Project information Hochschule Wismar has a research project called Solid multi zone heat storage system the goal is to make an heat storage system out of concrete with multiple heat zones that has the ability to store relatively high amounts of heat over a short period of time. Participant: Delegating authority: Client/Project Partner: Karina Ness Helle Supervisor at Høyskolen i Østfold: Supervisor at Hochschule Wismar: Hochschule Wismar Faculty of engineering Prof, Dr. Ing. Mathias Wilichowski Betonwerk Ribnitz E mail: info@betonwerk ribnitz.de Prof. Dr. Ing Ole Kristian Førrisdahl Telephone number: 0047 69104081 E mail: ole.k.forrisdahl@hiof.no Prof. Dr. Ing. Mathias Wilichowski Telephone number: 0049 03841753 7106 E mai l: mathias.wilichowski@hs wismar.de Background The college of Wismar has for several years worked on a large concrete project. It started in 2012, when the aim was to create a heat storage unit that could be used in residential buildings. They worked on this part of the project for three years before they in August 2015 took a step further by trying to develop an industrial version. The first part of the 3 /21

development of the industrial heat storage unit was research to find out what values that are needed to get a product with the desired properties. After this, a concrete composition are supposed to be found that provides the highest possible values of the desired properties. And it is at this stage the research is on at this point. The research group at Hochschule Wismar is working as partners with a concrete company named Betonwerk Ribnitz. The group at the university s responsibility is to develop a suitable composition of the concrete and build several small models. The company will continue to scale this up and test the finished product over a longer period of time. Research project is funded by the German government and has received a budget of 270.000 Euro. Because these funds they will keep researching until approx. August 2018. Project target and Thesis statement The purpose of this assignment it to develop an product that has the desirable properties so it can store high amounts of heat and can transfer the stored heat to different «outputs» in a efficient way. The area of utilization could be to connect it to a reactor with exothermal reactions that needs to be cooled down from time to time. Then it would be possible to store it for later use as for example a heat exchanger, room heating and so on. Instead of losing this potential energy to the surroundings it can also in the theory be connected to all types of components with high temperature that needs to be cooled down. The goal is to achieve a composition that for fills the desirable abilities so the amount of stored heat is high and the delivery of the heat we wants to use gets delivered in an efficient way. To achieve these goals we need a composition with max conductivity as well as heat capacity and exergetic effect. To achieve this multiple samples with different types of aggregates and additives will be prepared. The materials also will mixed in different combinations so it will be possible to find the ones that works well together. 4 /21

All the samples will be tested to see how they behave under the working conditions, if the composition is suitable and as well how the compound enhances the needed properties. Afterword will the test results be used to compare the samples and then a conclusion will be made. Objectives Literature review Preliminary report Samples Tests Webpage Mid term report Description of the project to the expo catalog COMSOL simulation Final report Lab scale model Press release Expo stand Limits To narrow down the task, the focus of this report it to look at thermodynamic properties. The physical properties like tensile and compressive strength, durability, stiffness and so on are not to be prioritized. High values of these are not needed because the product is not supposed to carry weight besides its own, or get exposed to any harsh environment. 5 /21

Solving methodology To receive enough information to develop a conclusion there will be done several different tests to ascertain the important properties for the different compositions. Tests to be performed are: Conductivity(Hot disk TPS 2000), Heat capacity (Hot disk TPS 2000) and Pore volume Test (Hg Porosimeter) And Heat expansion test (Dilatometer). By comparing the results it should be possible to draw a conclusion about which composition that is best suited for this project. A literature study has been started with the following books: Fundamentals of Thermal fluid Sciences. Yunus A. Cengel ( Mc Graw Hill) Betong: Regelverk, teknologi og utførelse.
