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) Subjects for Standard X Board Exam English Maths Science & Technology ( Physics, Chemistry, Biology) Social Science ( History, Geography, Political Science) Data Entry Operations ( Primarily Word & Excel)

Subjects for Standard XII Board Exam English Maths Physics Chemistry Computer Science / Biology (c). NIOS NIOS is instituted by Government of India & is the only Board in India which does not stipulate formal schooling to take up their Board Exam. For further details, refer www.nios.ac.in. Syllabus prescribed by NIOS closely follows that of CBSE, but the treatment in any chapter is relatively less intense than that of CBSE. NIOS Board is utilized by various categories of students: 1. Students who cannot cope with regular school, opt for NIOS, so that the curriculum is less intense, and can also avail the flexibility offered. For instance, one can take up Painting as a subject, instead of Maths for Standard X NIOS Board Exam, if one is more interested in Arts. 2. Students who are more interested in Sports, Music, Arts etc., willing to devote lot of time towards their area of interest ( to become a Professional) will not be able to attend school on a regular basis. For such people NIOS is the best option. 3. Those who have missed School in the Childhood can prepare afresh & take up NIOS Board Exam and obtain the Certificate. 4. Students who are either Home-Schooled or into Alternate Schools for their own reasons, take up NIOS Board Exam for Certification. 5. Some students who are interested in performing well in Competitive Exams like JEE Advanced/Main and Olympiads find NIOS to be very convenient as they get more preparation time by not attending any School. They attend classes run by Institutes / Private Tutors in their areas of interest to do well in Competitive Exams. Such students have secured admission into the IITs, NITs, BITS and other reputed Deemed Universities in India. For instance, Neha Ashok, a Home Schooler took up NIOS Board Exam and cleared the IIT Entrance Examination and completed her B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering) in the year 2015, at IIT- Madras.

6. Similarly, in 2015, other students of SMART viz., Vishnu Vig, Sakthi Upaash & Bharathwaj Hari secured admission in NIT Trichy, SASTRA & Amrita respectively, taking up NIOS Board Exam for Standard XII. They deschooled from CBSE schools after Standard X since CBSE Curriculum as they thought will be Cumbersome and wanted expert faculty to learn from, and also prepare for Board exams & as much as possible for Competitive Exams in a leisurely manner without stress. They attended the regular CRP Classes of SMART. Also, SMART floated extra classes in the afternoon for them to learn the NIOS Board Syllabus & that of JEE-Main. It worked well for them, ie., they finally got admission into Universities which otherwise they thought, wouldn t have been possible. (d). Salient Features of the Subjects of Study 1.
