SALAMAH COLLEGE A PARENTS GUIDE TO SCHOOL UNIFORM Introduction: At Salamah College our uniform is a sign of our community. It reflects the School Vision Statement and goals. All families sign as part of the confirmation of enrolment a consent form supporting the uniform and grooming requirements of our school. Students wear a uniform: To develop a sense of student unity, pride and loyalty to our school and to its vision. To de-emphasise differences in appearance. To focus on the real purpose of schooling i.e. the development of an individuality of intellect, imagination and personality. To develop students sense of belonging to the school community. To provide an opportunity to build school spirit. To enhance the health and safety of students when involved in school activities. To reinforce the perception of the school as an ordered and safe environment. To increase the personal safety of students and staff by allowing easier recognition of visitors and potential intruders in the school. To make school clothing more affordable for families by eliminating the risk of peer pressure to wear fashionable and expensive clothes. The whole school community has a role to play in encouraging the meeting of the standards set by the wearing of our School Uniform. Inside this issue: Responsibilities: Students: Students are expected to maintain a neat and tidy appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school's uniform policy and clothing guidelines. Parents/Caregivers: Parents/Caregivers should ensure that their children are dressed in accordance with the school uniform policy and clothing guidelines. Parents/Caregivers should notify the School in writing if their child is out of school uniform. School: Positive reinforcement and encouraging responsible behaviour are the preferred approaches to ensuring that our students wear the school uniform. The School will maintain high expectations for the wearing of school uniforms. This will include reminding students about what is expected and discussing uniform matters with them. The School may contact Parents/Caregivers to discuss non adherence to uniform guidelines. All items of the School Uniform are conveniently available for purchase from the School Uniform Shop which is managed by the School Administration Office. Hair and Hairstyles All students at Salamah College are expected to arrive at school with a suitable haircut/hairstyle. For boys, this means a short, blended haircut. Mohawk, rat tail, undercut or step haircuts are unacceptable at Salamah College. Girls are expected to have clean, combed hair at the length of their choosing. We recommend that hair is tied up using hair ties or ribbons in school colours only. Samples of some of the haircuts/hairstyles that are acceptable or unacceptable are pictured on this page. Head Covering - Hijab It is compulsory for all girls in Year 5 and above to wear the Islamic head covering - Hijab. The selected hijab is a two-piece, white, cotton hijab. Students are not permitted to wear a white material scarf kept in place with pins, for safety reasons. We have provided some examples below: Page 6
Shoes School shoes must provide physical protection to the foot in case of liquid spills or falling objects. Heels that are too high and platforms that are too thick, or too inflexible, introduce danger as they present the possibility of ankle injury. In addition, school shoes must not represent a danger to other students. Consequently, the correct school shoes must be chosen which comply with the uniform policy. The shoes pictured below represent a sample of shoes which are acceptable and samples of unacceptable shoes: Accessories All students are required to use a Salamah College school bag. The school bags are available in small (K-2), medium (3-6) and large sizes (High School). The school bags may be purchased from the School Uniform Shop (see page 8 for shop information). Other accessories which may be purchased by parents are: Grey socks for boys White socks/stockings for girls Maroon hair accessories Please note that these items are not available from the School Uniform Shop. SALAMAH COLLEGE A PARENTS GUIDE TO SCHOOL UNIFORM School Hat All students are encouraged to wear hats when outside, to avoid exposure to the sunlight. The School has a No Hat Play in the Shade policy in effect to restrict exposure to sunlight. Students are permitted to wear only the school hat, which is available for purchase from the School Uniform Shop. To avoid accidents or injury to children, only stud style earrings are to be worn to school by GIRLS only. Necklaces, bracelets, rings, anklets or any other type of jewellery/adornment should not be worn to school. Lost Property Jewellery Please ensure that all school items and clothing are clearly labelled with your child s name. This will assist staff in returning the item to your child if it is left behind in any of the school areas. Each year we are left with a large quantity of uniform which has been lost by students, and unfortunately is not labelled. Students are not permitted to bring any valuable items to school and the school will not be held responsible for any lost items.
